  1. This. Don't order a stuck case kit from Midway when you can drive to Lowe's or Home Depot and get what you need the same day for less cash. I've had to do it for myself and another time for a friend who was about to send his die back to the manufacturer. Will
  2. It was fairly uncrowded this morning when I got there before church let out. I was mainly looking for a specific AR part. Didn't find it, but had the fortune to run into Dolomite and he gave me a good lead on where to get it. Ended up with a 3.5 lb Glock trigger connector and some beef jerky. Installed the connector tonight. I'm bound and determined to make this Glock work for me. Will
  3. I really appreciate that. I'm trying to raise enough extra funds so that both of us can attend. I'd like to be there to learn as well as help her. But if only one of us can attend, I'd rather it be her. I really do appreciate it. Will
  4. I don't disagree with what you are saying. But the same untraceable lower can be had by buying face-to-face from a private seller. Heck, there are even people making their lowers on 3D printers. I finished an 80% lower several years ago. Worked out pretty well. No, it wasn't any cheaper and was considerably more work than buying a finished lower, but I'm a tinkerer and I wanted to do it. Will
  5. Where do you get your 80% lowers? Will
  6. That's it!! Thank you! Steve McQueen popped in my head, but I wasn't sure.
  7. I was thinking about the same thing this morning. The Volcanic and the Mare's Leg. I don't know the history of the Mare's Leg, but I know the concept isn't new. I remember an old western movie that had one in it. Can't think of the name right now. I don't know if they actually existed in the "Old West" or not, though. While the 6-shot Rossi is more awkward than a 6-shot revolver, I like the idea of a 10 inch barrel handgun for the extra velocity. Not that I'll buy one anytime soon. If the Rossi version holds 6 rounds of .44 Mag, I wonder how many rounds of .44 Special or .44 Russian it will hold.
  8. An alternate way to shoot an AR-style pistol is to use a one or two point sling and pull forward to stabilize it. That may work just as well with the Rossi as well as making it possible to work the lever without lowering it and losing sight picture. I don't know, but it may be worth a try. Will
  9. Article about on-set of TWD. http://www.knoxville.com/news/2012/oct/12/terry-morrow-inside-the-making-of-the-walking/ And one about the 3rd season. http://www.knoxville.com/news/2012/oct/12/terry-morrow-walking-dead-retains-excellence-in/ Terry Morrow must be a big fan.
  10. I knew that I shouldn't mention "AK". My main point, besides stirring up discussion, was that going "bang" every time is not the sole criteria on which I base my gun of choice for self-defense. That's just me. And JAB is absolutely right. If the gun doesn't fire, there is no chance of hitting the target. What I choose is what I know will run right pretty much all the time, even with an occasional hiccup, but what I am absolutely sure will but a round on target at the distance for which it's intended. But since I made the mistake of mentioning the Kalashnikov, I'll get specific. I realize, as Dolomite says, that perceived inaccuracy is caused by bad ammo, mechanically. There is also the issue of inferior sights, poor ergonomics (for me) and weight (the user-friendliness that I mentioned before). BTW, I have a MAK-90, supposedly one of the better ones. It jammed right out of the box. It took some time with a Dremel on the trunnion(?) before it would feed a single round. I know that this isn't common, but it happened. Conversely, the only malfunction I've had that wasn't ammo related with an AR was after shooting it dry for several hundred rounds. Cleaned and lubed it and all was well. Better sights, lighter, more ergonomic, longer range round. While I hope I don't have to engage Zombies at 600 yards, it's nice to know that I have a rifle that is capable of it. I carry a Glock 31. I have little doubt that it will never jam. And it should be plenty accurate (as long as I stay away from Winchester White Box). But it just doesn't fit my hand well. And I really don't like the trigger. I can probably live with the trigger if I install a 3.5 pound connector. I may look at having the grip reshaped because I just really like it otherwise. But if I can't get it to "fit", I'll have to go to something else. I carried a 1911 for years before I switched to the Glock. It did jam on rare occasion, but I had no trouble hitting a target with it, even with a short barrel. Believe me, I had no intention of this being an AK vs AR debate. I've already made my choice. Just slaying some sacred cows, while using as many platitudes as I can think of. Will
