  1. I have heard of some failures of different types, especially Plum Crazy.  But quite honestly, most of them appear to be due to abuse.  I hope as long as I don't use it as a baseball bat that it will hold up.  Like that picture above.  I just don't see that happening from just shooting.  Of course it's much less likely to happen to an AL receiver.  Everything's a trade-off.   :x:
  2. Well, that's a bit reassuring.  These will be mostly "get-home" guns anyway.  If they start to fail, I'll replace the lower body with an AL one.
  3.   Ooooo.  Care to share what exactly happened?  If you posted it before, I must have missed it.     I have two Plum Crazy lowers.  Light as air, but I don't want them to break.
  4. I have been using the internet since 1992.  I had email before most people knew it existed, or could access it.  (Remember that, back when it was called "e-mail"?)  Before the World Wide Web even existed (I think).     From the beginning, I started reading one of the first gun forums, rec.guns, on Usenet.  I posted occasionally, but not all that much.  Then came, AR15.com, which has become such a behemoth that I rarely check it anymore.   Probably the most I have ever posted on any other gun forum was on 65grendel.com.  But adding up all the posts I have ever made on any and all internet forums in the last 22 years, they would not add up to anywhere near the amount of bandwidth I have used on tngunowners.com.   So, congratulations to TGO for being more worthwhile to me than any other internet resource and thanks to TGO for the same thing.   Sincerely,   Will
  5. Yup, the lapping tool.   Also, anti-seize grease (or another high-quality grease) on the threads.  Plus another trick that gunsmiths use to seat threads:  After applying the grease, tighten, then loosen, then tighten, then loosen, then tighten one more time.  You'll be surprised how much further the nut (or barrel, or whatever) will go.
  6. Shame.  As far as colors go, black is one of the less useful if you like concealment.  Anyone who has seen black bears in the woods know that they stand out pretty well against the background.  Guess I better stock up on some foliage green and FDE PMags.
  7. They were $75.
  8. Heck of a deal on barrels right now at Palmetto State. 16", stainless, mid-length gas, 1:9. There were some 1:7s too, but they sold out. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/18253/s/16-mid-length-stainless-steel-5-56-nato-1-9-barrel-with-5-56-nato-1-9-palmetto/category/4399/
  9. Let me preface by saying that I've screwed up all kinds of machinery in my life.  Because I'm curious and like to tinker, I have no fear of taking something apart.  I've learned a lot from my innumerable mistakes.  One of the most important things I've learned is this...  Use the right tool for the job.   That said, It doesn't appear that you've ruined the upper.  If the bolt carrier still slides back and forth smoothly, it should be good to go.  If not, a replacement upper can be had for forty bucks.  Sheesh, I've done waaay more expensive damage than that.     Oh, BTW.  Always measure the ends of a taper pin before trying to punch it out.  Even if the first hundred were all the same direction, always measure.  Ask me how I learned that lesson.   Aaaand one more thing.  I have found that it's better to press pins in and out than to hammer them.  May not always be possible, but it takes less energy if it is.
  10. I THINK that now they use .310-.311 bullets. I do know that in the '90s they used .308 bullets. I may still have some of those rounds if I can find them. They would keyhole from my SKS so I measured them.
  11. Maybe not. I double checked some of my pulled bullets and they were indeed .308 after I scraped off the tar sealant. I don't remember what rounds I pulled them from. I have had some Russian that was .310, too. Seems to be a crap shoot. I used them to make some blasting ammo for my .300 BLK.
  12. I bet the .300 Blk bullet that Dolomite made would work pretty well in that application. After it's powdercoated, the diameter should be enough to size back down to .311. I've pulled bullets from steel cases in order to use the cases. If the bullet weights are similar, I do what he said, average the weights and use that. Or if I'm in a hurry, just pull the bullets and reseat a new one.
  13.   Good stuff.  Especially when it was cheap.     Is a bit corrosive, though.  But not bad.  Never had a problem with my stainless Mini-30.
  14. Not sure about the new commercial ammo, but the old stuff (American) had .308" bullets. Shot some Remington(?) in my SKS back in the '90s and they would keyhole. IIRC, only the first Mini-30s had a .308 bore. They were soon changed to a .310-.311" bore. I've pulled bullets from a few types of 7.62x39. Some old and some new. Don't recall which was which, but some was actually .308", like Dolomite described. Others were proper size.
  15.   Literally?  That's awesome!  But...umm...TMI.
  16.   Ok, good to know.  But since there is a show in Knox the following weekend, I'll skip this one anyway.
  17. Just read this one.  The patient in TX had helped a ebola victim into a cab to find a hospital.  Others helped her too.  They're all sick or dead.   http://news.yahoo.com/dallas-er-sent-ebola-infected-patient-home-050718374.html
  18.   And vomit. And feces.
  19. That guy has everything I want.  A great mullet, a great 'stache, and a worthless talent.
  20.   "Not for nuthin'"?  Are you from New York?
  21. Meh, that "other heifer" is from ill-annoys anyway.  Nobody is interested in what she has to say.   I like THEgunshowgirl.
  22.   I'm not counting on that.  I may be more likely to catch the flu, but I've never known it to be 50% fatal.     I've had the flu about 4 times in my life.  Survived them all.  I'm betting that if those doctors who were treated with that "miracle serum" hadn't gotten the serum, they'd probably be dead.  Or at least messed up for life.  That stuff causes internal hemorrhaging.  Probably permanent damage.  Just speculation of course, since I'm not a doctor from the CDC telling everyone that there isn't anything to worry about.   Oh yeah,  I'm worried about the enterovirus, too, since it's hitting little kids.   Sheesh.  I'm gonna self-quarantine now.     Edit:  I just re-read your post.  I get it now.
  23.   I can think of at least 6 Knoxville Walmartses just offhand.  Any one in particular?  Or is this a local/regional/national event?   Edit: Oops.  Looks like it's at least regional.
  24. If only it weren't in Seeeeverville.  In October.
