  1. Interesting. I wonder if it works sort of like a torpedo. I think I remember reading somewhere that they expel an air bubble out of the nose so that they aren't pushing through water. Kind of like keeping a layer of air over the nose as it cuts through the water. Just something I read a long time ago. I hope someone else will explain better.
  2. Don't know what kind of rifle it was, but I think I would have rather used that crossbow to take out the guy carrying it rather than a crude pistol. But, of course, firearms are ALWAYS more deadly than bows and arrows.
  3. I do seem to be more easily entertained than most. Gotta go watch some potatoes boil...
  4. I looked, but apparently no one has commented on the show yet. It's on NBC right now. Second episode. Background is, it's set 15 years in the future after all electrical items have ceased to function. Has flashbacks to present time occasionally. SPOILER ALERT............ So far, it's reasonably entertaining. I have some problems with the premise, though. -It's supposedly 15 years from now (or thereabouts). The most popular rifle in the US right now is the AR-style rifle. But apparently 15 years from now, most of what is left are Civil War era weapons. -Militia (characterized as the bad guys/new government) have sprung up and are terrorizing the citizens. As if there aren't enough good guys with guns to prevent that sort of douchebaggery. -Firearms are illegal for anyone except loyal militia. See last point. -I REALLY have a problem with them calling the tyrannical government soldiers "militia". Militia, by definition, are citizen soldiers. Hardly the type to suppress the populace. I'll keep watching for now. I'm surprised I didn't see anyone else post about the new show. I apologize if someone did and I missed it. Will
  5. Any idea what the entrance fee will be? Will
  6. I have a "sporterized" '91 Argy carbine. They are nice light handy little rifles. I don't shoot mine anymore. I'm just too paranoid. Haven't had any issues, but they do not have the safety features of the '98 Mausers like the safety lug and the gas "escape port". So if the lugs let go, it's a bad day. I knew a fellow who had a modern bolt rifle blow up on him. Nearly killed him. Sent the bolt through his face. But I'm digressing... I have only shot underpowered loads in mine. I made my brass from .30-06 cases. Unlike Jonnin, some of my cases only lasted a few loads before the necks cracked. May have been a different brand of brass. I think that if I had re-annealed them, they wouldn't have cracked. I don't intend to discourage you from shooting it or hunting with it, just remember that it's probably 100+ years old. As stated, making cases is tedious. So if you can get some factory rounds, that's probably the best way to go. Will
  7. You really can't argue with math.
  8. From what I have read on this forum, the officer's job and his commission is a defense to carrying a firearm just the same as my having a HCP is. So then, what is to stop me from making a citizen's arrest? Or calling a federal LE to arrest him and have him present his defense in court? Absurd, right? So it is just as absurd that he could do the same to a citizen. This absurdity needs to end. It really wouldn't be that complicated to change. Going through the law striking this, adding that, blah, blah, legalese can be done in one single bill. Or, as JayC said above simply changing the word "defense" to "exception" would work. If one want to really make it complicated, make the new law contingent on and effective as of the date of the repeal of the old law. This happens all the time. Ultimately, the best solution is Constitutional carry. I don't need a Permit to act as a defense to an act which is a RIGHT. And make no mistake, it is a RIGHT, no matter what state, local or federal law says. Bearing arms is a right in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles as much as it is in Arizona, Vermont and Alaska. Just because a government infringes on a right makes it no less a right. Will
  9. That's for the illiterates who don't know that a magazine isn't what you glance at in the check-out line at the supermarket. So they add the "clip" for their benefit. I've seen "clip magazine" elsewhere too. It's just a magazine. Congrats on the rifle. A Marlin Model 60 was my first self-loading .22 rifle when I was a wee lad. I like Marlins.