  11. I have a whole long list of gun-related (and non-gun as well) peeves. Here is one of them. "I'll take an AK to TEOTWAWKI because it goes 'bang' every time I pull the trigger. You could run over it with a tank and it'll still work. Fill it with wet cement, let it cure and all you need to do is kick the bolt loose and it'll still go bang." Now, don't get me wrong. I value reliability in a firearm. Especially one that I may have to use to defend my life. But if the MOST important thing is that it goes "bang", then I'll carry a pack of firecrackers and a lighter. To me, the most important thing is that my rounds hit their target. I'm not referring to any specific firearms. Nor do I wish to offend anyone who may have said this very thing. I'm just lambasting one of the dogmatic phrases that pops up in any thread, in any forum, about self-defense tools. I'm going to "swim against the current" and say that I'll take a gun that is 99.5% reliable, but is accurate, user-friendly, and most easily puts bullets into my target. Will P.S. I actually just wanted to post my 250th post.
  12. Well, it was 100-something fps, but nowhere near 200 fps. I'll try to remember to check my notes when I can tomorrow. Regardless, I'm happy to have the 18 over the 28. With the Wolf ammo, you're more likely to get loose primer pockets before split necks. At least that was my experience with some older Wolf. LIke 1gewehr said above, Wolf is supposed to have some steel case coming out soon. Of course that has been the case for a couple years now. I'm not holding my breath, but I hope I'm pleasantly surprised. Will
  13. Bwa ha ha! But which one is a cunning linguist?
  14. 6.5 Grendel. I haven't gotten to play with it enough to get the cast loads working right, but I know it can be done. There is a fellow up in the Johnson City area who has gotten some cast loads working through his AR. It's starting to come back to me now. I did cast some .264 bullets with a Saeco mold. This one. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/109015/saeco-2-cavity-bullet-mold-264-65mm-264-diameter-140-grain-spitzer-point-gas-check Sized to .266", though I don't remember what the cast diameter was. It may not have been any larger than that since that bullet is a "bore-rider". I've never dealt with those before. Only loaded some test rounds. They were a failure. Too fast a powder with too heavy a bullet. And there was too much leading. And probably several other problems. After that, I got busy with work and never got back to working on it. I really need to. That was the most expensive mold I've ever bought. Will
  15. I have a couple questions: First, will the class be appropriate for a woman who is approximately 7 months pregnant? I have been planning to take a trip to NV to go to Front Sight. Already have the classes paid for and everything, but it looks like we're not going to be able to make it before she has the baby. Second, is it allowable for a second person (me) to be there without participating in the class. There are a couple reasons. One, to keep her mags loaded. I want her to concentrate on learning to shoot better rather than on how much her fingers are hurting from loading mags. Two, to keep her mags loaded because I want her handling ammo as little as possible due to potential lead exposure. If that's not acceptable, I may be able to pay for both of us just so I can be there. Thanks, Will
  16. He he. Well, I would, but it's bolted too tightly to my bench Seriously, I'll probably fire it up again soon. When I cast some .264 and .30 cal boolits. According to my feeble memory, I size and lube my rifle bullets. Tumble my handgun bullets. Sheesh. I looked at my handloading log the other day and it had been just over a YEAR since I have even loaded a single round. I'm pathetic. Have loaded a few since then, though. Will
