Good thread. Good to know that I'm not alone in my interpretation that keeping a 9" bowie with my camping/hiking gear is perfectly acceptable. Seems to clearly fall under the "incidental to.." lawful activity section.

From what I read it seemed that the midlength was the way to go considering it was only 10.00 more than the carbine length. Now if spikes would only ship faster. 1-4 weeks, more likely toward the 4 end. Reasonable really, but I will have a hard time resisting the urge to stalk my email inbox waiting for a tracking #. Its like waiting for the mail when you're expecting your HCP to show up. When it comes in I'll probably take the day off work to pick it up and go break it in.

Sigh, yes. Already doing some browsing for possible accessories. I really want to take it out 100% as delivered and do some shooting, then decide what to add. I do like the Magpul MOE hand guard. Inexpensive and allow easy rail mounting points. As far as optics, EOTech = nice, but that might just wait until my tax return is in the bank.

That's one reason I went with Spikes. Did a lot of searching and reading and, for the most part, Spikes was viewed favorably in the "affordable" category. I did clarify their warranty. The site states the warranty is lifetime but doesn't specify if that only applies to the original owner. Apparently all Spikes Tactical gear has a lifetime fully transferable warranty. If their customer service after the sale is as good as it was prior to purchase I think I made a good choice.

Well, after wanting an AR for a while, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one. I debated building vs buying. I still want to and probably will build another, but I decided to just purchase a complete rifle for my first.. So, I ordered this: ST-15 Mid-Length LE Carbine [sTR5035-MLS] - $809.95 : Spikes Tactical Mid-length gas system, 1:7 twist. Full specs available at the aforementioned link. Build + shipping was less than the price listed on Spike's site. Cost + shipping + transfer fee will put me right at $820 OTD. That includes a little extra $$ for some "coloration" work on the logo and such on the lower. Probably not the best deal out there, but I don't think it is ridiculously expensive. Although it'll be a few weeks before I have the rifle in hand, I'm impressed with Spike's customer service through the initial ordering process.

I'd say if you have a bad guy with a gun pointed at you it is certainly time to shoot. Of course, only you can make that determination for a particular situation. I'd try to step to one side while bringing my weapon on target to (hopefully) make the guy miss if he returns fire. Anything to give you an extra second or two for follow up shots. Shoot while moving to cover (if available). I am by no means a qualified expert, but this tactic makes sense to me.

I have one that will be passed down to me too. I'll be the third generation to own it. An old Smith snub in 38S&W. My grandfather recently told me he wanted me to go shoot it "to see if it still works." He handed me the original box of ammo that was purchased when the gun was bought many many years ago. My great grandfather shot about 1/2 of that box, loaded it up, and carried it every day until he died. My grandfather never carried or fired it. I cleaned it, loaded up some rounds from the same box, and ran 10 rounds through it. Flawless! Sorry for the thread derailment.

David, Just wanted to say thank you for this offer! Yet another example of TGOers willing to help each other out. Thankfully, I was able to pick up a new bag already. Had to order some new hearing protection too since mine seems to have "vanished." Certainly appreciate the offer though!

I've thought about this a bit as well. Primitive efforts to make powder could end disastrously. I recall reading that explosions were quite common in the early days of manufacturing powder. How about alternatives such as archery? Master the skills of trapping? That said, it could be done and is probably a viable long term option.

Thank you all for the support. I can't say I'm overly surprised it ended, but the timing just irritated me. After all, I could have bought a new gun for what I spent on her for Christmas! And the gun would actually be around for a lifetime. No, I'm not really that shallow. Just trying to throw some humor into the situation. I know I'm better off. I shouldn't have allowed any sort of getting back together to occur in the first place.

Even that's complicated. I've actually been married to her before (ah, I can hear the laughter from here). Guess I didn't learn my lesson the first time. We'd been "back together" for about a year. I was married to her for three years, but there was a chunk of several years between then and now. She's been staying with me and our son every weekend..and apparently with someone else during the week.

Don't you all hate it when relationships end abruptly right after the holidays? I know I do! I wont bore everyone with the sad details, but I swear I think I just got "used" by my (now ex) girlfriend. Get the Christmas presents and then suddenly be "seeing someone else." Interesting tactic. Sorry all, but I had to vent juuust a little. Carry on. Oh, and don't ever share a range bag with someone. Since our range bag was hers I came home to all my ammo and range items dumped on the floor.

Just thought I'd follow up on this thread. I picked up a Wilson 47D mag today. All I can say is "nice!" Huge improvement over the factory 7rd Springfield mag. My Springfield GI typically hangs up a little when feeding the first round of hollow point ammo. Takes a bit of futzing with the slide to get that first round to feed. That always somewhat concerned me, but it has never failed to feed while firing. That problem disappeared completely with the Wilson magazine. It was so smooth I dropped the mag and cleared the weapon because I wasn't convinced it actually chambered a round. I haven't had a chance to shoot with the Wilson mag yet, but I'm certainly impressed so far.

Therein lies part of the problem. I'm not picking on you, President Fernatt, but pointing out that too many of the younger crowd seem oblivious to what is going on around them. Everything is great as long as Dominos still brings the pizza and the XBox is working. I'm still one of the "young folk" myself (at least in my own mind) and the future of this nation worries me when I think about how most of my friends live their lives oblivious to any "big picture" issues. I know your post was made in jest, but it made me stop and think about how (generally) true your statement is.

I may order some Cobra mags to check out. Expensive, yes.. When you consider the possible consequences of a mag failure at the wrong time it seems well worth the expense. One of my 1911s is a "cheap" RIA so I probably shouldn't speak too much on only buying the best. I am definitely going to pick up a couple of Wilson mags. Can't have too many, right? More than likely an ADT dealer representative going door to door. However, it is not unheard of for unscrupulous individuals to use this same technique for information gathering purposes. While you didn't engage this person in conversation, I recommended everyone in a similar situation get a phone # for the dealer that the person represents and call to confirm he or she is an actual employee. Calling the ADT toll free # directly wont necessarily be helpful because these people generally work for local companies that are authorized ADT dealers.

No suggestions for you, but I am considering developing a shot timer Android app. Haven't had a chance to sit down and plan it out though.

I have two 1911's, a RIA Compact and a Springfield GI. Currently I have one mag for each gun. The 7rd Springfield mag functions in the RIA but (obviously) the 7rd mag that came with the RIA is too short to seat in the full size Springfield. Granted, the Springfield mag looks a little funny hanging out the bottom of the RIA. I'm looking to pick up a few new mags for each. Suggestions? Spotted any deals recently?
