I have a question for everyone.
musicman replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Wow! I had been wondering about some way to collect all that dew in the mornings. Brilliant idea! Just need a sediment filter/let the water settle out. Also, we have a metal roof on the house now, so rainwater should be pretty clean. In the next few months one of my goals is to source water containment barrels mainly for gardening purposes, but they would also be very handy in a bad situation. -

Weeellll.... I had a huge, detailed response typed and deleted all of it. We have some supplies, and am working mainly on better/more dense dry food options and then better methods of water collection and purification. I view that as our main needs. We have basic medical, defense, and shelter options covered. Everything can be improved upon, of course, but if utilities are no longer available, I believe water is my weakest point. We always have enough on hand in bottles, etc for at least two weeks by most measures. However, if poo hits the bladed propulsion device to the point that basic services are interrupted, I don't see them coming back online quickly. -
Just piling on to the rest of the members saying that this guy giving advice is a dope. Stick with the M9 and get a j frame for backup. This really isn't reinventing the wheel any more. Isn't the j frame pretty much the #1 carry revolver in the country? Things get a little less clear when we get into automatics, as we've had something like 3-4 new micro pocket pistols in the last year or so released from the major mfrs.

Scuttlebutt regarding W231 and HP 38 being phased out?
musicman replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I've been falling in love with all the AA pistol powders. I prefer it in light loads, especially, where charge weights can get kind kind of squirrelly with powders of larger particulate size when using a Lee Pro Auto Disc measure. The AA stuff is like fine sand in an hourglass and measures beautifully. I still have many other powders and will continue to use them, but pretty much just buy AA when I see it, and am fine "burning" through the rest of the stuff without replenishment. I don't feel I'll be at a disadvantage when I load the last of my HP38/231 stash. There are SO many good options out there that any one or two going away won't cause me too much pain. I see Ramshot powders a lot more than I did 5-6 years ago, and have had a few good results with things like Zip and Trueblue, Enforcer and Silhouette. I don't prefer them to the AA stuff mainly because there seems to be less data available for them. For AA, I use #2 pretty much wherever Titegroup and HP38/231 is used, like a light target load for wheelguns. #5 for mid range auto loads where Titegroup would be at its max pressure. In those cases, it seems #5 has a little more breathing room. #7 for stronger 40 and 10mm loads. #9 for heavy Magnum revolver stuff where I also use 296/h110 and 2400. -
Nope. That one's a 38. I have one. ;-)

Gorgeous!! Shoot it yet? One of the best handguns the world has ever seen. Congrats!

Stoeger Cougar $299 at Academy. 9 or 40. Look 'em up. Great gun, screamin' deal. Under $340 after tax and bg check. That, or the S&W SD pistols. Same price and caliber choices. Honestly though, at that price I think the Cougar is the better bang for the buck, even if it just comes with one mag.

Silly question... are these basically CZ branded DW made 1911s?

I'm an M&P man through and through. Never have shot a Glock that felt comfortable to me. I can shoot them just as well, but it takes more effort. The M&Ps point more naturally for me, and though there is variation in the M&P triggers from gun to gun, I always find them easier to master than the stock Glock triggers. Simply my opinion. Look around next time you're at the range... there's almost always someone shooting an M&P. Ask them for a go at it. :-)

Not that it matters, but yea, Savage. Not impressed with the Mossbergs I've played with. I'm not really a bolt rifle guy (yet) but DID go through a search over a year ago when I bought a .270. I was keeping it fairly cheap and ended up choosing a Marlin XL7 and am very happy with it, especially since it was under $300. Much nicer finish than the Mossberg, and smoother action than the Ruger American. For some reason an Axis in .270 just wasn't to be found when I was looking, as that might have been in the running. Since then I've gotten a Smith AR10 and now I want to add a bolt brother to the pack for it. It'll be a nicer Savage. This one's got me all worked up, but I like a nice wood stock, too... I dunno what to do!! http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/savage-10pt-sr-308-winchester-bolt-action-rifle?repChildCatid=1320220

