If it helps anyone to think about, I won't mow a property with low hanging branches... mine - or anyone else's. If it is not an evergreen - or if the branches don't go to the ground, limb it up so that the lowest hanging part of any branch is at least 7'. This is especially important for those mowing on zero turn riders. ZT's are quick, heavy, and many of them are actually controlled with fine motor skill.. .so once you strike a limb, that initial flinch could end up driving you harder into the limb.... bad things. If things go south (and when they do mowing, it happens FAST) between you and a limb, we are the squishy bag between a deep-rooted tree and a steel beast. While we're on it: Also, don't mow close to water on a ZT. even with a seat belt on, if the ground gives way and you flip into the muck, there is not a person alive that can pull that machine off of you, and most likely, you will drown a foot or two into the mud on the bottom of the lake/pond, etc. Heal up, 380.

My favorite from any of them on any issue... Not sure why. I know most of you believe that nobody up there gives a rat's behind, but I spent some time up there a couple of decades ago shadowing politicians. I walked away vowing to never return because I did not think I could ever make a difference. It seemed like everyone was a hamster on a wheel much of the time. You have to give so much to get a little for your constituents. Anyway here is Alexander's response I got today: "Thanks very much for getting in touch with me and letting me know what’s on your mind regarding defunding the health care law and the government shutdown. The President’s health care law was an historic mistake because it expanded and made even more expensive a health care delivery system that costs too much and restricts peoples’ choices. It must be dismantled and repealed. I fought strongly against when it was proposed and when the president and Democrats forced it through Congress, I voted against it the first time, and I’ve been working to dismantle and repeal the law ever since – including voting 23 times on the Senate floor to repeal, defund, delay, or otherwise stop the law from being implemented. You can review my efforts at my website: http://www.alexander.senate.gov/public/ The federal government shutdown has been disappointing. It’s been disappointing to me, to those who are affected by it and, I’m sure, to the American people. What has been especially disappointing to me is the unwillingness of President Obama and Senate Democrats to resolve the differences of opinion that exist – stubbornness in the face of unreasonableness that is not good for our country. It’s not unusual that we have differences of opinion in Washington, D.C. In fact, the Founders created a government with the expectation that it would resolve disputes we couldn’t resolve in our city councils, county commissions or state legislatures. And the Founders intended that those disputes not be resolved easily by creating a system of checks and balances – a Supreme Court, a presidency, a Congress – that would keep the majority from riding roughshod over the minority. A king is efficient – tyranny is efficient. But what the Founders didn’t envision was a system that produced permanent stalemate. They didn’t envision that the government would simply shut down or stop operating and trying to come to a result. Congress took a step toward reasonableness on September 30, when the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate passed legislation to make sure that active-duty military personnel are paid during the shutdown. We should make absolutely sure that we’re not running the risk that a single soldier fighting in Afghanistan has a paycheck that is late, and the mortgage can’t be paid. The House has taken other steps toward reasonableness. For example, it passed a proposal on September 28 that would have funded the federal government while delaying Obamacare’s individual mandate – which requires Americans to buy health insurance – and repealing the burdensome tax on medical devices. President Obama has already delayed at least seven major provisions of his health care law, and the medical device tax increases the cost of life-saving devices and is already killing good jobs for Tennesseans. I supported the original House bill, which would have defunded Obamacare. I also voted in favor of two procedural motions to cut off debate on the House-passed bill and move to a final vote on that bill, because I supported the House-passed bill and the failure of either vote would have ensured that the government shut down. Now, with the shutdown in effect, I hope Democrats begin to make reasonable efforts to resolve our differences. And Republicans need to earn the trust of the American people so we can take over the government the way the Constitution says: elect more Republican senators and a Republican president to delay, dismantle, repeal and replace Obamacare with step-by-step reforms that reduce the cost of health care. I appreciate your taking the time to let me know where you stand on this important issue. I will be sure to keep your comments in mind as this is being discussed and debated in Washington and in Tennessee. Sincerely, Lamar" Thoughts?

