If it makes you feel any better monkeylizard, I haven't been deer hunting in about 30 years. Same reasons you have...no where to hunt.

I try not to miss any westerns or war movies. Luckily, my wife love them too, so it won't be hard to drag her out to see it this weekend.

To be honest, I can't say, really. We only shot about 4 or 5 rounds with the shroud off and I was paying more attention to the sound signature and how little the muzzle moved. I didn't really even think about that, but I'm curious now, so I'll have to get back to you on that. Also, I was using a Vortex red dot with a Primary Arms 3X magnifier at the time, which makes the dot bigger than my target spots. It made it easier for me to see how much the muzzle was moving, but didn't help too much with making tight groups.

I am completely sold on 2 piece muzzle devices now. They truly offer the best of both worlds. I'd love to see what a longer shroud would do to improve the noise reduction, but I'm even more interested to see what a high quality muzzle break would feel like.

I finally got this thing out to the range today! It was an absolute pleasure to shoot. I tried it with and without the shroud and could tell a huge difference. With the shroud in place it did just what it was supposed to do. Seemed like it redirected the sound noticeably downrange. Plus, the fireball it spit out the front was freakin' wicked. My friend who went with me shot it as I stood off to the side, so I could see it too. I'd say it belched a 14"-18" flame. With the shroud off, there was a marked decrease in recoil and it was considerably louder. I had to stand off to the side again to truly appreciate how much sound that shroud was pushing downrange. To say it was just noticeable is an understatement. Sadly, I had closed my gas block expecting to tune it when I got there, but I left the wrenches at the house. So, I had to shoot it in single-shot mode all day. Now I can't wait to get it out there to see how easy it is to get back on target with the muzzle brake. I've never shot a rifle with a brake before, just the plain flash hiders, like an A2 birdcage. If I was impressed with single shots, I'd imagine I'll be really happy with it when I get to try follow-up shots.

Several of my co-workers and I bought Anderson lowers from EW in the past couple of months. They were aluminum and of good quality, especially for the price. I wish I could say the same for their uppers.

Got a budget in mind? $500 Delton vs $650 S&W M&P Sport vs $2200 LWRC vs nice build for around $850? edit: I've even heard tale of an $800 Colt on here lately.

I wouldn't be too worried about who all got your private/personal information. I'm sure they did the right thing with your info and turned it over to the BATFE. You can feel safe knowing the bureau is possibly storing your information and will coordinate with DHS for your own protection.

I feel like I'm reading a TGO version of a Disney movie. I'm gonna go fill my wife in on the details, she's anxious to hear how this story turns out. Again, I'm happy as hell for you on getting your best friend back.

That is stupendous news all the way around. I'm especially happy to hear they didn't ask you for money. I'm with you, I'd have donated generously too...good on you, sir. I bet your buddy was damn glad to see you too, huh?

UPDATE: It's an Anderson upper. With a S&W upper/barrel, the BCG/CH work fine. With a S&W BCG/CH his Anderson upper still gets stuck. So, he borrowed a brand new Anderson upper and installed everything (only took 32 ft lbs to line up the gas tube this time). VERY careful not to stress any part this time. And the same damn thing happens with both BCG/CH combos. Here's what we noticed: both receivers have severe scarring inside the channel where the charging handle rubs against the top. There is corresponding damage to a new charging handle and the bumps on the CH near the front are damaged. Also, we see badly worn finish where the CH grabs the BCG on both parts from the force needed to remove the round. Since we're 100% sure he didn't damage the 2nd upper during install, we think they bought from a bad batch of uppers. He bought a new one (DPMS this time) and is going to TRY to get Anderson to exchange or refund. I can't thank you guys enough for your input. I'm sorry I can't post pics right now, but I'll ask him to send me some pics. Anything you can think of that I missed?

Look what I found at Walmart in hermitage!
BigK replied to ironsniper1's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
There's been a lot of times I wanted to shoot my Mosin bad enough to pay $12 for a box of ammo, so I didn't have to shoot the corrosive stuff. Sometimes I can squeeze in a few hours to go shoot, butI'm too busy to clean my guns immediately afterward or don't want the hassle, so I have to leave the Mosin at home. -

looks like that shelf tag is for .223 ammo -
BTW...glowdotGlock, congrats on finding your buddy and give the guy the benefit of the doubt first. It's way more likely that he's trying to do the right thing.

I love dogs and hate to see anything bad happen to one at large, so I understand the people who think they need to rescue every dog they see. However, some of the dogs out there being rescued are actually being abducted, but how do you know? You have to make a judgement call. Here's how I decide: If the dog is friendly, clean, healthy, well-fed, and happy, I assume the dog has a good owner and dropping him off at the pound is the fastest/safest way to ensure he'll be reunited his owner. That's the first place people look. In fact, I may call animal control to recover the pet, so I don't look like a pet kidnapper. If the dog is in any other condition and isn't aggressive, I feel like taking it home to clean him up, feed him, and maybe even pet him a while is a good thing. I'd still take pics and notify the pound that I have him, because that's where the owner will look first. I'd still consider taking him in, because I get attached to critters pretty easily. You can always rescue the dog from the pound before it's put down, if no owner shows up.

