  1. State Government and Federal Government are different entities, Vanderbilt is not a part of either.   Examples of Federal Goverenment grants and contracts:     Research funding:  To perform cutting-edge research, Vanderbilt relies on considerable funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, and the Department of Energy, as well as from a number of other federal research funding sources. Agency Funding at Vanderbilt: National Institutes of Health National Science Foundation Funding at Vanderbilt Department of Energy Funding at Vanderbilt Department of Defense Funding at Vanderbilt Department of Education National Aeronautics and Space Administration National Endowment for the Humanities Source     If Vandy is now part of the state government b/c it recieves State funds in the course of business as both a College and Medical Center then by extension I now work for NASA b/c they also gave Vandy money and it sounds more fun than just saying that I work at a hospital!   :woohoo:       The other prong of this bill that insists that VU is an extension of the government points out that they have a police force! That force consists of less than 100 officers as part of the nearly 25,000 Vanderbilt employees. . .  :squint:
  2. I don't think the state has that option, I do believe most of the income from the state is via medicaid payments to the hospital.   What would you suggest the state do? Tell those recieving medicaid that they now can't go to the only trauma one center in the region?   What would you have Vanderbilt do? Turn patients in need of care away if they only have medicaid? Add the bills of those with medicaid to the hundreds of millions in charity care the hospital already gives to uninsured patients in need yearly?
  3.   "More than 24 million" is not really a significant number when your looking at an organizaion with an operating budget of 3.5 BILLION last year. :stunned:
  4.  "       The student groups' rights are NOT being trampled, they CHOOSE to apply for space on campus, Vanderbilt allows them on the campus if they agree to follow the University's rules. When you're on campus it's their ball, their court, their rules; end of story.            "The views and opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and they may not be used for advertising or product endorsement purposes."

  6. The New York Reload with the backpack full of revolvers was the most interesting bit to me. Proves that a demented and determined individual with some planning can almost always have a large advantage over even the best prepared common citizen.
  7.   That is an excellent option if you're capable of building a frame! When we moved I looked back at all the hours I spent sanding/blocking/painting at the old house and figured out that even at $20 an hour I'd do better to just buy the $500 screen at the new house.  :surrender:
  8. You want to set the projector up for a screen, not the other way around.(nothing's worse than having to move the projector to make a small screen change) I would find a screen that I would want to be able to run in the future, get the size of it's viewable area and calculate my throw for the projector making sure I could produce the desired size image without overworking the projector.(projectors' lamps get dimmer over time so if you start out needing all your projector's brightness you may soon find yourself dissapointed in it's performance.) You likely already have a good idea what you could run if you were to purchase a screen, I.E. don't paint based on a $3k Stewart screen if it won't ever be in the budget, choose a more affordable model from Elite screens, monoprice, ect. A screen is NOT the best place to spend large chunks of your budget for a theater. You may be happier with a painted screen than I was, but if I have a dedicated room I purchase a screen even if it's a just a cheap one. If your ambient light is not under control or your projector is on the bright side for your space, I would go with a grey screen, if you have excellent light control(no windows) or need a little more from your projector then go with a white screen. Here's my freshly assembled grey screen when I was doing my initial measurements for my room.
  9. I used my projector on a painted surface at the last house since I didn't have a dedicated room at the time. At the new house I decided to try a screen from monoprice. It's a 110" 2.35:1 was under $500 shipped to my door. I can tell the difference in it and a much nicer nicer screen but I've yet to have a guest that can. (I used to install high end home theaters and home automation) I'll get back in here and post more details after lunch for both the screen and the paint I mixed up to use at the last house.
  10. Sounds fun, I'm out tonight due to a prior engagement, but hope to see everyone next time. Have a safe event!     Erik
  11.   Good catch, I meant to put a most in there. :)  Still studying for my test so I fully appreciate any corrections any current HAMs have to offer.
  12. I am running out of cast bullits faster than normal, I have a few months before lack of factory ammo keeps me from shooting IDPA at NA or anything but it has put a crimp on some other purchases and I'm shooting my .22 much less than usual b/c I can't replace the ammo, which in turn drives up the cost of shooting further.
  13. Price wise for the features it is a great handheld for starting out. It will likely not be the easiest to start with but you could do it if you put your mind to it. What's hard to get across about some radios is that the more features they offer, the more complicated they are to get operational. These are not devises that you will unbox when you need them and pick through the menus intuitively setting up the radio on the fly. You will need to put several hours into reading the manual, choosing what frequencies to program into it based on your local services/repeaters, setting up the software and programming in the channels you want as well as selecting antenneas that will optomize the transmitter for the frequencies you want to be able to transmit on. Keep in mind that this radio only posesses 5w max on TX, to put that in perspective my 2m(same band) mobile in our responder's vehicles is a 65w transmitter, our radio room utilizes a 100w transmitter. That 5w radio will get word out great on the salt flats, but around Nashville unless your on top of a hill or have a large stationary antennea to attach it to it's not going to be too much better than an off the shelf FRS radio save for the fact you can put a more efficient antennea on it. Most radio communications are line of sight, so often antennea placement or height is much more important than watts. Having both makes communicating as consistant as possible which is why our radio trucks(ECRV) have 60ft masts with our antenneas on them. So while your 5w radios may work fine to call out to us, and we'll have the power to respond back that the message was recieved a pair of 5w radios will not have anywhere near that range from one to the other. I just wanted to add that R_bert's thread is an outstanding resource if your trying to get a grasp on all this stuff. I didn't know much about it until I got involved with the Red Cross a few years back and it's really opened my eyes to how useful that information has been and made me wish I had found a thread like his years ago. I can give you lots of real world experience using radios for communication when SHTF but I'm far from an expert on HAM. I operated sans license(not required if rendering aid in a disaster) for my first 2 years with the Red Cross now I'm studying to "upgrade" so I can use my radios all the time. :)
  14. I wish it was available here in Nashville, one of my friends has it just outside chatty and it's faster than my connection here at work.
