  1. What Cruel Hand said is very true in the sense that it outlines the specific differences in sport BJJ vs. Self Defense Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I personally find sport BJJ to be very much a better than nothing kind of thing, but if you are relying on grabbing the gi for self defense you have mis-calculated.   There is a very large difference between BJJ and self defense Jiu Jitsu. If you are training legitimate self defense Gracie Jiu jitsu you are getting training in surprise attacks standing, gun, stick, and knife defenses, clinching an opponent, and controlling the position and defending yourself on the ground, all while working toward finishing the fight.    To me, the biggest advantage Gracie Jiu jitsu has over other arts is that it is the one art that can be effectively practiced 3-5 times a week against a fully resisting opponent. They are working to clinch and submit you, and you are working toward the same against them. If you don't know how to stay calm and survive in the worst possible places you could find yourself in during a fight, then you don't really know how to effectively defend yourself.    This is very much the 9 vs 45 debate of the martial arts world. Clearly anything beats no training, but all else being equal, and I mean that we all operate under limited time and money, GJJ offers the most complete and practical self defense system.
  2. If I were in Nashville and looking to get into martial arts I would start looking at training Jiu Jitsu with Eric Silver. He is a black belt under Rickson Gracie, which is a very big deal in the Jiu Jitsu community. If you don't know much about Jiu Jitsu, or Rickson Gracie, you owe it to yourself to spend some time on google before you make the decision. His academy there is Zanshin I believe. Full disclosure; I have no affiliation to, or in no way know them over there. I've been on the mat with him a few times, and he has an excellent reputation as an instructor.    You are correct to be aware of any fad in martial arts. Krav Maga is the flavor of the day, and I'm sure there is no shortage of places willing to take your money. This will be true in most martial arts though. What separates Jiu Jitsu for me is that you will actually be able to spar and prove to yourself that it is effective against a live, fully resisting opponent. Most martial arts can't say that. If you go to a place, and they give you a line about not practicing full speed because it's too deadly…walk out. If you have any other questions Id be glad to help.
  3. Guys, I think we can all agree here that we need to end the fed. So, to that end I'll be willing to allow you all to mail me your federal reserve notes. You know, so we can all share one voice and stuff...
  4. I just got back from a pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota. That looks to be a hen in 10-Ring's pic, and that definitely is a rooster in the op's pic. I also have a freezer full of those birds right now, and they are delicious. If anyone has some recipes they could point me too, I would be very appreciative. I wouldn't mind some creative ways to cook these things up.
  5. Yep. I'm glad they stuck to their word on this one. I hope Beretta/Kahr/Remington do the same. Side note...Must be nice to live in a state that will aggressively pursue these manufacturing jobs.
  6. Well, at least we got 3 pages in before this thread went exactly the same way that every thread about him on here has before.
  7. Join the GSSF. It won't cure you, but at least it will help manage the symptoms with a once per year coupon for a Glock.
  8. In the past month he's started to post on another forum I frequent. As usual trying to agitate and stir the pot. I suppose he's not getting the attention he wants here so he has begun to look for trouble elsewhere.    There was a time in this country, not that long ago either, when someone who went this far out of their to make trouble for themselves wouldn't have lasted this long in society.
  9. Probably not a photoshop job. Her and her husband are the two biggest proponents of the old " I support the 2A, but…." line. It's like the only credentials the left think you need to make a statement on gun control is to qualify it with that line.   I also can't stand how they think her getting shot somehow made her an expert on violence. Which makes about as much sense as saying that getting in a wreck qualifies me for the Daytona 500.
  10. Agreed. Also, seems like every used gun ad these days starts with "rare" or "unique".
  11. These politicians understand exactly that. Which is why that's not what this is about.
  12. Good Lord, people are truly nuts.
  13.     You do realize this is the exact mentality the leftist grabbers have about guns, right? Come on, we're better than that here.
  14. Just saw this as well. Another member of the greatest generation lost. 94 is a good run though, and we should all hope to leave behind such a lasting mark on the world. RIP.
  15. The M&P Sport is about as good a rifle as you get for around $650. Past that, sign up for the daily deal e-mail at Palmetto State, they run incredible deals on rifle kits and regularly put blem lowers on sale for $59. If you are patient you can get a great PSA rifle for around $600.
  16. And it's my birthday!!!!!!
  17. PSA Daily deal email. For the money, it's tough to beat them.
  18. I read this yesterday as well. Aside from the cost of ammo going up, I couldn't help but wonder if one day this will bite our military by putting us at a disadvantage in production capabilities.
  19. Seemed like the boar in the woods was dying of the same affliction as the pig in the prison. I'm curious to see what this shakes out to be. Pretty good season opener all around I thought.
  20. Chattanooga Jiu Jitsu Academy. For pure self defense it's the best in town. Today we had a 3 hour seminar with Rorion Gracie, the inventor of the UFC. Mickey is a fantastic guy, and an even better instructor. He will let you try the program out for 10 days no charge. Let me know if you have any questions.   ETA:   Unless you specifically want to fight MMA, stay away from MMA schools. MMA is a sport, they train their guys to compete and win fights against opponents in the same weight class. That is all. If someone running an MMA gym tells you it is "street applicable" they are either trying to get your money, or woefully misguided.
  21. The 19. Hands down All around great gun.
  22. I'm surprised it took Starbucks this long to do this. They have repeatedly asked both the OC activists and MDA to leave them out of this debate. If you want to have your political views recognized and validated, go to the ballot box, stop trying to force your beliefs on a disinterested private business. Show up at city council meetings, hell, run for office. All they wanted to do was sell people coffee. It seems to me that this was the best way for Starbucks to bow out of a fight they didn't get themselves in to begin with.
  23. I came very, very close to buying my first one a few weeks ago. But the trigger was AWFUL. And I'm a Glock guy, I have a fairly high tolerance for bad triggers. This trigger was next level bad. I still want one, and most likely will pick one up at some point. If felt like sand was being rubbed against the trigger as you pulled it. They seem like great guns, and I really want to try one out. I just couldn't see putting down $500 right now on one with a trigger that bad.
  24. I'm in for two. I would have some interest in the uppers as well.
  25. Worst thing about Glocks is you'll never stop at just one.
