  1.      We ran a lot of events for kids when I worked in the church.  I guess Eagle Scout-ed-ness runs hard in my family.  I always sought to see every way a person might be injured and worked to mitigate as much as possible.  -always been concerned about inflatables in high-ish wind conditions - and took precautions to prevent any such incidents.  stake down, stake down, stake down.  If that doesn't feel right, take down.   - BTW - the lighter-weight "consumer" models are much more prone to this than the large, heavy rubberized canvas commercial houses.. - not sure which one this was...   ... but 50mph winds..??  no. no.   -hope the kids recover to live wonderful lives.
  2. In the late 70s or early 80s, my grandad's Ford station wagon kicked out of park on the boat ramp. Boat was still attached to the trailer.   My grandad told his newly married daughter-in-law to stay in the boat so that he could hand her stuff out of the wagon as it was going down. It started to take the nose of the boat down, so he cut it free (always, always have a sharp knife on your person!), and the wagon and trailer sunk to the bottom of the Tennessee River.   Both were later retrieved by a team of divers and a team of tow trucks - it was a hilarious sight as hard hats started floating to the surface when they flipped the car back over. And yes, ... Even the cliche fish draining out of the doors as they pulled the car up out of the water.   It was the last Ford anyone in our family ever bought.
  3. Thanks all - I took 1 pain pill yesterday right at noon.  That was enough for me - unless I hit it again while it is broken.   My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I cannot stand feeling "out of it".   -My only concern remains circulation.. and keeping infection from setting in.  Barring that, I'm good.
  4.   Agreed,   My only concern was that it was tight as a drum, numb at the tip, and cool to the touch (as opposed to all of my other fingertips - which were warm).  I didn't want to loose a thumb to infection or necrosis if somehow circulation had been compromised.     Dolomite!  Holy digital carnage!  "got sucked into a router"... I would bet there is more to that story.  lol.  :)
  5. installing oak stair treads... I was setting the tread with a hammer and block of pine....  for some inexplicable reason, I quit paying attention as I was drifting the block across the tread.  hammer-thumb-oak sandwich.
  6. 1st rule of deadly conflict:  Avoid it if you can.  (Avoid, Evade, Escape, Engage)  It's easier to survive if you don't place yourself in the path of bullets or bludgeoning trophies.   -If an intruder is approaching (or in the room with) my loved ones in our home, then the deadly conflict has already begun.  It can no longer be avoided.   -If an intruder is in the house, but isolated from myself and loved ones, and we have an exit, we will make a "tactical" retreat and observe from cover.   - might not suite everyone, but I am comfortable with it.
  7. :pleased: nah, no tears, just felt really, really stupid.  I just thought I smacked it pretty good until later in the evening.  It does feel (and look) that big.
  8. Yesterday.  ... glad I finished the project I was on, because I am worthless today.  -Wasn't even hammering a nail...   I would post the x-ray, but I don't have web-hosting for images anywhere... crushed into pieces right at the tip.   Anyone else ever do this?  I didn't sleep at all last night - pain kept me awake. ... went to the clinic this morning, and after x-rays, they told me I should make an appt. with an ortho.   Black all over, swollen tight as a drum and numb at the tip.   aaaargh!!!
  9. Not sure about the ladies in the video... That is not safe. As for Townsend, asphalt generally compresses a bit more than concrete, so distance runners may use it to avoid shin splints & foot injuries. It is not safe to ride a road bike @ speed on any sidewalk. ...they are for walking.
  10. Cleared out 180' long by 10' wide of privet and honeysuckle bush the last 3 days - all on our creek.  So yesterday afternoon I sat down in the shade listening to the water run in the creek; I was blown away by the number of bird calls I heard as I sat there in silence.  .. blood pressure drops, mind rests, and life feels balanced and right.
  11. Lumberjack, if you will:   1) Please let us know when you move... if there aren't moving trucks and paid folks involved, some of us will be glad to help out if we can.   2) Let us know when you get to town and have the headroom for dinner out.   Let's have a smallish meet up at one of the great restaurants around town - be it sushi or hot chicken - or Gabby's Burgers and Fries.
