Victim decides NOT to shoot attacker!
BigK replied to walton6467's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I hope this isn't the only time I hear about this story, but I doubt it. His life may not have been in jeopardy from a pellet gun, but getting your eye shot out or a major artery in the neck by a pellet gun would be a severe injury. Like Caster said, gun owners could use some good publicity right now. So, I hope CNN picks up this story to show there are gun owners out there who aren't blood thirsty psychos. -
Shot my very first IDPA match in Manchester today!
BigK replied to musicman's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I see you're in Smyrna. I'm just down the road in La Vergne. I'm curious, how long did it take to drive out there? I miss shooting IDPA and miss the friends I made there too, but I don't miss the 2 hour drive to Dickson. -
The brand is Tactical Solutions. You can get one pretty cheap on MicwayUSA (Ruger II front sights). The one I got is the .445" one, since it matched the height of the original. I must have just gotten in under the wire, because they are backordered (just 2 weeks, though) right now and the price just went up by $3 from $16.49 to $19.49. Still, it's worth the price and the wait to get rid of the original.

My 1st guess would have been a .380, but the new micro nines have almost made them obsolete. I'm betting on/hoping for some kind of carbine too. One that takes their standard mags. Unfortunately, it'll come with a huge boxy trigger guard, crappy plastic sights, and be as wide as an M-60.

My new fiber optic front sight for my Ruger Mark II came in yesterday!! I installed it with blue LocTite this morning and can't wait to take it to the range. It's exactly the same height as the original, doesn't have that odd hook the original had, and picks up light well, despite what the last couple of photos seem to indicate. My favorite thing about it is how narrow it is. I like to see lots of light between the insides of the rear sight and the outside edges of my front sight and this thing definitely delivers that! Although the light isn't perfect to see it here, I can tell this will be a superior sight for zombie killing... side note: it is hard to take an over the shoulder pic even with someone else taking the pic

Permit holder looses gun in theatre. Found by children
BigK replied to c.a.willard's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'm NOT sorry to hear that the gun owner's carry permit has been revoked, even for what was possibly a momentary error. Giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, this could be the only mistake he's ever made while carrying a firearm, but it was a big one. I'd like to think I could NEVER make such a grievous mistake, because I'm a way more responsible permit holder than this guy. However, I've locked myself out of my car before and left my wallet at home before and forgot where I parked at the mall before and worse things that I'd like to think I'm responsible enough not to do. But, it only takes one mistake with a firearm and this could have been a deadly mistake. -
What do pocket holsters do you use?
BigK replied to Jon in TN's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I had a Blackhawk pocket holster first and it worked out fine until I tried the DeSantis Nemesis. I'd consider the DeSantis an upgrade, personally. I used one with a Ruger SP101 until I traded it. I still have one for my P-32, but retired it in favor of the homemade one below. -

CZ75 D spring replacement reccomendations / help
BigK replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
That's excellent news from David. Glad he positively confirmed what I'd have guessed about the 11.5# spring in a compact. Just curious, what CZ model do you have? -
I've taken 4 classes after my HCP class. One was a 3 day course that really made me fall in love with training in general. It also taught me how to practice, so my range time is fun and of value. The other 3 classes were the same Advanced Handgun class repeated. I like to take it every 6 months to a year to stay fresh.

CZ75 D spring replacement reccomendations / help
BigK replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Glad to hear the difference was noticable, congrats. I'd bet money it has a positive affect on accuracy. Good call using the 13# spring. I tried the lighter spring in my CZ SP-01 and even with the extended firing pin, I got light primer strikes. I had to switch to Federal primers for reloading, because they have softer cups. That's not practical for self-defense, since reliability is so crucial. Hang onto that 11.5# spring, though. If you ever decide to get a compact CZ model, that spring will work fine. The shorter grip compresses the hammer spring enough that it will consistently set off primers even though it may not do so in a full-size. -
CZ75 D spring replacement reccomendations / help
BigK replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
i cant wait to hear about it. I've heard a lot of good things about that outfit. The owner, David, is always helping folks out over at the CZ forum (czfirearms.us). He has so much cool stuff I want for my P-01 I don't know where to start. -
I tried beam scales, admittedly not an expensive set up. It wasn't for me. Digital is the way to go for me. They're quicker and plenty accurate enough. I use a Frankford Arsenal digital scale that I caught on sale on MidwayUSA for $25. Hasn't failed me yet. I considered upgrading to a nice scale like the one Berry's sells, but I can't justify the cost. I'm not reloading match grade long distance ammo. For what I'm doing being off by 0.05 gr or even 0.10 gr isn't gonna be the end of the world.

