  1. I have said to a couple of my closest friends something very similar. Now I'll say it in a public forum. I won't predict what is stated in the article, but I will not be surprised if it comes to pass. He is just that narcissistic.
  2. Wasn't there a M1 Carbine conversion in .45 Win Mag or some such? 10mm shouldn't be much problem. Or even better, .400 Corbon. Will Edit: Yes, there must have been. Here's a barrel. http://www.ebay.com/itm/M1-Carbine-45-Winchester-Magnum-Conversion-Barrel-/130677954144
  3. When I was in my late teens/early 20's, I really wanted to develop a .40 or .41 caliber straight-walled round based on a necked-up .30-30. Sort of a scaled down .444 Marlin or .45-70. All it would require is a barrel change for a Marlin 336, I think. Then, of course, there is the cartridge, die and load development. I think it would be a flatter shooting round with similar "knock-down" to the .444 or .45-70. Of course, now that I'm a bit more experienced, I prefer bottleneck rounds for rifles. But if someone with the resources were to take that idea and run with it, I'd be really interested in the results. Will
  4. I got mine years ago. A Cold Steel Trailmaster Carbon V. And no, it's not my every day carry. Folders? I've been through a few. I've put my Cold Steel Pro Lite through its paces over the last 10 or so years. Aside from some finish wear, it's as solid as the day I got it. I'm thinking about moving to something else, but haven't decided what can replace it yet. And yes, it is my EDC.
  5. Interesting. I'd like to see Tennessee pass a similar law.
  6. Expect for that Snookie chick. Man, she is the HOTNESS. Am I right?..... Anybody?........
  7. I'm going to second the 6.5 Grendel. In an AR-style rifle, you can use an adjustable gas block (if it has one or you install one) to help tame felt recoil. The 6.5 or the 6.8 or .300 Blackout will be similar in the AR. The advantage to the 6.5 is a longer effective range if you ever decide to try longer range shooting. If you are really staying short range, I don't recommend any of the larger centerfire rounds (.243, 260, etc.) in a bolt action or single shot. While the recoil may be manageable, it will still be worse than an AR. And the muzzle blast will be significantly worse. .30-30 is a classic, but again, recoil will be heavier. 6.5/6.8/300 will beat the ballistics after a short distance, too. Due to poor ballistic coefficient of the .30-30 and better BC of the others (Especially the 6.5. Can you tell I'm biased toward the 6.5 Grendel?) I built my 5', 100 pound wife a lightweight AR in 6.5 G. Recoil is very mild even in the light rifle. And the muzzle blast is less daunting when you are practicing and less damaging when hunting. She hasn't hunted with it yet, unfortunately. Good luck, Will
  8. I just hope you're right. I have no suggestions other than the standard ones. Vote for the right people, educate others, etc. It appears to be working in some places, locally. My point was that the new laws can be ignored as easily as the "old" ones (like the Constitution). Those thugs going door to door in NO had to know that what they were doing was unConstitutional but they did it anyway. I believe that there will always be that element that just doesn't care what the rules are as long as they are in charge. Case in point, observe the actions of the current administration. I would rather that you be correct and I be wrong. I just don't have that confidence.
  9. It wasn't legal when it happened the first time. Where is the evidence that the new laws that were passed in response to this won't be ignored?
  10. A friend of mine killed one once. Had a scope mounted on top of an AR carry rail. He didn't compensate for the bore line being so far below the sight line and shot 2 or 3 rounds through it. So you're not the only one.
  11. USFS? TDF?
  12. Wow. Which one was this. I want to make sure that I never take my vehicle there for a tire change. Or anything else.
  13. Looks just like a Cold Steel Tanto. I have no idea who copied whom. I don't carry a knife with a personal story, but I have several. I wouldn't carry any of them on a regular basis because I wouldn't want to lose them. I have an old Boy Scout fixed blade that my Papaw found in the hills while he was hunting. He gave it to me when I was really young. I don't even remember him giving it to me. That's how little I was. He's been gone since I was 15 ( almost 24 years now. Wow). I have a Clod Steel Trailmaster that my Mother and Daddy bought me when I was in my teens. I lusted after that blade for a long time before they bought it for me. I probably have a few others that have sentimental value, but those are the first that pop in my head. I have a Cold Steel Pro Lite that I have carried for about 8 to 10 years now. After that much time, things tend to become sentimental to me, so it's about time to retire it and find something else before I lose it.
