DaveTN, the reason I have a HCP is "just in case". If I get pissed and quit (not likely), get suspended or fired (hopefully not likely), or anything else happens that causes me to no longer be allowed to carry as a LEO, I don't want to have to wait on the state to issue me a HCP.
Another thing to keep in mind. Some departments restrict what you can carry off-duty. Until not long ago, either Memphis PD or Shelby Co S.O. (don't remember which it was) would only allow their guys to carry their duty weapon off-duty. Now, many departments require you to qualify yearly with whatever off-duty gun you want to carry and it must meet certain requirements. With a HCP, you can carry whatever you want to under the permit and not carry as an LEO.