I have the 13rd 930 and love the crap out of it. Cycles everything from #8 birdshot to heavy slugs/buck without a hitch. If I was looking for another semi 12g, I'd jump all over that at 4 bills. Do they make mag extensions for it? I paid almost $700 for mine after transfer, and feel it was worth it. Let us know what you do! :-) Here's a terrible video of me being a dork and shooting a guitar. That was Spartan (Academy brand) 00 buck, then some 10MM just to make sure it was dead. https://youtu.be/PK1OL8Cyv48

Walmart Getting Out Of AR and Pistol Accessories
musicman replied to Moped's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
This. When I see mom & pop's selling dust cover and forward assist ARs for around $600 OTD, I can't imagine there's a lot of margin left for Wally to undercut them and still remain profitable. -
Yep. Shot a buddy's G21 last week. Took me a couple mags to find the break, then one more mag to realize how important follow through is with the stupid thing. It can be done, but it ain't a single action... that's for sure! As for the ammo, I've found the Freedom reloads to be excellent in my Witnesses, but those were the 180gr XTPs. If you can find it, I just went through a couple boxes of the Sig 180gr FMJ and really liked it. Best so far has been my AA7 hand loads, but that doesn't help you now. PMC bronze was fine as well, but just 40+p.

Looks great! Congrats! -
I hear ya. Especially the one you (and I) thought of when you clicked this thread. :/

All you need to do is find a bear that identifies as a horse, or maybe a tank... then you're golden!

Ok. I've been wanting a li'l bolt .22. That's gunna be the one. Thanks for doing my research and testing for me! That's exactly what I want. Just add optic and go, then suppresor later down the road. That'll work beautifully with my CCI Quiets, I bet.

I'm going to be going for a similar build soon, and am probably going this routehttps://www.primaryarms.com/Yankee_Hill_20_Inch_Barrel_Threaded_Fluted_1_9_p/yhm-79-tf.htm Plus, friends don't let friends buy from Cheaper Than Dirt. :-D

Hm. Very good idea on the TP. Does anyone in Smyrna have a vacuum sealer and would you be willing to offer your poo-paper-packing-prowess for a box of ammo? I'd like to pack maybe 6-8 rolls to split up in BOBs for each vehicle, and my larger "get to the farm" kit. Space is a premium in those tubs.
-
Oh yea, that reminds me, a P51, too! And I am impressed at your dedication to carry a chainsaw with you at all times, haha!
-
Yup, was just there a few minutes ago. ;-) By golly I just got a box o' lowers a couple weeks ago! Oh well, adding one of these tp the list.

Small fishing kit, small kit for starting fires. I have a little mess of strong key rings and a few carabiners, and a small spool of 100 yds of finer paracord (in addition to a regular 100' paracord) and a 5x8 tarp which is always in the trunk. Figure that can work into a small shelter. Small metal mug. I guess it'd be a handy cup or small cooking pot. I keep meaning to get a smaller folding saw and toss in there. I'm no survival expert by any means. Heck, I haven't gone camping in 20 years, and that was in a pop-up. Oh, and spare loaded mags. I have 3 M&P 40s that can run full size mags (Pro, regular full size, and compact with adapters) and there is always at least one around. Four mags with 180gr HSTs in the bag, in addition to the mag in the gun, and usually another 1 or 2 in the glove box. I'm a mag whore.
-
Very cool! Now I want on of those clear lowers. :/
-
Dude hocking them at the NRA show nearly beat me to death when I said "looks like a CZ75." He went on and on to tell me how it's not the same at all, then ended with "feels like a 75 and uses the same mags." Nifty, and if all the stuff he said about how great the gun was is 5% true, it shoulf be a fine pistol.

Yikes. $30/lb isn't a value around here. Just got 1lb of 800x for $22.99 and 1 lb of AA7 for $28.99 at the Outpost in Murfreesboro last week, and they don't necessarily have a reputation for nice pricing. Titegroup and AA2 were on hand as well, but I didn't check pricing as I have plenty of both. The Reloader's bench in Mt Juliet has rotating stock at about the same prices, sometimes a couple bucks less. Y'all buy from David at the gunshows? His daughter gave me a great deal on 5lbs of AA5 awhile back. Great folks.
