I've always just wrapped the parts with surface rust on them in an oil rag and let it sit for a day or 2 reoiling the rag anytime I passed by then with a coarse nylon brush and oil I'd give it a good scrubbing.

range report (uberti .45 lc and herritage arms .22lg/mag) single actions!!!
gunrunner32 replied to a topic in Handguns
I have almost the same 2 weapons, my Uberti is the 5.5" barreled with standard SAA grips and my Heritage doesn't have the magnum cylinder. Both of mine are excellent shooters, I haven't noticed any color variations in the Heritage, I'll have to pull it out for a closer examination (but for the $150 new that I paid for it I wouldn't care). I am looking to get the Uberti 1873 Cattleman with the birds head grip. I have a FIE Little Ranger (.22lr) with the birds head grip and it is by far one of the most comfortable grips on a revolver I've had. I'll have to agree with you when it comes to Uberti's being a little rough out of the box, they could use a little smoothing out. Too bad that the Heritage isn't living up the the expectations you had for it, I guess there can always be a lemon out there. -
I guess I'll have to have some kind of supervision next time I stop by his shop...I'll have to bring a few friends just to make sure.

If you're looking for a military styled boot you should check out a company called OTB. I have a pair of OTBs and they are a great lightweight boot, no goretex or insulation in the ones I have though so they can get a little cold. I've had the Merrell Moabs and they are good but felt more like a gym shoe to me. Two of my favorite boots are La Sportiva FC ECO 4.0 GTX and Salomon Explorer GTX. I put quite a bit of miles on all of my boots and I go through some pretty tough terrain so I wear them out pretty quickly. I personally haven't been impressed my Merrells quality here for the last few years, I see more of their pairs of boots fall apart than I'd like to. Good luck with the boot search, I just went on one for a pair of winter boots...only took me a month of looking and compairing.

What I always do is I put all my ammo that I'm taking to the range with me in my Pelican case (I have one designated for ammo) and that goes in the bed of the truck, all the guns are in cases/bags so they don't draw any attention with the magazines unloaded usually in the target bag away from the guns and the target bag and guns stay in the cab of the truck. I usually keep my gun oil, boresnakes, small tool kit, staple gun w/ extra staples and spray adhesive as well at targets in my target bag. I've always been told though that just so long as the guns are in a seperate box from the ammo and no loaded magazines you are fine, this was coming from some family that are/were Cincinnati cops.

It's never to early to think about the next big ticket item you're going to purchase and in my case all I can do is think about it for the next couple months. I know around tax season my wife WILL be getting a new car, I don't like the Ford Escape she has now and it's only fair since I have gotten the last 2 new vehicles we've had. So with that out of the way I gave my wife a choice, over seas vacation (Ireland or Scotland) or new tile for the kitchen (about 650 sq. ft) she chose the vacation. Now it comes to my choices...I need a gun safe. I don't have one and I know it's bad of me not to with a 3 year old and as many guns as I have. I need something that I can grow into and don't have to worry too much about over filling. I have about 22 or so long guns and about 18 pistols, I would also like to keep the important documentation and my wife's jewlery in it when she's not wearing it. It will be going on the first floor of my house in the guest bedroom and I have a wall that is about 10 ft long to put it on. I want something that has a good fire rating, an hour would be nice. I would also like it to have a digital pad to get into with since I suck as combination locks (subject to change and I know it is an option on most safes). I have about 2k to spend on this and would like some input. I went to The Safe House in Nashville about 5 months ago and looked at a nice 40 gun safe that was a tall model (extra sheld on top) and I believe it was a Browning. I have about 2-3 other people here with me at work that are looking to get one around the same time as I am, I'm not sure of their requirements though, so if anyone knows where we could get a group deal that would be awesome as well. Next set of choices....I want a new Sig, but I also want a good 1911. Price really doesn't matter in this case but I would like to keep it around 1k to keep the peace at home. I've already gotten a P6 and a P226 which my wife has confiscated for herself so I need something for me. The P6 is a '79 West German and the P226 is a '98 German with no import markings. I was thinking of a nice P228, if I can find one, or a P229 just so I know it will also fit my wife's hands and maybe I'll get back my P226. Since the majority of the pistols I shoot are some form of .45, I figured that getting a P220 would only go along with what I normally have at the range anyways. I do like the older Sigs with the larger triggers, not too fond of that skinny little trigger most have now. I also thought about getting a Sig 1911, I saw someone showing off their Sig POW/MIA 1911 not too long ago, but short of finding one used it looks like I probably missed the run on those. Help me decide, I still have a few months before I start letting loose my money. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