Thanks for the input Luke E. I had similar thoughts about the vise blocks (yes clamshell). They're el cheapos from Amazon, but he'd have had to really crank hard on that vise and likely cracked the blocks to squish his receiver. I just didn't wanna rule out any possibility just yet. I had him try a round in in the barrel and verified it yesterday myself. The rounds drop free and are clearly shouldering far enough in. My only reservation about the receiver being twisted was that it's so much harder to extract a live round than it is to charge the rifle on an empty chamber. It seems the cam pin would hang up whether there's a round in the chamber or not...same with the lugs on the bolt. My only guess is the part of the extractor that runs down the side of the bolt and acts like a leaf spring is what's hanging on something when a round is chamber due to the fact that it'd be just slightly spring outward. Does that sound possible? If not, any suggestion on what part of the charging system would cause this kind of lockup with a round in the extractor vs no round?

I feel the "any enemy of my enemy is my friend " rule couldn't possibly be better applied to any group than Planned Parenthood, if you're Pro-Life. As far as the proposed amendment goes, You touched on the 2 points I don't trust either side about. An over-zealous conservative congress could cause the death of a young woman by outlawing her ability to get a life-saving abortion AND any liberal congress (zealous or not) seems to want to remove all restrictions and regulations. edit/add: This amendment only sounds good now, while there's a fairly conservative congress, but that could change with the wind in the next election. This state is historically conservative, but it's also historically democrat.

I wanted a new bow so bad I couldn't stand it this spring. My bow is probably 30 years old and no where near as cool as the new ones. So, I shopped all over and decided on the features I had to have, like string stops and peep sights with tubing, and the newest cams, and all. Then I walked into the archery shop where I get my bow worked on and he more or less talked me out of it. My conclusion based on his advice and some soul-search: my bow is pretty (albeit not as cool), I know how it shoots, it's damn accurate, and 50 more fps won't make me a better shooter. I still want a new one, but I'm glad I put it off a little longer.
-
...but it's beautiful like it is. edit: seriously though, I'd love to see just how light and maneuverable a home defense shotgun could be without breaking the bank or sacrificing too many features.

Between what I've read and how it has been explained by 3 or 4 guys on 99.7 WTN, this is as accurate a description of the current process as I've heard. Our state constitution calls for a popular election of these judges, but it hasn't been done in decades. Furthermore, popular elections for judges sounds worse to me. I'd be surprised if 1 in 20 voters know enough about any prospective judge to make an informed decision. The rest will end up voting based on which trial-lawyer funded judge they see the most commercials for on TV. Not to mention the out of state money someone else mentioned. It'll be damn near impossible to get a good conservative judge or one that's tough on crime to be elected if this fails. I'd much rather see my elected governor choose, his selection be approved by my elected congress, and I still get to vote not to retain in 8 years than to see the decision rest on the shoulders of an ignorant voting populace who only know what they saw in commercials. They already do that with other elected officials and at least they have an R or a D beside their name to give you some remote clue how they'll act in office.

What kind of belt do you wear with your holster?
BigK replied to jeff43's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
My reloading calipers say my Hank's belt is .237" thick. -
I just found out today that he's having big problems manually extracting a round from his rifle. It's stuck so tight that I had to "pogo" it real hard to get the round to extract. This seems like way to much force for it to be as simple as a short throat and bullet engaging rifling. Without a round in the chamber, it still cycles kind of stiff and not very smoothly. It's real stiff at first 1/3 of the way back, then catches about 1/3 way back slightly, then gets noticeably easier after that. Do you think it's possible that he torqued the receiver when he applied so much force to remove that barrel nut? He did use receiver blocks, but is it possible he clamped it so tightly in the vise that he partially collapsed the receiver in?

With a deep freeze the way you wrap/seal it seems to matter most after a year or so, but with those damn frost-free models, you're lucky to get a year, even with the best vacuum pack sealer. edit: I have one of each and the frost-free model is only fit for fast use stuff like frozen store bought veggies and pizzas and such. I keep my good stuff in the deep freeze.

What kind of belt do you wear with your holster?
BigK replied to jeff43's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I've been wearing this exact same belt 7 days/week for almost 7 years. The velcro is finally wearing out, so I ordered a new on yesterday. I caught the first one on sale for $18, but the new one cost me $25. If I get another 7 years out of the new one, it'll be money well spent. -
As awesome as this episode was, I hope they didn't blow the entire CGI/Special Effects budget on the opener, LOL.
