  1. Shooters Choice All-Weather High Tech Grease is what I mainly use, light coat on the moving parts applied with my finger and most everything is good, if not that then there are always a few bottles of RemOil readily available at my house.
  2. Looks good, if I did stickers on my vehicle I would consider it.
  3. Going to have to agree with you on both accounts there. Don't have a Garand, yet, but I have one for my Enfield. I looked at the R1 but I really like the look of the full length frame and flat bottom slide, it just looks more unique to me. Maybe for the next 1911 project since you can't have too much of a good thing.
  4. I've only ever sold 1 firearm. I literally found it in my closet at my parents house after it sat there untouched for 4 years, forgot all about it. I normally wouldnt have sold it but my wife was very persuasive. I'm with TMF 18B, it's a cold day in hell when I sell one of my other 40. Thanks for everyone else's opinions, it sounds like I'll have a good shooter out of the box. I'm still going to tinker but I promised my wife I'd slow roll it, if you can believe that you're more gullible than her. Thanks again.
  5. Sounds like it was work the time and money. I got my wife a P6 last year for mothers day, wasn't what she was expecting but she likes it now. I've thought about a refurb on it with new springs, I might have to do that this year. I did put some night sights on it, a reduced recoil oprod and did a black and titanium cerakote refinish for her. Mine has 7/79 on the slide as well, so it could probably use some new springs. Enjoy it and run it ragged, I know my wife enjoys hers and shoots the piss out of it when we go to the range.
  6. I have it for computer, does me no good though since I didn't pack my computer. I'll be on there this spring and will update with a user name once I get to that point. I don't know how people pay the xbox and ps3 I can't work either on those controllers, I guess I'm missing that gene my generation has or video games.
  7. If you bought it new and haven't "modified" it in any way call Charter and see if you can send it back to them at their expense to have it fixed.
  8. I'm right there with you 6.8. Anyways back to the topic of all this. What are the opinions of RIA owners. I've got the trigger is gritty, I half expected that. What are some other thoughts on the overall performance of RIA 1911s?
  9. Well again as I said it's my learning curve gun. I'd like to start learning how to do more extensive work on them. I'm already a school trained armorer, I can pull them apart, put them back together, trouble shoot and fix various guns. I would like to start getting past the general stuff and get more into the weeds on them. Resale value on a gun doesn't matter to me. The vast majority of the guns I have will never be sold nor traded. As for putting money into a cheaper pistol, it's all part of the learning curve. I'd rather work on a cheaper gun that my wife will be comfortable with me getting than to spend the 1k+ on something that I can't learn on. It may be pointless to someone who doesn't have the desire to learn, I consider the knowledge I'll gain from it something that far surpasses the cost of learning. Buying and getting guns to me isn't that big of a deal. I accumulated over 15 guns in 2011 alone, and I've got a pretty extensive collection of various firearms since I started really getting into them a few years ago. I've already got a few revolvers that will be "practice" guns as well as other semi-auto pistols that I've already done work to and "upgraded" to make them how I want them. With a cheaper one, it keeps my wife off my back and allows me to learn. For those who are fine with "out of the box" guns thats good, I have several. I still do everything that I can to figure out everything I can about any firearm I own. If something were to ever break or to malfunction I would like to know what parts were the cause of those failures and what I need to do to correct them. Knowledge is key to me, and to get it you have to practice and "tinker".
  10. Very nice looking, you can't beat a good lever action rifle. I've got the Ranch Hand (.45lc) and a 92 (.454/.45lc) with plans to get a few more calibers to compliment my revolvers. Let us know how she shoots.
  11. I figured you can't really beat the price and it's a little tough to find the Springfield I'm looking for. After all the extra parts that would get replaced: barrel, bushing, hammer, mainspring housing, trigger, sear, disconnector, sights, oprod and spring and grip safety I'll be back around a grand or so...but I promised that would happen "over time"...so about a month for me once I get it since I'm impatient. I figured the trigger would be a little gritty and it would need a little refinement. This will end up being my "project" pistol to learn from with all that I've been reading. I'll sneak the Springfield in later, my wife's planning a trip to England next Christmas time frame for school so I'll be free to do what I want until she gets home and starts yelling. She just found my stash of AR parts that I've got in the garage and attic. She did some cleaning and talk about a rough phone call. Some of those items will be posted once she's back from the holiday travels. Apparently even with 3 AR's having some extra rail systems laying around is a bad thing to her.
  12. Only thing is, I don't care for CTD and I would rather buy from a local shop around Nashville than order it from somewhere online. I've got friends at numerous shops that I like to give my business to, when it comes to buying new guns. Used or antique guns I'll order online, but online orders are few and far between for me.