While I was in the middle of rebuilding a 1897 takedown into a trenchgun I found a Norinco while visiting family in Ohio. I went back and did a little research and from what I gathered they are good if you are not going to shoot them very often and reliability goes down drastically when you start slam firing them. My 1897 was made in 1911 and so far after having it parked the only problem I have had with it was the extractors. Good luck in your search I love mine, wouldn't mind having another built from a 1897 solid.

Well that is a pretty nice looking pistol, if any are still out there when I get around to buying again I may have to try and snatch one up. The POW/MIAs will never be forgotten and everyone will be reminded of that any time I pull up behind you. I refinished the bowtie on my truck with the POW/MIA symbol.

I had the misfortune of driving a H3T for about a month and a half in Qatar. Granted I'm 6'2" so the comfort wasn't there for me. I had to push the drivers seat back to the point where noone could sit behind me. I drove about 35 miles a day and had to get gas once a week, so that was fairly average to me. It definantly did not like going off-road at all. I talked to the folks at AM General who run the H1 capabilities course and asked them about the H2 and H3. They told me that the H2 has about half the capablity with terrain and off-road ability as the H1 and the H3 was a joke, they called it a lifted sedan if I remember correctly, and with some other colorful language about it. I guess it looks cool, but I personally am looking to get my wife a Toyota Highlander. Better features and a more comfortable ride, even for me.

Sig p6, paint to follow...

This was my wife's Mother's Day present this year: I left the frame in the Sig Black from the factory, and the slide and small parts are done in a Titanium and Black mix Cerakote. She ended up loving it after she got over the fact itwas her Mother's Day present. -
I agree with piercedan. I went from using a KA VFG and now I use a MAGPUL AFG. It feels more natural than an old pickle stick and I have great control over any of my rifles I keep them on. AR-15 with 10.5" barrel and 14.5" barrel, SCAR-H with 16" barrel, but had to get the PWS rail extension for the SCAR-H. Give it a try and compare the 2 and shoot the 2, that's the only way to tell.

You have to get out and shoot with your gear and then you will find out that about half of that won't really work for you and then you will go find some other company than Blackhawk and UTG to supply your mall ninja needs.

I've got what I have from a MAGPUL sales rep that I know. I was playing around with a Remington 700 (M24), an old and a new AR-10 (SR-25 and XM-110) and I now carry a SCAR-H. It's been reliable out to 750 so far standing off-hand. I'm glad to hear that others have not had the same problems I ran into with mine. They are on a shelf next to my extra gun junk. I think I may be in the market for a SCAR-H when I find one at the right price. I'd like it to be set up how my current carry gun is now though, so I'll also be in the market for a Docter sight on a side mount and a variable power 10x scope. Uncle Sam has yet to give me anything useful, about 90% of what I use daily I've bought.

I've got about a dozen of these things sitting around for both my Knights Armament AR-10's. I have had the worst luck getting them to feed properly, I keep getting double feeds and I've had a few just fail to feed period. The standard aluminum magazines work just fine and I have't had to do anything with them. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? If not and you're thinking about getting some I'd just get one to start with just in case.

Where were you on the morning of September 11, 2001?