  10. Don't worry about the ejection port cover and forward assist. The cover is nice to have, but rarely necessary. And I only know of ONE situation where I would use the forward assist and if you don't form brass, you won't need it for that reason. I left those parts off the last upper I screwed together. I haven't used the S&W, but I really like the features that Dolomite says it comes with. It's the one I recommend (based on Dolomite's recommendation) to folks who don't want to build their own. As a matter of fact, it would be difficult to build a rifle with those specs for the same price as the S&W. Will
  11. How are alligators different than zombies right now? Wandering around listlessly until they see something to eat.
  12. Thanks, Dave.
  13. That makes sense that it's off by a percentage rather than a hard number. So if I'm off by 3mph at 50, then... well... I'll do the math later... Yours is easy. 10%
  14. Just checked my speedometer against my GPS. I'm 3mph faster than I'm registering. So now I know... I'm due for some new tires, so I won't bother recalibrating. Just get some factory size tires when I do. Unless I find another good deal that fits my rims. Will
  15. He said that it was the law and then told me why it was a good idea. Like I said, had I realized it was in view, I would have told him right away anyway. Just to be courteous.
  16. If you are interested in researching the racist roots of gun control, you may want to check out JPFO.org. They have made several documentaries concerning this very issue. http://jpfo.org/filegen-a-m/movies.htm Thanks for what you are trying to do. It's good to see more and more people taking our rights and the suppression of them seriously.
  17. Yes, the law changed a couple years ago. I don't remember when, exactly. But now the park service observes the law of the state which it's in. Even back then, had you not been driving like a maniac, most Rangers I knew at the time would probably have just given you a warning and made you unload the weapons.
  18. Very, very sorry to hear about your son's eyesight. But, maybe I can reassure you. I was born mostly blind in my right eye. Enough so that it "wanders" if I'm not paying attention. I can see peripherally somewhat, but I don't use it for forward vision. Your doctor is correct. He will have very little difficulty. I have a bit more difficulty catching something thrown toward me because of lack of depth perception. But if you train him while he's young (playing catch, etc.) as my Dad did, it will help immensely. Watching a 3D movie does nothing for me. But in real life, I can "sense" depth. Sometimes, I will unconsciously move my head side to side slightly to get a sense of depth. Not so much now as I used to. I'm 39 years old, BTW. I am not super accurate when it comes to judging distance. But I'm not much worse than most folks with 2 good eyeballs. Advantages? I have absolutely no way of knowing if these are a result of being blind in one eye and compensating with the other, but... - Straight lines. For example, I can build a fence as straight as an arrow. I can detect an almost imperceptible "crookedness" in something. Gun barrels, for example. - Last time I was checked, I have 20/15 vision in my good eye. I can read signs farther away than others. - I am a naturally good shot. Formal training helped even more, though. Some suggestions. Obviously, protect his good eye at all costs. Don't let him do stupid things like trying to see how a stapler works by looking at the staples while squeezing the lever. Ask me how I know. Don't let him sock himself in the eye by pulling something, such as a wrench, toward his face while loosening a bolt. Ask me how I know. Don't let him shoot a BB gun at anything close while not wearing eye protection. Ask me how I know. As you may have guessed, I am very lucky to still have one good eye. Teach him from the beginning to shoot left-handed. My family tried to get me to shoot right-handed when I was little. I couldn't see the sights. Duh. Now, shooting a long gun lefty is perfectly natural for me because I've been doing it since soon after I could walk. Teach him to wear eye protection almost all the time. I do. Good (read: not cheap) sunglasses during the day. Clear lenses at night if doing anything more risky than watching TV. I know how it must be to know your son will only have one good eye while growing up. I remember my Mother telling me that my Papaw said the same thing about me. He would have given up both his if I could have two good eyes. But, it really isn't a tragedy as long as he doesn't lose the good one. And how would my Papaw (and you, with your son) have taken me hunting, fishing and everything else if he had been blind? I wouldn't trade those memories for another good eye. My wife is expecting our first child right now. Gonna be a boy. I've been praying that he has two eyes that are as good as my one. That he has our brains, her intuition, her good looks, my strength, my protectiveness, my introversion, her extroversion (yeah, I know). And her Uncle's height. That's all I can think of right now as late as it is. Please feel free to let me know if I can help with any other questions or concerns. Will
  19. I used to get that "foreboding" feeling sometimes. I've always been a pessimistic type, but as I got older, I've started to see things a bit more clearly. I guess my senses have been "honed" so to say. So I don't get that foreboding sense very much anymore. At least until recently.