  13. Well I've had plenty of time over the last 6 months where I have been out of the gun buying market. I've still for a few more months to go before I get back into it so I've been on the prowl for opinions from fellow TGOers who have the firearms that I'm interested in. After reading reviews and specs on hundreds of guns I think I have found the one firearm that I want. I'm looking for a 1911 with a full length dust cover rail. So far I have only been able to find these on 3 pistols; the Springfield 1911-A1 Loaded Operator ($800-1200), the Springfield Operator TRP ($1500) and the Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911-A1 ($575-650). I've gotten myself in trouble with my wife on past gun purchases, so I've been looking to save myself the headache and getting the Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911-A1. I have a friend with a Springfield 1911-A1 Loaded Operator, if I can get him to let go of it for less than a grand I'll end up with that one. Since that's not likely to happen I'll be somewhere around $575-650 on the RIA. Since I can't go put one in my hands I'm working off of others thoughts. How is the fit of the parts on a RIA 1911? How is the trigger pull? How much "smithing" would have to be done to make it a nice running pistol? How's the durability? Should I need it how's the customer service? How does the RIA 1911's react to "drop in" parts? I've been reading a few pistol smithing books over the last few months so the majority of the work needed I will be doing myself. I like buying tools and for some reason my wife doesn't complain as much about that. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
  14. Got to skype a bit with the family for a bit this morning, watched my daughter open a few gifts. Santa brought her some touch screen leapfrog thing among other things. My wife got a new Dyson that she has been wanting. My wife sent me CODMW3 however forgot to include my computer in the package so I guess I have to wait a few more months to play it. My real presents will come in a few months, new gun safe (Browning SR42F from The Safe House) and pistol (Ruger Alaskan .454 or RIA Tactical 2011) early this spring. Just happy I got to see my daughters face light up with the presents.
  15. Good stiff bristle tooth brush, boresnake (per caliber), dental picks, some shop rags, Rem Oil, Shooters Choice copper solvient (as needed), brake cleaner (non-clorinated). If I can't get it with all that I need to disassemble it further.
  16. I've seen several things online and on here that it hurts me to pass up. D*mn job keeps me away about half the year, each year so I miss out on a lot. It's unfortunant, but I make up for it when I get back to TN.
  17. I take all the guns that I get and if it's going to end up going to my Dad for any reason, I make a powerpoint with instructions on disassembly and reassembly for him just incase he ever has to take them apart. They are pretty helpful for him. Sig's aren't all that bad just take a little finess to get some of the parts out. It is good to see that there are still some people out there that aren't afraid to take their firearms completely apart.
  18. Now since you've mastered the children's puzzles, now it's time to put on your big boy pants and do some DA and SA revolver takedowns and maybe try your hand at a Sig or Beretta. Just wait, if you ever get your hands on a Taurus PT1911. They have extra parts around the sear/disconnector for their hammer locks.
  19. Dolomite, you can make on like the Brownells one (PIVOT PIN DETENT INSTALLATION TOOL - Brownells) I've got one and they work great, until I got wise and bought one I was using the boxcutter method...thankfully I never cut myself. I will have to agree that roll pin punches are a must if you plan to assembly more than 1 AR, then again there are a lot of other weapons I've used mine for.
  20. I'm going to have to agree with you LagerHead, no way a Glock will be going on the back of my truck...I thought I wanted one for a bit, but then I pulled my head out of my butt and started looking for a new revolver.
  21. Once you find a place, just remember when you do first start off...safety is first and foremost, second follow the rule of "crawl, walk, run". Start off by confirming zero just so you know you're on. By crawling I mean do some "up drills" with your favorite EBR, some transitions from EBR to holstered pistol, do some "turn drills", if you're feeling froggy, some from the left, right and 180 turns. Once you're "warm" move to the walking stage. Some slow walks from 15 to 3 yards/meters doing up drills, move to some transitions while you walk. Once you get the forward movement down, move to some lateral targets. Get some from the left and then turn around and do ti from the right, again up drills transitioning as needed. Once you get good at that then move to your "run" phase. I've taught these drills to foriegn nations and US infantry squads for about 6 years now. I've got a lot more drills that can be described or shown if I had my computer with me that has the powerpoint instructions for the drills. In a pinch without land though I would suggest checking out some of the IDPA and other competitions around. I know that will be my goal this spring and summer to start going to them.
  22. Thank Lagerhead, I'll email my transaction ID to David and see where we can go from there.
  23. I know PayPal said it would take a few days possibly to show up that the transaction took place, but that's not my question. I paid through my wife's PayPal account and not the one linked to the email address associates with TGO. She has already received the receipt of payment from the forum's paypal account. Should it make a difference which email was linked to the paypal and which was linked to this forum or will it still go through here in the next few days? Thanks for the help, I'm just curious.
  24. Hopefully I've got a new blade coming. My friend's little brother has been tinkering with the hobby of knife making and made him a nice skinner knife. So I decided to throw a little business his way and asked for a Topps Tom Brown Tracker look-a-like in damascus steel to my specifications. I was told it would take him a little while to do so hopefully I'll get it in the next month or 2, I'll be sure to post some pics once it gets here.
  25. My friend Joe and I have talked about going, but for the last 4 years once or both of us have been off on some other trip. I'd like to go one day...but I'd probably end up oweing my wife big time.