Peace replied to Peace's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Well, there's the bright side. My wife will be thrilled that I get to keep my tooth. :D Yes, DB, you warned me.... though with the cost of ammo, I may have to start up an archery version using the recurve bow - maybe on horseback ('cause everyone knows horses are cheap). I have already had to talk myself down from trying to qualify/enter the MCCiii. - having never run any competition... ever. I can methodically prepare for MCCiv. Whenever I do get to jump in. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys at the competition.... -
UPDATE: I went back to the range yesterday to sight in a "new to me" scope. I couldn't group at 25 yards. It was left, it was right ... consistently up, then consistenly down. Weird, weird, weird. I wasted a lot of ammo - thinking it was me. Then I remembered. I'll contact LWRC and see what they say.

ok, I forgot this one.. and it is stupider than my other ones. Back a few years ago we had a gathering of folks every week at our house. All of them were young -single/married early to late 20s w/ a couple of us 30's folks. Some of them were dog people, but none of them had ever hunted dogs. One night as we were eating food and settling in, someone said something about our e-collar for Lucy (weim, great retriever when it is 60deg or cooler!). A couple of the women shrunk back in horror at the thought. "A shock collar!?" oh the horrors. Since Lucy.. and the collar were within reach, I was quick to reassure them that I had used it on myself (hands) ... and it was only for reinforecement of what she knew - not punishment. To further make my point, I picked up the collar, put it on my neck (which I had actually never done before), turned it on and hit the button. Now... in the seconds that followed (slo-mo, please), I never felt a thing - no pain, no sting, nothing, BUT the electronic stimulus violently contracted all of the muscles on the back, left side of my neck, and as my head flung uncontrollably left over my shoulder, my lips and tongue flopped about... and the slobber that slung off my lips hit the ground at about the same time as some of my friends - who were literally dying from laughter. yup. didn't see that one coming. If I had been watching, it would've been one of the funniest things I'd ever seen... only I wasn't watching. ... I was twitching, and slobbering.

I was up at MCSC, and the day was drawing to a close. I decided to finish out the day in their tactical pistol range. RSO asked me if I had ever shot there, I said "no. He said, great, well, we have it set up in a basic 5,6,5 stage. I laughed and let him know I had no idea what he was talking about. Long story, short: My first run through I dropped the mag in the second set with 3 rounds left in it (FTT - Failure To Think). .. laughed about it, & reset - and had some great runs. (3 "stations" with about 15 feet from one to the next) I did miss one on my fastest two runs, but I felt like I was going at a snail's pace. I think 22 seconds w/ one miss was my best. I would've gladly taken 35sec with no misses, but I couldn't slow down enough. Anyway, the RSO scoring and timing me seemed to think that - since I hadn't shot in months, and since I was shooting a stock G23, and it seemed really easy for me, this might be something I could really enjoy. I don't make enough money for this! I am now hooked... we'll see where this ends up.

They can use other appropriate firearms as they are growing up. They can have them when they adults and ready - I suppose I'll know when that is... or maybe just when I kick the bucket. ... something like a Annie Oakley special for her - accurate, light touches. A CQC rifle for him. I'm thinking an 16 or 18" 1/7 twist for her in 5.56. Maybe a 16" 6.8SPC for him.

Wow. Just wow.

I am sorry for the child's loss of his/her mother, and for those who lost a loved one yesterday. Now... this was an unarmed lady with a child in a late model luxury coupe. Anit-gunners want us all to disarm to a "reasonable" level (whatever that is), and LE will protect us from all the criminals/terrorists, etc. - who will be armed with whatever suits their purpose. Yet, in the most protected city in the nation - in the two most protected sites, this one lady runs amuck for long enough to cause this havoc and media frenzy? (nobody knows how to box in a car? -- or is training and attitude so lax that officers performance suffered?) Whatever will they/we do if a real, organized attack should ever hit? - and D.C. residents are ok with staying unarmed in that city? The terrorists have to be laughing - along with Putin.