  15. I might keep it in a bug out bag as a spare, but I have a Yaesu VX-8R that has proven itself very dependable when SHTF several times already and works on all 3 bands we typically use in a disaster.   Mine is much more expensive, but it's very reliable, works across 4 bands, and is submersable which is why I have it. My last handheld before this bit the dust during the Nashville flood. Water incursion and electronics don't get along and I knew that but if you need your radio and it's raining putting it away or keeping it dry isn't always a viable option.   I would probably get the $40 radio and get my license, use it a little bit and see if I thought HAM was something I would want to use in a disaster. It's much more complicated than a cell phone once you step away from simple GRMS radios, but much more capable if you take the time to learn it. Once you know your way around it's much easier to pick out a radio that best suits your needs. I know I wish I had purchased a submersible radio my first go round. :2cents:
  16. In an actual emergency or SHTF situation and you are calling for or rendering assistance - it's OK to operate a ham radio without a license.     That said, if you want to learn how to use that radio on HAM bands before you or someone else is in life threatening peril, you will need a license. They are not hard to aquire nor expensive. I will say that I'm on the radio all the time when SHTF but I volunteer for the red cross and if your stepping on our freqs. and not in immediate danger you will be recorded and reported to the FCC and likely fined after the fact.   So if you don't have a license think of the radio as more of a secondary way to dial 911. If you wouldn't be calling 911 for assistance in the same situation then you aren't authorized to be on the airwaves.   You may even get the radio and listen and find a bunch of clear frequencies right now and think it's NBD but as soon as the local cell site infrastructure is overwelmed in a disaster you'll be amazed how fast almost all of the different bands fill up with HAMs communicating.
  17. I had 2x in cart and descrtiption clearly stated 235 per box so I cancelled.
  18. Yikes that's at .75 a round +shipping! Irrelevant now as it's sold out, but I'm interested to see which description was correct.
  19. I've been the to the one off 12th ave. several times in the last few months and not seen ANYTHING blocked, but I bring my own DNS, or use an open DNS such as google's. 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4.
  20. Actually, In many municipalities you can still legally carry an â€œArmy or Navy pistol which shall be carried openly in the hand”. You don't need to test the police reaction to this as kwik has already done that for you.( I don't suggest trying it again) Belle Mead has also since revised that law so you would need to find another municipality with that version of the law still on the books.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43rbjjZ0nUw   http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/city-news/belle-meade-revisits-handgun-carry-laws
  21. When I was on staff at a summer camp we had a black powder rifle fired that had apparently been stored loaded for at least 6 years. Had  been put into storage years earlier without anyone actually checking if it was loaded! One of the guys wanted to use a rifle in a skit to "light" the campfire one week and got quite the surprise when the gun actually fired a round.(he had expected just the noise/smoke from the percussion cap) Thankfully we were trained to always point firearms in a safe direction even if they are "unloaded" and we only ended up with a lead ball sunk into a tree around 20 yards away.
  22. It works great contingent on cell signal. We tried it as a backup to comcast and it was a no go, ended up with DSL instead.
  23. I find lots of accounts of a "14 yr old Daphne Jordan" stating several different things. I also found that she attends a small private school with a 10/1 student/teacher ratio, and that she's an honors student. Here she's against gays in the boy scouts. http://youngpatriots.com/2013/02/boy-scouts-under-attack-please-help/ Honor roll http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130123/GJCOMMUNITY_01/130129813/-1/FOSCOMMUNITY0205 School website http://coebrown.org/ Odd piece where her brother is apparently against the 2nd. http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/01/29/gun-regulation-splits-country-and-splits-family She's On Twitter https://twitter.com/daphyduck098 Has a flickr account that's been around a few years though it seems every pic was uploaded the same day in sept. 2011 http://www.flickr.com/photos/djordansfamily/ Was starting to think it might be a farse attributed to her incorrectly until I found this. It is getting very rare that anything can happen in public that I can't find a picture of from at least one angle. :usa:
  24. Not too hard to believe, there is some on gunbroker ATM that has bid up to $25 per 100 of 40gr mini mags and has an hour left to go.   http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=330068008
  25. Ah, I was thinking the OP had mispelled CCI twice. :)
