  1. I have a friend that bought a couple of the bucket-type filters. I haven't asked him yet how well he likes them. I've been considering becoming a small distributor for the company that makes the filters mentioned in the first post. Most likely selling only locally. They also make water bottle filters and backpack filters for portability. I think I'll start another thread to gauge interest before i spend any capital, though. Will
  2. As already stated, most people just don't notice. I saw someone OC'ing at Sam's a few months ago. I mentioned it to my wife, who also carries sometimes, and she had no clue. We even passed the fellow several times. I've seen a couple people carrying where I'm working. No one even raised an eyebrow if they noticed. Will
  3. I've only been pulled over twice since I've had a handgun carry permit. Neither time did I present it or announce that I had a firearm in the vehicle. Neither time did the officer ask if I had any firearms or other weapons in the vehicle. If asked, I would have responded truthfully. But I really don't understand the compulsion to tell a perfect stranger that I am carrying. I present less danger to them than they do to me. And in this state I am not legally required to inform them. So DADT. And please don't give me "they put their lives on the line". They are in their CHOSEN profession. By choice. I've worked a risky job as well (wildland firefighter) but I've never asked for special privileges over the rights of others because of it. Will
  4. This is all true. I've built several "basement builds". The only things that separate basement builds from a high-end manufacturer AR are parts selection and a basic grasp of the proper procedures. Not difficult at all.
  5. True. I have put plenty of time and money into making my Mini-30 a relatively decent shooter. Shortened the barrel to 16" and added a folding stock to make it a compact "traveling" gun. I sent the barreled action off to be cryo-treated. It shoots pretty well now. But if my firing pin breaks because I'm shooting steel-cased Russian ammo, I have to send it to Ruger. And I have no idea what mods that they will undo. I really like my Minis. But I'm still partial to my ARs. For the reasons I listed above. Will
  6. I can think of several advantages. Cheaper reliable magazines. Better accuracy. Better ergonomics (that one's subjective, of course). Easier (and cheaper) parts replacement. Modularity. Better sights. Easier to mount optics..... All at a similar price. I own both, BTW. Really, the AR is less complicated than the Mini. I can tear down an AR much easier than a Mini. And I've broken them both down to individual parts multiple times. Will
  7. I've been wondering when Merle would show back up, too. And what about the black guy and his kid from the first couple episodes? Wonder if they made it. They just kinda left that hanging as well. I was looking forward to his character coming back on-scene. Especially if his character on this show is anything like he was in "Jericho". Loved that guy. In a straight way, of course.
  8. I agree that this state doesn't yet respect our Constitutional rights as it should. BUT... I have bought several firearms legally without the permission of the state or paying a $10 tax. Can't do that in NY. And as far as I know, firearm possession isn't a crime, just carrying them. I could be wrong. If I am, please cite the specific code that makes it a crime to possess a firearm without the state's permission. Not saying things are as they should be, but I want to be clear about how they actually ARE. Thanks, Will
  9. This is the one I use for mass bullet-pulling. It's on sale, too. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/851547/hornady-cam-lock-bullet-puller If you only need to pull one or two, the hammer type is more convenient. But for several dozen the collet type is well worth the money. You'll have to add the correct size collet. Will
  10. But what about the wolves and mountain lions? jk, Will
  11. Thanks for that link. I think I'm going to assemble a 7.62x40 Wilson Tactical and I was trying to figure out a way to trim cases efficiently. Will
  12. Upgraded polymer? Makes me wish I had held off buying the PC. I didn't know about the New Frontier. Will
  13. When I was much, much younger, I would have similar nightmares. Except, in mine, I couldn't get the gun to fire. I would squeeze as hard as I could and if it did eventually fire, it would be like a pipsqueak squib round. As I got older and more confident in my abilities, the nightmares went away. I'm not commenting on your skills, but I believe that the shrinks are probably right. Go to the range, practice hard and the nightmares will go away. Will
  14. Are you using a mobile browser? I've had the same problem when I tried to post with my iPhone. No indentation or paragraph separation. I go back to the PC and it's ok. Will
  15. I've heard the same thing as well. And they basically say that on the front page of their website. http://www.pcfmfg.com/ I guess they didn't really consider gov or law enforcement contracts when they came up with the name. I read somewhere (hearsay) that their goal was to get an AR-style rifle in every law-abiding hand in the country, hence the low price. Makes sense that they would go with an eye-catching name rather than something more professional initially. So, if PCF is not the actual manufacturer, what manufacturer actually makes the New Frontier and the Plum Crazy? Will
  16. HA! According to the comments, they used the lid off a Quiznos salad so they could see the operation. Worked out brilliantly. Will
  17. Looking at those pics and looking at my Plum Crazy at the same time... they look exactly the same. Internal dimensions, external dimensions, internal parts. Even the square outlining the logo on the right side of the magwell is the same size and position. The only difference I can find is the name molded inside the square. I have a feeling that they are made by the same manufacturer and have different names stamped (molded) on them. Much like regular AL lowers. Oh, the PC has steel hammer and trigger pins. The takedown and pivot pin are polymer. The PC did cost me a few more dollars, I think. But not much. Will
  18. I would not report someone for doing something that shouldn't be illegal anyway. Besides, as I've read on this forum many times, it's illegal for any of us to carry a loaded handgun. The permit is simply a defense. As far as a gun-owning leftist changing his mind and voting for his gun rights, I wouldn't count on it. They're deluded to the point that they don't believe that even BO wants to restrict our rights. Never mind Fast and Furious, the UN Small Arms Treaty or whatever else will come out of Washington if The One gets re-elected.
