That's another one I'd be interested in watching. Don't get me wrong - I hate poachers and am thankful for any way they get caught, but I don't know that it's constitutional.

Did she move to another state and take the gun? Or did she sell it to a resident of another state?

I'd be interested in seeing how this would hold up if under scrutiny. I know the TCA exists, but there are other issues here besides checking the license. Like seizing a person's freedom of movement with no reasonable suspicion or probable cause. It isn't going to go real well for THP. The fourth amendment will trump TCA every time. I was talking to a THP trooper about this a while back and he said that most troopers have pretty much stopped doing it because they realize this.

I tried casting my own bullets for a while. It was ok, but for some reason I didn't enjoy doing it like I enjoy reloading. Went back to buying bullets. Lead and plated bullets can be had for a reasonable enough price. To each his own, I guess. I am glad I learned how to do it, if nothing else.

First, if you look at the package when you buy those license plate covers, it says something to the effect of "Not legal in all states. Check your local laws..." As far as why they sell them? Because people keep buying them. Dave beat me to the TCA, but I will reemphasize one part of it - "No tinted materials may be placed over a license plate even if the information upon the license plate is not concealed." Just depends on the officer. We all have the tint meters. Personally, I won't mess with anyone except for the cars whose windows look like they're painted black. Some guys enforce it like it's going out of style. Others have never written a ticket for it. There are a LOT of cops who won't mess with window tint or tinted license plate covers. Still doesn't make it right. I may not stop people for speeding until they hit 11 or 12 over the limit, but the people doing 10 over are still speeding.

Why not just take it off, since it is illegal.

Just found this: Mosin Nagant Rifle Specifications Looks like most Russians are Birch. I was wrong about the beech. Apparently Poland, Hungary, and Romania used birch, but the Fins used Arctic Birch.

I think the wood most commonly used was birch and beech. IIRC, I think the Fins used mostly beech and a lot of your 91/30s were birch. I could be wrong though. As far as the rest of your markings, I'm not 100% sure. I think you're thinking correctly, but someone with more knowledge than I have will be along soon.

I'm with 6.8. I think a light taper crimp would probably be a good solution.

I tried that once. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but it was taking me too long. An actual heat gun may do better, just avoid burning anything. BTW, with the boiling water / steam method, I always use a BIG pan of water. It works on a good size area of the stock all at one time.

Cap's idea is a good one. If you can't wait, though, you can do what I always do. Completely disassemble it. Boil the small parts (all the cosmoline will come right out). Then soak everything with Breakfree CLP and wipe dry. Then, take the barrel and stock and hold them in the steam above the boiling water. The cosmoline will melt off of the metal and start seeping out of the stock. The metal parts require one or two quick wipes with a paper towel. With the stock, you'll go through several dozen paper towels and could probably continue forever as I don't think it's possible to get all of it out. Just get a good bit out and you'll be good. While you're doing it, just keep telling yourself that "cosmoline is our friend... cosmoline is out friend..." Good luck!

I think the concern here is laminated glass like windshields. Many brands of non-bonded hollow points will separate (lead from jacket) when they hit certain types of glass. There is a local LE agency around here who recently switched to bonded ammo. From what I heard, an LEO shot at a suspect who was trying to run him over, but the round came apart when it hit the windshield. Supposedly, the suspect ended up with a cut on the nose instead of a bullet through it. Don't know how true the story is (or what details may be wrong), but bullets separating is a reality.