I was sitting in German class in High School, I want to say 11th grade. I spend that class getting the teacher to drop being a teacher for the day so we could listen to what was going on. 10 years later I'm out hunting... -
GunTroll, thanks for the suggestion on the 3/4 shank, I hadn't really put much thought in the 3/4 or full shank. As for the forced break in, it wouldn't be the first time I've put a pair of boots directly in the line of fire. The most I get is hot spots, thankfully my feet have gotten pretty tough over the last couple years. Oh and yea there are a couple of mountains around for me to get on. I'll have pictures when I get back from my trek. Lumber_Jack, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunantly orange and silver aren't really going to work where I am. I do like the design and features though, I just wish all good climbing/mountaineering equipment wasn't so brightly colored.

As the title states, I am looking for a good pair of winter mountaineering boots. The terrain is pretty rugged where I am and if it's anything like last winter I'll be looking at upwards of 3 feet of snow. I already have a few pairs of boots picked out, but I always like hearing peoples suggestions. Here is what I'm looking for; I need to be able to walk upwards of 10 miles comfortably in them, must be water proof, have a sole strong enough to handle rocky terrain, be cramp-on compatable (I'll be snow shoeing in these as well), they must come in a 13/13.5 (47/47.5), they must be a leather boot (I've never liked the plastic ones) and above all not be brightly colored (prefered earth tones or greys and blacks). Here are the boots I'm currently looking at: La Sportiva Men's Glacier Boot - Free Shipping on La Sportiva orders over $49 at Moosejaw_ La Sportiva Makalu Boot - Free Shipping on La Sportiva orders over $49 at Moosejaw_ Scarpa Men's Liskamm GTX Boot - Free Shipping on Scarpa orders over $49 at Moosejaw_ These will unfortunantly be an internet purchase and I'm not partial to one vendor over another. Thanks in advance for the suggestions and advice.

I snatched one up from D&T a few months ago while I was in there picking up a few other impractical guns (according to my wife). I was in there to pick up a Puma 92 in .454 and a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 and saw the Ranchhand in .45lc on the shelf so I had Dave throw that one in the pile as well. It is a blast to shoot, to me it doesn't matter how practical it is as long at it's a joy to shoot. I didn't grow up watching Steve McQueen, Dad grew me up on John Wayne more than anything. I've got my revolvers in all different calibers and a few lever actions but I still prefer to shoot my Ranchhand. It's an attention grabber and the .45lc had little to no kick out of it, atleast for me. One little thing though, I took it to MCSC and I was told that I can't shoot it on the pistol range because it was a carbine that fired a round bigger than a .22. I told the RSO that it was a pistol and he didn't believe me and asked what it was and who made it. Since he didn't know what it was he asked me to take it to the rifle range. I did as I was asked and proceeded to pull out the Super Redhawk and let that little guy breathe some fire. I say get one, you'll enjoy it.

Right now.... -
Well it worked in WWI so why wouldn't it work in WWZ?

Good job GunTroll, if I was home still I'd keep my ear out for you. Sorry I never made it down before I left, the projects I had lined up before leaving kept me busy, painting, building a book shelf from scratch and putting up new stair rails. I think it's good to see that you are willing to do this. I know it will turn out great from seeing your other projects. Good luck and I hope the project pans out well for you.

I got this little guy and it's works great on everything from Sig, Springfield XDs, 1911s and Glocks (at $155): Kaiser Shooting Uni-Tool Universal Front and Rear Pistol Sight Installation Tool - MidwayUSA used your idea and it works good, I like a brass hammer on brass punches though.
-
Glad to see she's coming together. If your slide was cut for a Colt extreme duty sights you would already have sights on her. I've been sitting on the set I've got for to long. I like the grips though, I can't wait to see it complete.

Aside from the coach gun and the revolvers pictured from left to right is a Puma 92 in .454 casull/.45 lc, next lever is a Ithica M49 in .22lr and last is a Rossi Ranch Hand in .45 lc. I love shooting revolvers and lever actions. The Ranch Hand shoots a little high but is consistent, the 92 is dead on and so is the Ithica. The Ithica was my dad's first gun.

He has had tennis elbow (I think that's what it's called) and my 45lc kicks to much so he can't shoot it as long. The heritage, he can shoot all day with little problem.
