  1. ... And no, you won't need an AR. If it helps, you would be 1/8th mile from the local precinct HQ. almost literally across the street.
  2. It's a mixed bag through there. That is right by White Bridge Road... Transitional area. As with most locations, if you are going about legal business in normal waking hours, you have to work to get into trouble most of the time. If you are operating after normal waking hours.... well, it gets easier to find trouble no matter where you are.
  3. Yeah, if that's when we're signed up for EOTWAWKI, I'm gonna' have to reschedule.   That's the first of the month... places to go, people to see.   Keep calm, carry on.
  4. FWIW, my experience is that the Independence 5.56 is Minute-of-Barn accurate. Flyers at 25yds. It does go bang, though.
  5. My left hand clicked on the thread while my right hand (left brain) knew it wasn't true.
  6. ^^Holy mother of madness. Glad you made it. You qualify. Welcome to the club. :)
  7. If the government is going to give "perks", then it ought to do so without prejudice.     by the way: You all are smarter, wittier, funnier, and generally more caring than most.  - glad to be a part.
  8. There was a time when we needed to have folks get married and have kids - to grow our country and economy.  It also re-inforced our culture -largely of single-marriage, 2-4 kid, working class families.  Thus the tax credit made sense.   I don't know enough to say whether it should be removed or not.   As far as marriage.  hmm.   I was a pastor for years, and was a Christian for many more years.  As most people see it, I am neither now.  So, as someone who has "been on the inside" - who was a conservative evangelical - who's world-view was formed by - and who's life was given over to Christian mission, and who is sympathetic to the many, many Christian loved ones and friends with whom I share life, this is my perspective:   This whole issue is a case of the church pointing a gun at her foot and pulling the trigger.  Society evolves (I know, bad word).  We are creatures of progress - thus the reason that we are not still living in caves with pointy sticks.  Women's rights (as they have differed from men's .. ie. the recognized rights of the powerless vs the recognized rights of those who held power) over time is an easy way to view this change.  Most of us now would say that any culture that deprives women of basic rights is a barbaric culture.        At some point in the not-to-distant past, conservative religious types saw the writing on the wall and knew that this (marriage equality) fight was coming to a national stage to stay.  If,... if at that point they had said,      "Hey... we're for separation of church and state, and we realize that we are not the only people group in our country or in the world.  So, we would like to keep the name "marriage" exclusive to the church - as it has great religious significance to us.  In order to do that, how can we help you (those who do would like to be legally recognized as a family unit) be treated fairly by the government - which should be impartial to us all?"       ... if the church had done that, conservative politics might be in a very different state... many middlers .. and even fiscally conservative democrats (want-to-be republicans who are incompatible with bigotry), would most likely be republicans, and 2012 would've looked much different.  - With that said, I do understand that uber-conservatives who's values are inextricably tied to their reilgious convictions would probably have jumped ship at that point - which is sad,..   and here is why....       -Do you remember "Where The Red Fern Grows"?  How you catch your first raccoon to train your hound?   .. Billy puts a shiny piece of metal in a log with a small hole.  (I know we all know this story)  The raccoon grabs the shiny metal and will not let go of it.  This results in dead raccoon.   (you can do the same thing with some monkeys - termite holes, and fruit)  The conservative/religious tie in this country is a lot like that raccoon and that shiny piece of metal.  Great conviction without long-term strategy... and no willingness to give up an inch in order to take a mile later.  Short-sightedness and emotional obsessing (I want it all... now!) is killing conservsative politics in our country.     Culture progresses; it's what we do.  Denying that is,... well...good luck.   If you find yourself wanting to kick that comment, just take a good, honest look at human history - the good and the bad... choose any specific culture, Christianity included... tell me progress is bad (David, Solomon?... where do you think all of Solomon's wealth came from?... do you think fairies mined the gold?  nope.. slaves.. with a horrific living situation and a short life span...Catholic church in the middle-ages anyone?  Luther?).  Progress is what we do, and in the moment - being trapped in the present (and formed by the past), we are mostly ill-suited to judge progress.  Managing (instead of trying to deny it), might be a better policy.    "Conservative" as an absolute is not functional in governance.  It's a non-starter for beings that are naturally progressive (intellectually and emotionally) - the results of which we are obviously seeing.  "Conservative" and "Liberal" are meant to indicate the rate of progress - not "for or against" progress.  With my view being that conservatives do their best to match the pace of (policy) progress at or just below the speed of cultural and economic progress.  Liberals tend to want to drive the progress through policy.  I am of the opinion that this is an important distinction that the american public needs to know in order to understand and steward our government.    When conservatives stopped managing progress and started trying to deny it (ie. "drive progress backwards through policy), they were grabbing on tight to that shiny piece of metal in the log, and they are now getting bludgeoned  to death. - because they are working against human nature - in doing this, they come off as uncaring of others... thus they are loosing emotional and intellectual connection with the population.  No amount of conviction will make up for that, and over the long haul, people groups will give in to emotional comfort over logic... thus the way policy is pushed through media these days.   Serparation of church and state is a good thing.  Adults treating other adults like adults is a good thing.     Adults (in power) failing to treat other adults (subjects) as adults -throw in taxes... seems to me I remember something about that in a history book.
