    Ticks

when i was a teenager, my granny would soak an old rag in kerosene and tie around my grandpa's ankles when he'd go out to cut wood. I tried it when I hauled hay to keep chiggers off. It works, but it irritates your skin pretty bad too.
  2. No idea if heat would help, but it feels like magic marker ink. There's no noticeable thickness added and it stays on good enough that I can't scratch it off with a fingernail.
  3. I emailed Enco, the company I bought it from. One of their technical people and I emailed back and forth all week. He seemed to think it'd work, but he emailed an engineer over at ITW, the parent company that makes Dykem. The engineer said if I clean the brass well first with alcohol, it should actually penetrate the brass and stay on until I remove it with alcohol. Being lazy, I dumped 100 pieces of brass into a gallon Ziploc bag and shook them up with a couple ounces of red Dykem. There were spots where the brass was obviously greasy, but otherwise the dye soaked in very well. I'm going to load them this week, shoot them next weekend, and give them a tumble in some corn cob to see what happens. I'll let you know.
  4. Evel Knievel couldn't even jump this far!
  5. That's a fuzzy line in the sand in my estimation. That's why the law was written to say the victim must have "reasonable" fear of death or serious injury. He may not know where that line is or whether it's too late at that point to defend himself.
  6. I freely admit that the extent of Zimmerman's injuries could have been exaggerated. That would actually support the fact that one investigator was pushing for his arrest didn't believe his story. I just saw that video of him being brought into the sally port and I didn't see blood on his face or head. BUT, he was treated on the scene and that blood may have been cleaned off of him by paramedics, who knows. If those injuries are superficial, then I agree with DaveTN and others who say he should have taken the azz whoopin and limped home. At some point the alleged head-bashing ceased long enough for him to draw his weapon and shoot the kid. Still, it's all more about speculation and less about facts for now.
  7. Even as an HCP holder, I mostly agree with the first part of your statement about wanting to believe it's our get of jail free card. A butt whoopin' isn't usually life or death, so shooting someone to protect yourself from one isn't warranted. I'd argue that if a teenage football player 4" - 6" taller and much more athletic punches a pudgy, out-of-shape guy and knocks him down that's an azz whoopin' and one guy is winning. Maybe the scuffle continues and the better fighter mounts the other and lands a couple of blows...still an azz whoopin' and still winning. When heads start getting smashed against sidewalks, it immediately changes from being an attempt to whoop their azz to trying to do serious harm or kill someone. This is not winning, this is attempted manslaughter/murder. Maybe that's a technicality based on the reports of one case, but I'm just spelling out the differences in this ONE case. In general, I agree 100%. You can't go pulling your ccw to bail you out of a fist fight, even if you didn't start it.
  8. Based on what I've learned from the links posted here and elsewhere: I don't believe Martin should have to run away instead of standing HIS ground when someone suspicious was following him on a dark rainy night. He didn't seem to decide to that, he ran instead (no shame in that, likely the smartest move). I don't believe Zimmerman "picked a fight" or "caused the escalation" by simply keeping someone he thought looks suspicious in sight until cops arrived. He seemed to think the guy got away according to the tape I heard. I do believe Martin should have called 911 and reported some creep following him, if he really was threatened by that. Despite having time to do so, he decided he didn't need to do that. I do believe that Zimmerman thought he was in deep doo doo or there wouldn't be multiple witnesses and 911 recordings of him screaming for help. I don't care how bad I need an azz whoopin, I ain't letting someone bash my skull against a sidewalk...even if I started it. I don't care how mad I am that I'm being followed by some creep...it's no longer self-defense when I am sitting on his chest hitting him and smashing his head against the ground.
  9. never mind...missed a few pages
  10. Yeah, I'm starting to realize that ONE 32oz bottle would be too much....I ordered TWO, one red and one blue. I may be giving away free samples in the near future, LOL.
  11. I haven't actually read anything about season 2 on dvd. If they do things like most TV shows do, they'll release the dvds a few weeks before the next season. I hate that!
  12. It's rather lucky that Maverick and Goose didn't kill anyone.
  13. I looked at the Dykem High Heat markers, but they are enamel. That would add thickness like you said. The layout fluid was half the price of the stain, so I got cheap and went with that route. Maybe I can change my order, we'll see.
  14. I was hoping to stain my 9X18 rounds red and my 9X19 rounds blue to distinguish them easily and to help me find all MY brass at the public range. I intended to use a slow cordless drill with a bore mop chucked in place to pick up the shells and turn them while a put a stripe near and in the rim.
  15. Are you serious? I was told this stuff will stay put even during a tumbling or 2. Should I have gotten the transparent stain instead?
  16. They may be easier (not sure, haven't tried yet), but I'm not sure Sharpies are actually cheaper. The big ol fat ones with a nice chisel point are around $4 each. Right now you can get a 32 oz jug of red or blue layout fluid from ENCO (http://www.use-enco....?PMK0NO=1308767) for only $10.29 (online price). Plus, there's a coupon code (NCCMAR) on RetailMeNot.com which gets you free shipping on a $25 order. I haven't tried it yet, but I just put in an order to Enco for a 32 oz jug of each color and a 2 oz bottle of each (just to get the nice felt tip applicators and refillable bottles). It came out to just under $28 total. For that price I could get 7 or 8 big sharpies and there's no way they'd outlast 64 oz of Dykem. I hope it works out, will let you know how it holds up from tumbling to shooting. BigK
  17. I used the SailorCurt when it came to removing/installing the slide stop spring. Not sure I'd have gotten the darn thing back together so easily without his awesome turorials. I didn't even look at his mag release step until now. His method of lightening the spring is much better than cutting off coils. In fact, I'd say it's a pretty brilliant idea in its simplicity. Since I just started reloading 9X18 ammo, I anticipate shooting my 82 a lot more than ever. I'm definitely gonna lighten that mag release spring this weekend to save me some wear/tear on the mag release button.
  18. I've heard this rationale before and experienced the 'no look' lane change more than once back when I had a bike. Now that I drive a nice comfy car around, I can't help but notice that I can only hear even the loudest bike when it's beside me or in front of me. I don't hear them when they are in my blind spot.
  19. I assume it's for the same reason people put whale tails on a Dodge Neon or those tin can mufflers on their Nissan Sentra or crank their radio up until their tail light covers are rattling. They want some attention.
  20. Kind of funny... My MVZK (most valuable zombie killer) is...
  21. From the sound of things the Estep got ugly and the cops felt threatened. Seems the investigators agreed. Telling his side of the story to the press early and the hell that it raised may have been all that kept Estep from being arrested. But then again, nobody but the 3 of them know for sure.

    Naming your gun

Maybe you should call it Christine...when she's not listening of course.

    Naming your gun

I've got some pretty close friends that I like a lot...they have names. I've got a couple of guns I love quite a lot...they have no names. I never even considered it until now.
  24. I love those guys on Best Defense. In all their scenarios they always at least show 1) worst case, 2) better case, 3) best case scenarios. The best case is almost always a way to avoid the situation or avoid anyone getting killed.
  25. That was so funny! He was pulling that trigger so hard that he was shaking like a epileptic Eskimo (trying to trump Caster's "weakest chink" comment for most politically incorrect comment of the day). I can't stand the big oaf! Wish he hadn't won.