  20. Do the Shriners ever have shows anymore? I remember attending theirs at the temple and the SMGC at the old Convention Center back in the '90s. Good memories.
  21. Yeah, he didn't even ask for my HCP. He saw it as I was taking out my DL. It wasn't an issue, but I like to know that the ones who are charged with enforcing the law are actually aware of what that law says. I answer questions truthfully. He also asked if I had any other firearms in the car. I thought for a second before answering "no". He commented on my hesitation, but I wanted to be sure just in case they thought they had PC to search. Had he asked on a different day, I may have had several others. Today I didn't. Also asked about some antihistamines in a blister pack in the glove box that I didn't remember were there. To be quite honest, I sensed a "fishing expedition" in progress. Fortunately for me, I was too small and got thrown back in. I drive a 13-year old truck with hail damage. I was filthy from mowing all day and the bed was full of random stuff related to work I've been doing. I probably looked like a ruffian, so he may have thought there was some potential excitement for the night. Happy to disappoint. Yes, I'll get the license plate fixed, take current proof of insurance to court and make sure my speedometer is right. I have tires that are a bit bigger than factory, so it's possible my speedometer may be off. Probably not by 6 mph, though. Thanks all, Will
  22. After being on this site for a good while and actually reading the law (at some point), I was pretty sure that the law does not require me to disclose if I have a firearm upon contact with a LEO. Unless something changed in the last few weeks, I'm still pretty sure I'm right. I got pulled over by the Alcoa PD about an hour ago. I passed an officer while I was going, according to MY speedometer, 50 mph, which is the speed limit. He flashes me and I pull over. He says I was going 56. Believe me, I don't do 56 on Alcoa Hwy even when I'm NOT passing a marked car. But whatever.... He said that the other reason was that my tag wasn't on file. My "B" was scratched and looked like a "D". Fine. That was my fault. I THOUGHT that my Glock was concealed under some clothes on the passenger seat. I had been mowing all day, or it would have been under my shirt on my belt. As it was it was in the fanny pack that I use while I'm mowing, unzipped. His partner saw it and told him. He told me to keep my hands on the wheel while his partner got the Glock out of the seat. Fine and dandy. I understand. As I signed the citation for not showing proof of insurance (I had an old card which was expired), he informed me that in this state that it was the law that I must inform an officer that I am carrying. I didn't argue, just apologized. But I may follow up with a call or visit to the PD to let them know that their officers should be aware of the law. As far as the contact, the officers were very polite and professional. They even went so far as to say that they are pro-Second Amendment (which I appreciate), but gave me a mini lecture about disclosing. Actually, had I realized the gun was visible, I would have given him my HCP along with my DL. He saw it anyway, but still. The other officer put the pistol back in my truck and told me it's condition. Like I said, professional. But misinformed. Not intending to start a debate about disclosing versus not. More so about what the law says versus what it does not. Also, I probably just wanted to vent a little, I guess. I can count on one hand the times I've been pulled over in my life, so I'm not happy about it. I'm going to test my speedometer to make sure it's not reading slow. Will
  23. Nothing wrong with the Rugers. But I think the Model 65 or 66 with a 4" bbl is just about the perfect size for the .357 round. I picked up a used 65 many years ago at a really good price. I don't really know how expensive or hard to find they are now. I bet you can still find a deal on one, though. Will
  24. I saw a beautiful specimen at Stars and Stripes Shooting Sports in Maryville a few weeks ago. I don't know if it had been refinished, but I THINK he said it was an original piece made after WWII. It made me drool, but I can't buy anything right now. It wasn't too bad a price for the condition. If I had the disposable cash, it would be mine. Will