  17. 120 grain range bullets are pretty much the standard. Though you shouldn't have a problem with pretty much any standard bullet weight. The 120's will be be fine with that twist. By length, I assume you mean barrel length. Plenty of folks use a longer barrel to wring every last bit of velocity out of the Grendel. It depends on what you're going to use it for. If you want to hunt, 24" may be a bit heavy, depending on the profile. But if you're main interest is shooting paper, especially at longer ranges, a 24" barrel is well-suited. Personally, while most of my shooting is at paper (never from a bench though), I have an 18" barrel. When I get back to hunting, I'll want the lighter barrel. I originally bought a 28" barrel a few years ago when nothing else could be had (post-election panic) and cut it down to 18". I think I only lost about 100 fps velocity. Well worth it to me for a much handier barrel length. I built my wife an 18" and my brother a 16". Are you fireforming cases, or buying factory? Just curious. When I got into the Grendel, fireforming was the only way to get cases in a reasonable amount of time. Now brass is (or was) easily available. Have you been over on the Grendel forum? Plenty of good info and good people over there. http://www.65grendel.com/forum/ While I'm not the all-time Grendel expert, I'm certainly a Grendel Nut. So I'm happy to discuss all you want. Will
  18. This ^^^^^ Tumble lubing is the way to go. I have a Lyman Lubrisizer, but I haven't used it in a long time (of course, I also have cast much lately). I've only used Lee Liquid Alox, but I bet Caster or Dolomite might have a homemade recipe. Will
  19. I bought one of these recently. http://www.ebay.com/itm/300AAC-Blackout-7-62x40-Wilson-Tac-CTS-Case-Trimmer/271065682501?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=017&category=71114&cmd=ViewItem I haven't used it yet. I don't have my dies. It's set for 7.62x40 right now, but it can be used for the .300 AAC. It indexes off of the shoulder of the case, so if your case headspace is correct, it will trim to the right length.
  20. I've seen Fels-Naptha bar soap at several Krogers around here. Maybe even at Walmart, but I'm not sure about that. I've used tube toothpaste that was at least 15 years old. It gets harder to squeeze out of the tube, but still works fine. Will
  21. Interesting. I assume your store carries the book? Is the author local? I have heard of it before, but haven't read it. You work just a stone's throw from where I live (not literally, but close). Will
  22. If anyone is needing brass and doesn't want to form it. Here you go. http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/12652
  23. Update: Took my proof of insurance to Alcoa PD today. No charge for the citation. Cool. I also spoke to a shift supervisor about the duty to inform. He told me the same thing that the first officer did. Since I wasn't on the side of Alcoa Highway, I was politely insistent enough that he said he would look into it further. So just FYI, until Alcoa PD is up to speed, it may be expedient to show your HCP if pulled over in Alcoa. I will, as a courtesy, if it's in view or on my person. For now. Hornett22, I don't even know what to say.... that's just outrageous. Ok, I have read the TCA and I don't see how it can be construed as saying that I have to tell an officer I'm carrying. BUT, for those of you who are more familiar with the wording and/or are lawyers, is there ANYTHING in the law that can POSSIBLY be misconstrued that way? Just curious. Will
  24. Yes, see above. Eat right (REALLY right, not Lean Cuisine). Wash your hands. Keep your hands out of your face when you're out in public. And just in case, go see your PCP and get a scrip for Tamiflu. Because if you come down with the flu, it will be on a weekend when Dr. offices are closed and your only option will be the ER. I've never had a flu shot. I've had the flu maybe 3 or 4 times in my life, including early childhood. I'll sometimes come down with something that feels flu-like, but not nearly as severe. Someone above described it well. You'll feel like you're dying for several days. Unless you have Tamiflu. That stuff is a miracle drug. Since I've been eating better (whole foods, avoid sugar and grains), I haven't been sick except for what must have been food poisoning a few months ago. That was awful. No colds or flu for a couple years, knock on wood. Will
  25. Beartooth Bullets casts LBT designed bullets. LBT was the name that popped into my head when you said wide flat nose. I've never ordered from them nor cast LBT bullets, though I did lust after their molds back when I was casting regularly. http://beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm
