  1.   The waiting list for a Lung is not like a line at the grocery store checkout, being listed longer does not move you forward at all. Lungs are distributed on a clinical need vs outcomes model. The sickest patient with the best chance of a positive outcome is given priority. She has been added to the adult list as well as the PEDs list but even so she stands very low odds of receiving an organ b/c of her CF and how well she is.
  2. . . . and the race to the courthouse by patients unhappy with their spot on the waiting list has begun.   http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/news/health/2nd-child-needing-transplant-gets-reprieve-690675/
  3.  A section of the adult lung is typically resected(removed) adding further trauma to the transplanted organ as well lowering it's ability to oxygenate the blood.      The precedent this judge has set with OPTN has many in the transplant community extremely upset. They didn't move this girl to the adult list as if she were 12, nor did they combine the adult and PED lists thereby negating the policy in question. They kept the lists separate and added her to the adult list as well, this essentially gives her two chances at an organ while every other patient on every other transplant list in the country has only one.
  4. Placement on the list depends on her medical condition, UNOS Liver, Heart, and Lung transplant waitlists are ordered in sickest patient getting organs soonest.(a pretty tight line is walked between sick enough to receive an organ while also being well enough to survive the operation) Kidney and Pancreas waitlists are currently first in-first out which is based on wait time though the center can grant exceptions for rare circumstances(such as a patient that has no viable access location for dialysis) or a patient can bring in a living donor to be transplanted faster.   She's now in a group of 216 adult candidates instead of just the 7 PED candidates. While more adults donate there are is much more competition in that particular region for organs.   To put it in perspective, were she listed our region she would be one of 2 PED candidates or one of 84 candidates on the adult list.   Organs are offered regionally first then for export to other regions, so it'a actually quite likely she could still end up with a PED organ from our region assuming that she's a different blood type than our single currently listed PED.
  5.       This x2  TOR is very good for remaining anon.
  6.   Sebellius had NO hand in writing the UNOS policies concerning procurement and allocation in 2005 or now. There is no rationing of organs nor will there be(they go in better whole), what your seeing is a scarce resource supply and huge demand. The only reasons there are so many regulations with organ procurement is b/c of the scarcity of donated organs in this country. If the politicians want to "fix" transplantation the solution is simple. Change nationwide donation registries to "opt-out" instead of "opt-in" overnight donation rates increase dramatically. With our lazy population I would bet that even fewer would get off their ass to "opt-out" as currently dot he same to vote. As a side benefit people receiving organs begin receiving them earlier while they are still healthy and outcomes further improve from the current years waiting approach.   While I generally wouldn't support such ad hominem , neither Sebellius nor Barletta are remotely qualified to make the kinds of medical decisions that they are acting like is common place in their profession(politics) during the video of the discussion.   Obamacare does not play into whether a patient is listed for nor receives an organ at most centers via the OPTN and UNOS, only how much and whether or not the center providing the transplant(at great cost) will get payed for it.   This girl has already been approved to receive a transplant(not denied as is stated in the video), she's even at the top of the PEDs waiting list for her region, I hope that she receives an organ soon but that is most often up to the families of the soon to be deceased.   We can divy up the pie any way the politicians want if they mandate it but the facts of the matter are that the very small number of organs currently available won't ever completely serve the portion of the population currently waiting without a major change to the donation system in this country.   Sadly for all our population the last actual medically trained candidate to be chair of H&HS was Dr.Louis Wade Sullivan who served under Bush senior until 1993. :stunned:     "The views and opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and they may not be used for advertising or product endorsement purposes."
  7. This is NOT Politics, nor is it a death panel.   Sebelius has almost no say in the regulations governing organ procurement and distribution. That is all handled by UNOS and the participating member hospitals that nominate and elect the board members for each organ who are tasked with carefully developing rules governing how procured organs are placed.   This young girl can have an organ that's why she's been accepted and listed with UNOS, she's just not likely to survive long enough to receive an organ. That's a lack of organ donations issue not a policy issue. It is magnified by the fact that she is in region 2 which has a much lower donation rate than several others nation wide.       "The views and opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and they may not be used for advertising or product endorsement purposes."
  8.   The major drop off in google shopping results(for many products not just guns) was b/c of the switch to paid inclusion which IMHO was a terrible idea.   http://www.ecreativeim.com/blog/2012/05/google-shopping-feed-goes-paid-only/     As for them not allowing payments for firearms, ammo, and components via google checkout I have heard at a dev conference that it was mostly a legal CYA decision due to all the different jurisdictions that checkout can be used in. (google doesn't want to be 3rd party to a possibly illegal sale, as such they have also banned sales of alcohol, cigarettes, and other regulated items via checkout.)