  14. This. Don't order a stuck case kit from Midway when you can drive to Lowe's or Home Depot and get what you need the same day for less cash. I've had to do it for myself and another time for a friend who was about to send his die back to the manufacturer. Will
  15. It was fairly uncrowded this morning when I got there before church let out. I was mainly looking for a specific AR part. Didn't find it, but had the fortune to run into Dolomite and he gave me a good lead on where to get it. Ended up with a 3.5 lb Glock trigger connector and some beef jerky. Installed the connector tonight. I'm bound and determined to make this Glock work for me. Will
  16. I really appreciate that. I'm trying to raise enough extra funds so that both of us can attend. I'd like to be there to learn as well as help her. But if only one of us can attend, I'd rather it be her. I really do appreciate it. Will
  17. I don't disagree with what you are saying. But the same untraceable lower can be had by buying face-to-face from a private seller. Heck, there are even people making their lowers on 3D printers. I finished an 80% lower several years ago. Worked out pretty well. No, it wasn't any cheaper and was considerably more work than buying a finished lower, but I'm a tinkerer and I wanted to do it. Will
  18. Where do you get your 80% lowers? Will
  19. That's it!! Thank you! Steve McQueen popped in my head, but I wasn't sure.
  20. I was thinking about the same thing this morning. The Volcanic and the Mare's Leg. I don't know the history of the Mare's Leg, but I know the concept isn't new. I remember an old western movie that had one in it. Can't think of the name right now. I don't know if they actually existed in the "Old West" or not, though. While the 6-shot Rossi is more awkward than a 6-shot revolver, I like the idea of a 10 inch barrel handgun for the extra velocity. Not that I'll buy one anytime soon. If the Rossi version holds 6 rounds of .44 Mag, I wonder how many rounds of .44 Special or .44 Russian it will hold.
  21. An alternate way to shoot an AR-style pistol is to use a one or two point sling and pull forward to stabilize it. That may work just as well with the Rossi as well as making it possible to work the lever without lowering it and losing sight picture. I don't know, but it may be worth a try. Will
  22. Article about on-set of TWD. http://www.knoxville.com/news/2012/oct/12/terry-morrow-inside-the-making-of-the-walking/ And one about the 3rd season. http://www.knoxville.com/news/2012/oct/12/terry-morrow-walking-dead-retains-excellence-in/ Terry Morrow must be a big fan.
  23. I knew that I shouldn't mention "AK". My main point, besides stirring up discussion, was that going "bang" every time is not the sole criteria on which I base my gun of choice for self-defense. That's just me. And JAB is absolutely right. If the gun doesn't fire, there is no chance of hitting the target. What I choose is what I know will run right pretty much all the time, even with an occasional hiccup, but what I am absolutely sure will but a round on target at the distance for which it's intended. But since I made the mistake of mentioning the Kalashnikov, I'll get specific. I realize, as Dolomite says, that perceived inaccuracy is caused by bad ammo, mechanically. There is also the issue of inferior sights, poor ergonomics (for me) and weight (the user-friendliness that I mentioned before). BTW, I have a MAK-90, supposedly one of the better ones. It jammed right out of the box. It took some time with a Dremel on the trunnion(?) before it would feed a single round. I know that this isn't common, but it happened. Conversely, the only malfunction I've had that wasn't ammo related with an AR was after shooting it dry for several hundred rounds. Cleaned and lubed it and all was well. Better sights, lighter, more ergonomic, longer range round. While I hope I don't have to engage Zombies at 600 yards, it's nice to know that I have a rifle that is capable of it. I carry a Glock 31. I have little doubt that it will never jam. And it should be plenty accurate (as long as I stay away from Winchester White Box). But it just doesn't fit my hand well. And I really don't like the trigger. I can probably live with the trigger if I install a 3.5 pound connector. I may look at having the grip reshaped because I just really like it otherwise. But if I can't get it to "fit", I'll have to go to something else. I carried a 1911 for years before I switched to the Glock. It did jam on rare occasion, but I had no trouble hitting a target with it, even with a short barrel. Believe me, I had no intention of this being an AK vs AR debate. I've already made my choice. Just slaying some sacred cows, while using as many platitudes as I can think of. Will
  24. I have a whole long list of gun-related (and non-gun as well) peeves. Here is one of them. "I'll take an AK to TEOTWAWKI because it goes 'bang' every time I pull the trigger. You could run over it with a tank and it'll still work. Fill it with wet cement, let it cure and all you need to do is kick the bolt loose and it'll still go bang." Now, don't get me wrong. I value reliability in a firearm. Especially one that I may have to use to defend my life. But if the MOST important thing is that it goes "bang", then I'll carry a pack of firecrackers and a lighter. To me, the most important thing is that my rounds hit their target. I'm not referring to any specific firearms. Nor do I wish to offend anyone who may have said this very thing. I'm just lambasting one of the dogmatic phrases that pops up in any thread, in any forum, about self-defense tools. I'm going to "swim against the current" and say that I'll take a gun that is 99.5% reliable, but is accurate, user-friendly, and most easily puts bullets into my target. Will P.S. I actually just wanted to post my 250th post.
  25. Well, it was 100-something fps, but nowhere near 200 fps. I'll try to remember to check my notes when I can tomorrow. Regardless, I'm happy to have the 18 over the 28. With the Wolf ammo, you're more likely to get loose primer pockets before split necks. At least that was my experience with some older Wolf. LIke 1gewehr said above, Wolf is supposed to have some steel case coming out soon. Of course that has been the case for a couple years now. I'm not holding my breath, but I hope I'm pleasantly surprised. Will