  19. As far as the choice of weapons in the book, they had to choose a handgun that would fit more hands, including women's smaller hands. The 1911 is better in that regard. I remember reading the shareware version online in the mid-90s, I think. Probably was written even earlier. The Glock wasn't as popular then as it is now. Concerning parts availability, I don't think I've ever bought a 1911 part that didn't need hand fitting. Not so with the Glock. I would choose the Glock because of rust resistance, availability of parts right now and capacity. I carried a stainless 1911 for years that would routinely get rust spots from being against my sweaty self. The HK 91 still makes no sense to me. A hard-kicking (from what I've heard), recoil operated rifle that destroys valuable brass? I'll take an M14/M1A, thank you. Will
  20. When I went in and bought my hot chocolate and coffee cake this afternoon, I asked the young (and cute, btw) lady if they had been less busy than usual. She said "No, I wish!", So I assume that we made up for, or surpassed, any loss from a "boycott". This was in Bearden in Knoxville. I hadn't really expected for an anti-gun boycott to have an impact in this area, anyway. Will
  21. AKA an M-38.
  22. That's not bad. But if you want some inexpensive help with technique try to make it to an Appleseed class. http://appleseedinfo.org/ No shooting from benches or off bipods. Slings only. I recommend using iron sights until you are very good with them. You'd be surprised how well you can shoot with irons out to 400-500 yards. Then when you add an optic, you'll feel like you're cheating. You have to be able to shoot 4 MOA from prone to get a Rifleman patch. And many people do it with open sights. They have had classes in Kingsport, but I don't see any scheduled right now. But it's worth a few hours drive if you can afford it. Most shooting is done at 25 yards, but try to make it to one where there is a full-length range. That's where you can really test the technique that they teach. Not saying that your shooting wasn't good, but we can all improve. I've been to 4 Appleseeds and have improved immensely. Will
  23. The people who would go to a place like that are not what I would consider "down on their luck". They, most likely, have consistently made poor choices and are making another one by stepping through the door of a loan shark company. I work with a company who coaches people who are in debt or have other financial troubles (usually debt, though). By the time they come to us, they have finally come to the realization that their habits must change if they ever want to be out of slavery. And make no mistake about it, DEBT IS SLAVERY. I've BTDT and I'm still working my own way out of it. But I AM working my way out. I don't remember this forum's policy about plugging a non gun-related business, so I won't post our company's website. But on it are testimonials of people who I have watched go from hopelessness and losing sleep at night to having a sense of hope simply by having a plan to deal with their financial troubles. There are not many better feelings, at least for me, than knowing that you've helped someone to that degree. And that's why I'll keep doing it. Yes, these loan co's are unscrupulous low-lifes that prey on people who make bad choices. I hope the best for the people who need help, but if they would rather take out a loan at 117% (!) than come to me or someone else who can help them build self-discipline and teach them how to deal with their situation, they will only dig themselves deeper. Will
  24. This is not perfectly analogous, but Argentina was a developed country. Firearms were more controlled, but still available. And the economy collapsed because their politicians were doing the same things that ours are doing now. It's a blog, so you'll have to go to the last page for the first entry. I believe that I found the very first page of blog entries. The archive is listed on the left side if you scroll down a bit. You can also find a link for "Post Economic Collapse Stories". http://ferfal.blogsp...&max-results=50 Will
  25. Exactly. As stated in this thread, even EMS will wait until a LEO arrives to secure the scene. I've seen this firsthand. My Dad accidentally shot himself in the leg a couple years ago. As I was speeding home to try to help him, I passed the ambulance parked in my Grandmother's driveway, about a quarter mile away. I stopped to ask if they couldn't find the address. They told me that it was policy that they couldn't arrive on scene to a gunshot wound until law enforcement had secured the scene. It infuriated me at the time, though I understand the reason behind the policy. Will