  9. Then to get the NRA instructor part covered   "To qualify as an NRA Instructor: Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified. Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearms handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing pre-course questionnaires and qualification exercises administered by the NRA Appointed Training Counselor. Candidates must satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course in the discipline they wish to teach (e.g., NRA Basic Pistol Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting that training." If I were guessing what basic trainer courses I would want before I even looked at training others both in the classroom and on the range I would start with the 5 below.   Basic Pistol Shooting Personal Protection in the Home Personal Protection Outside the Home Home Firearm Safety Range Safety Officer
  10. Seems pretty clear to me   1340-2-3-.06 INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS.   (1) Public Handgun Safety Schools may use handgun instructors who are a full time, salaried, POST certified law enforcement officer approved as a firearms instructor by the chief administrative officer of his or her agency and who conducts Handgun Safety Courses for his/her agency or another Public Handgun Safety School.   (2) Private Handgun Safety Schools shall use instructors which must meet the following minimum qualifications: (a ) Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age; (b ) Shall not have been convicted of a felony or any drug or alcohol related offense in the past ten (10) years; (c ) Shall submit proof of the completion of a Department approved firearm/handgun instructors training course; and,   1. 11. Google releases data about the requests, which the EFF and other use to fight them going forward. Here are the stats from the US in the last half of 2012- Via "Subpoena" 5,784 requests affecting 10,390 google users Via "Other"(likely letters of NS)758 requests affecting 1,249 google users Via "Search Warrants" 1,896 requests affecting 3,152 google users Transparency Report You need to get MAD at your legislators for things like the patriot act that let these requests happen without judicial oversight. The releases above involving a search warrant, or subpoena don't worry me nearly as much as the "Other" batch.
  12.   http://www.scribd.com/doc/116435469/7th-Circuit-Court-overturns-Illinois-concealed-carry-ban   Page 20-21 Has the summary and 180 day stay to "allow the Illinois legislature to craft a new gun law that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment as interpreted in this opinion, on the carrying of guns in public."
  13.     It happens faster then you'd think, I though one of my shotguns was at our place in Oregon for months(all winter) until I found it in the back of one of the the safes here. I ended up making a spreadsheet to track them between the various houses and safes. Not the most convenient solution but better than losing track of them by trying to do it all by memory.
  14.   I was totally thinking to myself that one of my little j frames could end up in a bag by accident if I was careless. . . Then the picture loaded!
  15. I shoot my reloads and either of my mentors' since they taught me most of what I know about casting and reloading and we all share obscure molds and equipment. Other than those 2 people and my grandfather's reloads which are dwindling with every trip to the range I don't shoot anyone else's. I don't know that I wouldn't but there is just no need. I keep good inventory of most components and anything I need I'm reasonably self sufficient at loading. (One of my mentors recently retired and now he does almost all of our crew's casting, not that the others of us can't but otherwise he says he gets bored stiff on the days he can't fish.)
  16. I've been using an app called "posted"  for a few months now. It seems to work pretty well and I've been adding to the local database where I can.
  17. I've almost shot up all the .38 stash that I inherited and I'm still trying to decide if I want to change now or stick with the "family recipe". I can barely read my grandfathers 40+ year old chicken scratch but I know the powder was always Bullseye and the bullet was always his home cast semi wadcutters.
  18. I typically mow with a Honda riding mower that I havent been able to kill in 18 years of mowing but this morning it was acting stubborn so I borrowed a 60" exmark. It took me longer to get it on and off my trailer than it did to mow. My yard isn't smooth enough to mow flat out with it but dang that thing can mow some grass in a hurry.
  19. I'm overjoyed, apparently I will finally be able to legally drive from my doorstep to my in-laws' for holidays without having to stop and disarm at the IL state line. There are 168 pages in the bill and I'm only around page 30 but It's much better than I originally expected. . .     Original bill text available below-   http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/98/HB/09800HB0183sam005.htm
  20. After 15 years of carrying my original leatherman or my SOG on my belt I finally decided to pair down what I carry most days. Moving from being an automtive technician to a desk job greatly changed what I needed daily. No matter which of my single blade knives I carried I still missed a few of the tools I used to have handy. I generally have learned to dislike most of my older SAKs b/c most just had too many tools I never used enough to be worth the bulk. Well apparently my wife was listening.(and noticed all the uncarried knives that were laying around on the dresser) She got me what very well may be the best fit for a pocket knife/multi-tool for my current daily environment I've been carrying it for a month now and still find myself amazed at how often it has the tools I need without any that I don't. With the the flashlight I've taken to carrying with it I've cut my accessory carry weight from 14oz to less than 3oz, and I have 2 less things on my belt. New knife is a Victorinox Cadet with Alox scales, and the flashlight is a streamlight microstream.
  21. I use Suspend SC for around our house and pool. With a large Bug Zapper running a few hours a night close to the creek. (The Suspend SC is very bad to use in/around fresh water sources as it is hazardous to marine life)
  22. Wish the NTSB would spend half as much time addressing cell phone use, girl texting a friend about commencement rear ended me last week while I was sitting still waiting on the light to change on west end in broad daylight.
  23. I'm the same way, I've been known to spend 3x the money and double the time to not have to fool with something that shouldn't need frequent changing. BMW can't seem to make a PS hose that doesn't weep after 30k and the plastic PS reservoirs are crap. Problem Solved.(shouldn't have ever been a problem to start though)
  24. Mine ate up 2k rounds of federal bulk in the last 3 months, I'd let it eat more but I pulled the plug on the wife shooting it until I can buy some more bulk .22.  :ugh:
  25.   There is less metal in used transmission fluid, but I assure you that it is there. The clutches and bands wear at a faster and faster rate as the fluid begins to wear. Most transmission fluid is "worn" as chemical friction modifying compounds are slowly broken down. This can be drastically accelerated by over heating the fluid or allowing contaminants to build up in it.