Ron, Like others have already said, I respect you for making the decision to get a gun for the right reasons instead of panic. It makes for a much more intelligent/informed buying experience. You'll get a lot more honest answers here than at most of the gun stores I've seen. They offer advice too, but the gun store employee opinions seem more rooted in personal preference to me. For instance, they want to sell you a gun, so you probably won't hear them suggest going to a range where you can rent and shoot several guns before deciding. I can't offer specific advice on your XD vs XDm dilema, b/c those 2 don't fit my hand well, so I never owned one. I've shot a few, but not enough to offer informed advice. What I would suggest is that compacts in general take considerable more skill to be accurate with than a full size gun. They conceal easier, but there are holsters that can mitigate that advantage to some degree. One final point, is prices. Sometimes they indicate quality, but often they indicate popularity moreso. Buying a Taurus as a first gun is a smart choice if price is important. Spending more for a Springfield to get better quality or more features is smart too. Many of us buy/sell/trade multiple times until we find the brand/style/size we like the best. The important part is learning good shooting fundamentals, that will transfer to whatever gun you go with. Good luck, bro.

Do you allow your kids to arm themselves when home alone?
BigK replied to Links2k's topic in General Chat
I took the hunter safety course when I was around 11, but had already been hunting with dad for years. I had 2 shotguns of my own and by the time I was 12 or so, I carried one to granny and grandpa every other weekend to squirrel and rabbit hunt. By the time I was 14 or 15, my granny was so sick of squirrel, groundhog, rabbit, quail, and the like that she made the 'you killed, you cook it rule' and stuck to it. Mine hung in my room on a wooden gun rack and there was at least a partial box of shells for each in my dresser. When I got my first tube fed pump action .22, I thought the world was mine and no critter worth eating would safe from my wrath. Suffice it to say, my kids grew up around guns. Both know where the shotgun is, know that it's loaded, and know how to use it .... well. My oldest is 19 and in the Marines now and my youngest is 16. She knows her way around every gun I own, knows not to talk about them to friends, and knows the safety rules. I'd never forgive myself if I left her home alone with no way to protect herself. -
CZ75 D spring replacement reccomendations / help
BigK replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Awesome advice! I change out my factory mainspring in my P-01 for a 13# spring and the trigger pull is considerably lighter. Since I have a decocker, I'm wary about changing hammers (more complicated inside), but the 3 CZs I've had with competition hammers are amazing to shoot. -
Advice on a holster CZ75 D PCR
BigK replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Like CZ9MM was saying, what fits a CZ 75 Compact will fit your PCR, but holsters that fit a P-01 may result in a loose fit. I've noticed that not one single holster I own for my 75 Shadow will fit my P-01, but all my P-01 holsters (open bottom) will fit my Shadow. They'll just be a little loose. So, it's not the length/height, it's that wide dust cover on the P-01. -
Advice on a holster CZ75 D PCR

I'd recommend this thread (http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=33924.0) the guys over there are pretty knowledgeable about CZs and have lots of experience. -
If I were only as accurate at my job as these reporters have been, I'd have been fired.

I didn't know what time we all die tomorrow, so I made sure I got my last 2 slices of pepperoni pizza from Joey's House of Pizza today at lunch.I even sprung for onions on it too this time, can't be stingy with the world ending and all.

Judging from the stock levels I'm seeing, I screwed up by not buying an AR at the gun show when I had a chance last weekend. I'd bet money it's heavy traffic instead of DofS attacks.

Specialty Arms has been charging $50 transfer fees for a long time. I get the impression that they just don't want much transfer business.