Alright, back for seconds... I was a sickly kid in ways... so I took medicine every morning. One morning, I took my medicine, and went out, got my dog's heartworm pill (that I gave it daily), went down to where we kept the pup, went to give him the heart-worm pill, and he wouldn't take it. I looked down and my eyes got real big. If my medicine was in my hand, ... then where was Duke's pill? aw crap. I got to miss school that day.

One of the first posts I made here, I came out with "clip" and got some bashin' and some compassion. - but I learnt real quick-like which was which. Well, glad to know Remington/Marlin have retained the quality employees in the marketing dept.

As I will teach my son... if you've never done it, and they say it's fun, or cool, or whatever, you go ahead and let them go first. Nice one, safe. You underestimate yourself.

Nashville Metro Parks' "public" status is leveraged
Peace replied to Peace's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'm not as concerned about the looks of it as the politics of it. I could embrace it if there were stringent dollar amounts/year/sponsor attached to it - with no loopholes for shadow sponsors. When the parks become addicted to outside funding and can't (don't want to) function without them, then the parks will do as the financiers wish. -
Oh boy. Just what we all wanted. Now corporations will have a vested interest in our public spaces, ... and through the side door (instead of the back door) have sway over how we use our public property. Genius. Let 'em grow wild, let them be wild spaces. Police them and let them be... but don't sell them off to the highest bidder! ok, your turn. Am I seeing this wrong? http://wkrn.com/story/23591597/paid-sponsorships-in-metro-parks

Thanks Bassman. I've got to stop typing on the stinking iPad..... If I wanted them to tune me out, I'd offend them by calling them out.

When you are tightening down the hot wire that came loose on the back of your dryer, make sure to unplug the cord from the wall. There's a but of voltage running through them wires, and it hurts. -TMF _____________________________________________________________________ :tinfoil:

The Jake Locker story -with an injured hip and knee brought back the memory of my stupidity just a few months ago. I thought we all might share a little laugh at ourselves. Here's mine: We have a lot of stumps on our 1 acre property - 14, mostly mature, most cut off between 8" and 3' from ground level (thank you previous owner). It would cost a boatload (to me) to have them ground and removed, so I thought I would just chip away at them one at a time. Stump #1 was a good candidate, only 8 or so inches high, I could chip a little each morning before my shower and be done in no time. I started in with the pickaxe slowly and carefully - learning my technique. As I worked my way around the stump, the pieces really started coming off. I was literally chipping away at the stump in good time. After making one full revolution around the stump, I turned up the heat and really started swinging... -no sooner did I do that, than a 6"x8" piece of elm came rocketing off of that stump and into the inside of my right knee. I hit the ground like my leg had been cut off... no thought, no reaction.. just down. As I realized I was on the ground - rolling back and forth and groaning, I was sure I was ok - a serious injury would never hurt this bad. - but I was looking around trying to see if anyone in the neighborhood had heard or seen me go down... I was out of breath, dizzy, nauseous, and couldn't put weight on that leg. Crazy pain was radiating up to my hip. All of this pain (I could barely breathe), and my greatest concern was - how the heck was I going to get up and across the yard to the house?! I grabbed the pickaxe and pulled myself up - using it as a crutch/cane to get across the yard and into the house. I must've looked pitiful. My 5yr old kids sprang into action - without me saying a word - ran and got the frozen peas out of the freezer and told me to lay down on the couch and prop my leg up - and put some ice on that knee (yes, I was proud - though a bit out of it). In hindsight, I could see my stupidity - that the angle of the pickaxe leveraged debris right toward my body - legs in particular - with the velocity of the projectile commensurate to the force with which I swung. - I'm lucky I didn't break a tibia. -if that piece had hit me in the nuts, I would've been in a coma. That stump is still there - just as I left it, and I still have the scar. It's a "stupid" scar. What about you?
