Any guess if they are open? we are back in knoxville and I don't want to drive that far and find another closed sign. Many twra ranges say closed during deer season
Guess I'm late to reply to this, but the North Cumberland WMA range is open 365 days/yr from daylight til dark except for the rare times when they're mowing the grass or doing range maintenance. 2.
I love the build of these guns, and the action is super nice. I just wish they would have put some sights on this gun... I know it's a hunting rifle meant for a scope, but I like shooting with iron sights!!!
That was a detractor for me as well. I guess it was one of the corners they cut for the price point.
  3. Every year I let my son pick out a Christmas present for me. This year he picked out a Ruger American rifle in 30-06. I just got to handle it briefly before putting it away for Christmas, but it seems like a solid rifle. Sort of reminds me of the Savage Axis but with a better (adjustable) trigger. I think he picked a Ruger since he knows I got a Ruger SR-22P for him to use to improve his handgunning skills. I expect it to be a serviceable budget rifle once set up with some decent optics. help
boys and I loaded up and went to Norris and its closed.any suggestions as to somewhere else to go?
Drive on up the interstate to the 141 exit. The Royal Blue/North Cumberland TWRA range is up there.. Just bring a truck or suv.. Cars might have some trouble.
  5. Speaking of Royal Blue and the range. Is there a place near there to shoot a bow? My son is wanting to pick up some form of archery but I have no idea where I'd take him to shoot it. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  6. Nice 1911! Careful, they tend to multiply.
  7.
I did get somewhat confused though when the rangers told me they were tired of the mess up there and were taking the garbage cans away. I'm not justifying slobs by any means...but if you can't get people to pick up their mess when there is are garbage cans close by, how can you expect it to get better by removing them? On a slightly related matter, I'm sure a google search can answer this, but if I get a WMA permit, do the proceeds from that go to the rangers and everyone else up there? I will gladly go get one even though I don't need to if it will help keep that range open. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Yes, those funds go 100% to TWRA. As does $0.10 of every box of ammo you buy here in Tennessee (the ammo tax). Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  8.
Went out here with a friend today, he said I need a WMA or Hunting Permit to shoot there, which he had, and supposedly covered me. I would like to be able to go out there more often so spent a lot of time reading over the several rules boards that were there to see if I could find out what I needed to go back out, and couldn't see anything about a WMA or Hunting Permit. Does anyone here know what may or may not be needed to shoot over there?
None of the above. There are "permit required" signs posted along Flatwoods road. Four-wheeling, hiking or horseback riding in the area requires either the land use permit or hunting +wma permit. Driving along Flatwoods road with the intent of getting to and from the shooting range does *not* require any permits. I spent two days playing phone tag with TWRA to confirm this about a year ago. I also ran it by the local FFL/license dealer and they were told the same thing. I have the aforementioned hunting license/wma add-on, but that's because I like to explore the trails up there in my Jeep. Stick to the route going to/from the range and you're good with no permits. got laid off
Went in this morning and my company is "restructuring", so I got laid off due to what will be a lack of work. (their words) So if anyone knows of any IT opportunities in the knoxville area, please forward them my way. Help desk, jr level server admin, system engineer, system/support analyst, etc.
Look up "Premier Staffing Partners" in Knoxville. They've got me a few really good interviews in the past. Very low pressure folks to work with too.
  10.
Just like carry in National Parks got attached to Credit Card Reform bill. - OS
Exactly.
  11. I can see an AWB being passed as some add-on part of a major financial bill. Sort of "attached" to something the GOP wants to get them to vote it through. You know, in the name of "compromise." As a standalone bill...no way.
  12.
Plantronics Voyager HD: Grrreat with my wife's Evo, ... Awful with my iPhone 4S.
I have this same model. Outstanding sound quality. I use it for a good 3 hours of talk time daily. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  13.
If your in La Follette just north of lake city then your about 20 min out from my old mans shop. You'll have a pm incoming about some pictures. Thanks man
Yup, that's where I'm at. I'll be looking for your PM! Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  14.
I have been on Atkins low carb diet since February of this year. Lost 60 lbs. I have been pretty strict but I decided to buy some Ben and Jerry's Half Baked ice cream for tonight. The reason why I am going to break my diet is: A) to celebrate RR's victory to throw a pity party if it goes the other way Either way I can wait it eat the ice cream! Yum !! Yum !!
Congrats on your success! I've been doing the paleo thing for about a year now. 55lb gone and counting. While not as strict as Atkins, it does tend to be lower carb than the standard American diet. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  15.
I'll have to wait on spending the cash on the camera and on the software. We are a one income family right now, with to many bills to count due to a stupid youth. I'm loving the advice though. All of this stuff will help. I don't really plan to make photography even a hobby, right now I just need to be able to produce quality photos that make my products look as good as possible. All of this is a lil overwhelming, I had no idea there was so much to it. Looks like I'll have to start saving for a camera, software, and a light box setup.
I happen to have access to a good camera and the aforementioned lens. I'm not a pro, but I can take some decent shots. If you're not too far away maybe I could come out and shoot a few for you? Like I said, I'm no pro, but I'm willing to help if we can work out the logistics. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  16. Carry is legal as long as you're not voting at a school and the facility isn't otherwise a prohibited place. I carried while voting today.
  17.
This is what I run here at my office. I bought this back when it was a bit more expensive: http://www.amazon.co...rds=NIKON D3000 $444.00 and you have a camera that can pretty much do anything you need it to Looks like you can find used ones for about $275 - $300 ... I'd scour Craigslist to find one
This...and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. Should do nicely for this type of photography. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  18. Just finished voting. I was one of the two voters in the polling place at the time.
  19. The handle is micarta. Pretty grippy but it also holds on to oil. That's one downside to the knife that I've found. You have to keep the handle cleaned up or the voids in the Micarta fill in and become slick.
  20. If you missed the "Talking Dead" after show, Iron E (TDog) was the guest on the show. He almost became emotional at times. It was obviously an emotional and difficult episode for the cast to get through. Good stuff. They put a lot into this show!
  21. I'm a fan of both. The sheath is one of my favorites. It hangs naturally when kneeling or sitting and makes access to the knife very easy and natural.
  22. Welcome!
  23. Hey Greg, you gonna be making those for other firearms? I might want one for a 1911. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
  24. I've had this blade for a few months now and I've had the chance to put it through some hard work. I've been really impressed with this knife from BHK. It carries a pretty hefty price tag by my standards ($150), but it has been a real workhorse. It's made of O1 tool steel and seems to have excellent edge retention. It does require regular upkeep to prevent rust. Mine has formed a nice patina on the blade through some use. No problems with rust since I keep it dry and coated with some light lube when not in use. Here's a stock photo from BHK: Here's mine (fresh from a sharpening, cleaning and oiling):
  25.
Also, if your PP account gets funded from sales, you can get a PayPal MasterCard debit card and from reading online it apparently works fine for everything, including firearm purchases so I guess that's a loophole in PayPal TOS. - OS
Not a loophole exactly, but close. Issuing banks are held to standards set by the card association (Visa/MC). Other than in very rare circumstances (ex: a debit card tied to a health savings accou or corporate T&E card) the card issuer has little say so as far as what kind of (legal) transactions you can make. Trying to restrict the use of a Visa or Mastercard would not make big brother (Visa/MC) happy.