  9.      I respect you all and love this community, so I'll offer my 2c - none of this is directed at any one person, but it is a reflection of answering my own personal initial reactions (which seem to match most of us here).          This story makes me sad in some ways; however, this is old news.  The decision to close the plant was made long ago, and the decision not to re-build was announced in June, and.... and... while enevitably not good for ammo-land, juicing up scare-talk instead of searching for solutions is just going to make ammo more scarce.  Anyone want to look up the situation of our lead stores surplus?  We need to be funding solutions (politcal?), ... and running to walmart to buy up overpriced federal 62gr is not a solution, it is a reaction.   If we all stay scared and jittery about our ammo all the time.. we'll seem like the crazies some folks want to see.   2014 is coming, and we had better be talking about the economy, the economy, the economy (things to which even non-gun-owners can relate!)(the fed's should have subsidized the plant to meet the requirements - for economic and national security interests).  Bill Clinton's montra just might be the savior of conservative politics in the USA.   It is bad for a nation to be without a primary lead smelter "in-country", and this stinks for those that are loosing their jobs, but this is good for the health of the families in and around that town, period.        Anytime we mention this to left-leaners, middle-minded, or even far-out-ocrats, we had better have our facts straight about lead-poisoning, and lead-exposure to children - and be willing to acknowledge the full spectrum of effects of decisions like these.  Failling to care about - or even denying that this plant had serious health consequences for the families in that town makes us look like: 1) morons 2) morons who don't give a crap about children, and 3) morons who are self-obsessed over our own (seemingly narrow) concerns.     People do not look to #s 1, 2, & 3 for leadership or influence.
  10. Looks like you already took donations for "lunch money".  Ha!   Congrats, and if you are ever in West Nashville, I'll gladly buy you a PBJ at the Casa De Peace.
  11. ok, I seem to be rusty in my understanding of TN code since it's been about 4 years since I studied the mess out of it.   Question: in plain english, is it correct to say that you may carry a loaded (empty chamber) long rifle in your vehicle if you have a valid TN CHP, but you may not carry the rifle in that condition on your person outside of the vehicle?   If that is the case, I had gone soft and fuzzy thinking you could posses (with a valid TN CHP) a long gun on you rperson with a full mag but empty chamber.     Do I think it should be legal to carry a long gun? yes.  Would I be wary of anyone I saw doing it in an urban setting? you bet.     If I see someone doing anything with firearms that defies common sense, my alert level goes up.
  12. Cumberland Heights has a great reputation, ... and a beautiful setting may help everyone a bit.
  13. 2 on the way.  Nothing like the last minute.  Reeeeeally wanted to order matching uppers and BCG's, ... but some restraint was in order.
  14. sorry to hear that.  I know the chances are not good, but I hope they get caught and you get every single item back.
  15. to the OP, peejman is right, ask questions, and then ask some more.  It is great that you are seeking answers.   Stay safe.
  16.   "... but a 22 will kill the crap out of you."   :bowrofl:   -there were a couple of other epic one liners, but I'll leave them for someone else.   ... in all fairness, I highly doubt I could hit the broad side of a mountain with 22LR from 450 yds.
  17. MCSC is outside of Clarksville.  It is laid back (everytime I've gone), RSOs are friendly, competent, and ...well, just right.  I've never been there when it was what I would call crowded, but it is a haul from Nashville.

  20. Welcome! Have ya' got the "4 laws" ingrained in your mind, body, and soul yet? ... glad you are here. I have learned an incredible amount from these fine folks on TGO; I'm sure you will as well.
  21. I said it in the related thread.  Sally Jewell is the Secretary of the Interior.  She is also the former (resigned upon appointment by Obama) CEO of REI.  If she does not come out and make some kind of apology statement, I am finished shopping at REI.   There is no excuse for this - just resign the post, but don't oversee this kind of disgrace.
  22. Sally Jewel, CEO of REI is the Secretary of the Interior.    Pass the word!      Unless something comes out that says her hands were tied on this, it looks like our days of buying from REI are over, over, over.   Oddly, this is a link to the REI blog as we faced a parks closure in 2011 (wasn't that on Obama's watch, too?)   http://www.rei.com/share/rei-blog/2011/04/national_parks_anda.html   I quote: This could qualify as America's Worst Idea: The National Park Service, due to an impending government shutdown, is preparing to lock the gates, literally, and block public access from the country's greatest natural and historic treasures.
