  1. If that gauge is correct, there is no way your rifle would chamber a round if it lacked 3/16".   Did you take the extractor and ejector out of the bolt to check the headspace?

Supposedly, the newer ones are more accurate. I have an older model. It was horribly inaccurate. The POI would shift several MOA as the barrel warmed up. A barrel stabilizer helped the vertical shift but added a lot of weight. I had it cryo-treated and that helped immensely. Some people install a gas bushing with a smaller port. I did that too, but it changed my POI drastically. Can't explain why, but it did.
  3. I'm sure a handgun wouldn't penetrate the tanks, but it would probably make a divot.  I doubt they want to have to replace any of those "walls", or whatever they call the tank sides.  Same with knives.  Given enough idiots (there are plenty in "the ATL" in my experience), the glass (poly-whatever) walls would have enough initials and gang symbols scratched into them that they would have to be replaced every year or so probably.  Due to cosmetics if nothing else.   Not defending their policy, but in this one case, I get where they're coming from.  If I opened an aquarium in Maryville, I probably would not post it.  If, however, there was a constant stream of people from Atlanta coming to patronize my aquarium, I probably would institute the same policy.   Jeez, I feel kinda slimy even saying that....
  4. Perhaps I shouldn't post at this hour... but am I the only person who thinks this sounds a bit... um... staged.     Nobody got shot.     It's about 2 weeks before an election.     They're democrats (maybe trying to prove that they're "pro-gun").   The story named the JUVENILES in an incident where no one was hurt.     And.  Ok, seriously...  One of them is named Bizzarro.  I'm not implying that it's not his real name, but it seems kind of appropriate.   "I'm so skeptible."
  5. The 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem also uses .224 bullets. 40 grains will be a very light bullet in the 5.56, but it will work with the right load and twist rate.
  6. That's interesting.  According to that map, Tennessee is one of only 7 states to have a "shall certify" law so the local LE Chief has no option but to approve.   Is that right?
  7.   Haven't heard anything yet.  But I found this thread.  http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?9021-If-Your-Account-Is-Screwed-Up-.-.-.   Looks like they've been having problems with spammers/hackers again so he went through and cleaned out a bunch of inactive accounts (including mine) and even some active ones.   I guess just keep trying.  I'm going to.
  8.   Wow.  You're right.  I just tried to log in with my old ID and password.  Didn't work.  Now I'm trying to re-register.  We'll see how that works out.     I'm cornfused.  Makes no sense.
  9.   That's interesting.  I don't remember needing to be approved.  Maybe try again.  That site isn't nearly as active as this one, they should want as much traffic as possible.     Just to be sure...  this link http://www.65grendel.com/forum/ goes straight to the forum.   After the great site hack in... ummm....  2010 or 2011, it took over a year to bring it back online.  I only made a few posts after it was back online.  Things may have changed.
  10. I'm just not a talker, I guess. :) You'd think after using the internets for 22 years, I'd have a higher post count. <shrug>
  11. I do remember. Not sure what to think about all that. Btw, sorry for the thread hijack! :)
  12. Int'resting. Wonder if overgassed uppers cause that, or at least accelerate it. I can see the buffer slamming into the end of the buffer tube causing some pretty severe stress. Hadn't thought of that before. Guess I'll just shoot it until it gives up and reuse the parts in another lower if necessary.
  13. I have heard of some failures of different types, especially Plum Crazy.  But quite honestly, most of them appear to be due to abuse.  I hope as long as I don't use it as a baseball bat that it will hold up.  Like that picture above.  I just don't see that happening from just shooting.  Of course it's much less likely to happen to an AL receiver.  Everything's a trade-off.   :x:
  14. Well, that's a bit reassuring.  These will be mostly "get-home" guns anyway.  If they start to fail, I'll replace the lower body with an AL one.
  15.   Ooooo.  Care to share what exactly happened?  If you posted it before, I must have missed it.     I have two Plum Crazy lowers.  Light as air, but I don't want them to break.
  16. I have been using the internet since 1992.  I had email before most people knew it existed, or could access it.  (Remember that, back when it was called "e-mail"?)  Before the World Wide Web even existed (I think).     From the beginning, I started reading one of the first gun forums, rec.guns, on Usenet.  I posted occasionally, but not all that much.  Then came, AR15.com, which has become such a behemoth that I rarely check it anymore.   Probably the most I have ever posted on any other gun forum was on 65grendel.com.  But adding up all the posts I have ever made on any and all internet forums in the last 22 years, they would not add up to anywhere near the amount of bandwidth I have used on tngunowners.com.   So, congratulations to TGO for being more worthwhile to me than any other internet resource and thanks to TGO for the same thing.   Sincerely,   Will
  17. Yup, the lapping tool.   Also, anti-seize grease (or another high-quality grease) on the threads.  Plus another trick that gunsmiths use to seat threads:  After applying the grease, tighten, then loosen, then tighten, then loosen, then tighten one more time.  You'll be surprised how much further the nut (or barrel, or whatever) will go.
  18. Shame.  As far as colors go, black is one of the less useful if you like concealment.  Anyone who has seen black bears in the woods know that they stand out pretty well against the background.  Guess I better stock up on some foliage green and FDE PMags.
  19. They were $75.
  20. Heck of a deal on barrels right now at Palmetto State. 16", stainless, mid-length gas, 1:9. There were some 1:7s too, but they sold out. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/18253/s/16-mid-length-stainless-steel-5-56-nato-1-9-barrel-with-5-56-nato-1-9-palmetto/category/4399/
  21. Let me preface by saying that I've screwed up all kinds of machinery in my life.  Because I'm curious and like to tinker, I have no fear of taking something apart.  I've learned a lot from my innumerable mistakes.  One of the most important things I've learned is this...  Use the right tool for the job.   That said, It doesn't appear that you've ruined the upper.  If the bolt carrier still slides back and forth smoothly, it should be good to go.  If not, a replacement upper can be had for forty bucks.  Sheesh, I've done waaay more expensive damage than that.     Oh, BTW.  Always measure the ends of a taper pin before trying to punch it out.  Even if the first hundred were all the same direction, always measure.  Ask me how I learned that lesson.   Aaaand one more thing.  I have found that it's better to press pins in and out than to hammer them.  May not always be possible, but it takes less energy if it is.
  22. I THINK that now they use .310-.311 bullets. I do know that in the '90s they used .308 bullets. I may still have some of those rounds if I can find them. They would keyhole from my SKS so I measured them.
  23. Maybe not. I double checked some of my pulled bullets and they were indeed .308 after I scraped off the tar sealant. I don't remember what rounds I pulled them from. I have had some Russian that was .310, too. Seems to be a crap shoot. I used them to make some blasting ammo for my .300 BLK.
  24. I bet the .300 Blk bullet that Dolomite made would work pretty well in that application. After it's powdercoated, the diameter should be enough to size back down to .311. I've pulled bullets from steel cases in order to use the cases. If the bullet weights are similar, I do what he said, average the weights and use that. Or if I'm in a hurry, just pull the bullets and reseat a new one.
  25.   Good stuff.  Especially when it was cheap.     Is a bit corrosive, though.  But not bad.  Never had a problem with my stainless Mini-30.