  12. 1) buy a fender blues junior, used... even in "non-pristine" shape, they are decent, decent all-tube amps. - and better starting points than most of the junk in that market.  ** you may rather have a small, used marshall, but I don't think you will touch the tone quality of the Blues Junior for anywhere near the price. USED Fender "Blues Junior".. not a "blues junior II" or "blues junior III"     2) If you want fuzz, buy a used fuzz pedal... if you are just messin' around, it won't matter much which one - someone else will be able to point you in the right direction.   3) Keep it simple, and keep your cables as short as you can (shortest total length - if (2) 6' cables will work for you, use 6's instead of 10's or 12's.     *** if you live in an apartment,... hmm.. a tube amp may not be viable.  They make tone with high voltage -and generally convert that voltage to amplitude... which means even the small tube amps are loud.  - as they should be.   :)
  13.   ... and you were miraculously able to stop at just one cup!?    From the sound of how good it was, I think I would've been a jittery mess all day after four or five.   Congrats on the coffee-gear and great cup of coffee.  I can't wait for the morning now....
  14.          Agreed about the burr grinder.  I didn't want to geek-scare anyone.  Even storing beans in a vacuum container and grinding them right before brewing, I can still taste the beans going south after about 5 days.   I buy my coffee at WholePaycheck Green Hills... or Roast on Eighth - since that is what I mostly drink.   ***Oh, and BigK... Just Love Coffee are actually solid roasters!  "Whole Lotta Love" makes a good cup.          I'm pretty picky about ingesting hormone-mimicking chemicals... so in our house, we try to keep plastics and hot water from ever meeting.  That limits what I can use to boil & brew.  I like the aeropress idea... but even without BPA... anything plastic is some kind of petrochemical (like most of our medicines), and it will most likely be leaching something in to your water when it gets hot.        A good french press with no plastic parts is cheap and will last a long, long time.   Though,... if you think a nice artful pour-over brewing would be fun, try a Chemex out!  again.   smoooooooth.   :)
  15. I'm a Chemex guy.  Grind right before I brew... boil the water in a sauce pan and pour with a pyrex.  ... No need to buy a grinder right away...you can grind at the store where you buy it...     - fairly coarse grind in the chemex brings wonderful things.  smoooooooooth.  no beeps.  no plastics - takes maybe 10 minutes... (that includes doing other things while the water boils).  I like the ritual in the morning... it is calming - if a bit artful.   I still drink Starbucks coffee, black - when I have a meeting there (worst coffee in town), but the Chemex and grinder have turned me into a coffee snob.       Good luck with your journeys.
  16. You think the aid that set that presser up is taking a step up the ladder this week? ... or down.  :)
  17. http://landing.newsinc.com/shared/video.html?vcid=25822372&freewheel=90051&sitesection=nydailynews   ...like it is off an episode of "VEEP".
  18. Someone's finding threads in their fish tacos?   Heinous.   What restaurant?
  19. As far as "nutjob", I am not, in the least, concerned about our service members performing their duties.  ... not in the least.  Given sufficient information, I might have a citizen's concern with politicians' and generals' decisions.   I have no such criticism of any boots on the ground.  Period.     I was more referring to the faith aspect... as viewed from an outsider's perspective, it can be jolting.
  20. I forgot about that!!  I felt sorry for everybody involved when I read that!!  :)
  21. In our community, some folks may differ from others in experience and opinion.  Even with differences, I am pretty sure that we all wish the best for each other's families and loved ones...  so while we "talk", let's remember that.    Alright,... is there anything we can learn here?      http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2014/apr/17/christ-and-self-defense-police-officer-lays-out-bi/     It does seem that the author of the article is either clueless or wanted to make this guy seem like a Class-A nut job.  *edit:  or maybe the guy is just what is represented... maybe I'm the nut job.   :pleased:   One of my first thoughts is... if this guy was a helicopter pilot for only 3 years in the army.... Uncle Sam didn't make his money back on this one.  Don't we like to keep officers in longer than that?     -peace
  22. so so sorry for the families of those involved.  lots of love and positive vibes sent their way.   Any of us affected?  If we know any of the families, we could start a takethemameal.com page.
  23. When the prices for common calibers are what they are at WM, you can take away the 3 box limit without fear of running out of stock... sheesh.
  24. I have not seen much of the show ... and I have not read the books ... or heard from anyone who has, but I say the mom killed the kid.  Addictive lust for power is a nasty thing to have inside... she seems to have it in spades.
