  3. This one? Its one of my favorites.
  4. I'm married with kids. It's very rare that there's anything of value in my wallet.
  5. It's very much the haves, and the have nots.
  6. And Alcoa/Arconic, and ORNL, and Siemens, and Clayton, and Kimberly Clark, and Tennova, and Covenant Health, and.... Heck, even Walmart is competitive at the $12/hr they were targeting.
  7. Have you been to Daytona lately? Its all tourism based service work. There's very little industry there.
  8. As an actual mechanical engineer, I approve this message Though you must also consider the constraints the engineers work to with regard to cost, packaging, time line, supplier, etc.
  9. Exactly. A used car a couple a couple years old costs nearly the same as a new car these days. If you're at the point of making payments anyway, may as well get a new one.
  10. Yes, the hassles that come with dealing with Craigslist people have pushed many to just trade-in instead.

    Retirement?

This is a great point, and a significant issue for those uninsured. One of the biggest benefits of medical insurance is their negotiated rates for various services. As an example, I had hernia surgery several years ago. One of the line items on the bill that I recall was something generic like "surgical equipment fee" $8000. My insurance's negotiated rate for that item was $200. So an uninsured person gets stuck with $8000 while the benefit of my insurance was a 40x reduction in that cost. That's madness. Its quite certain that an uninsured person wouldn't end up paying $8000, but to me that illustrates a major problem in the industry. The only conclusion I can draw is theres some "creative accounting" going on behind the scenes.

    Retirement?

I'm not tied to my current job but I've been unable to find something better that doesn't involve way more hours. I certainly didnt expect that 20 years after a masters degree in engineering that I'd still be one of the minions. Those i know who've been promoted either work much more than I'm willing too, or were completely useless and got moved up so they could do less harm. I put in my share of 80+ hr weeks and its just not worth it. Some sort of side hustle would be nice, except i have to sleep some time. My kids are young and still want me around, that's more important to me than money. My wife currently homeschools our kids, 9 more years if they continue through high school.
  14. Frequency listing... https://www.radioreference.com/ As stated, you can't pick up trunked radio, which most public safety systems are. Theres apps for listening to trunked radio or you can use the internet. To really do much more than listen to NOAA, you need a license. One of the kids in my son's scout pack and his dad got radios and licenses. They chat periodically, though the only plus over a phone is not requiring cell service.

    Retirement?

I'm no longer permitted to "opt out" of my employer provided insurance plan. If my wife had a job that offered insurance, I cannot include her on my employer's plan. We could pick which plan we put the kids on, but a spouse cannot be included if they have an alternative available, no matter what it is. And you've highlighted one of the catch-22's that's inevitable in our system. The few are forced to pay for the many, kinda like only taxing the rich.

    Retirement?

Family of 4 on 1 paycheck that I'd argue hasn't changed in 20 years. I make twice as much now as I did when I started 20 years ago. But everything costs twice as much... food, gas, housing, its all doubled. So I make the same money now as I did before I had a family, and we spend every penny. I freely admit I paid a bit too much for my house, though its just your average suburban house. We have old used cars, one of which will have to be replaced in the next few years and I have no idea where that money will come from. My only toy is a $1200 motorcycle that i got after selling the $3500 motorcycle i had before I got married. I dont think we'll be on the street, but this notion of living the high life with your feet up by the pool just ain't gonna happen.

    Retirement?

What do you mean about the insurance plans? My employer offers what I consider a catastrophic (aka high deductible) plan that's virtually identical to what was on the Obama care market a few years ago, and a traditional PPO plan that's completely unaffordable. I pay more in insurance premiums every year than my parents did in their entire careers. The $1M target for retirement may work now, but it'll be $3-5M 25 years from now at the current rate. I've got a fair bit in my 401k now, but I expect to be about $2M short when I'm 70.

    Retirement?

Its got nothing to do with saving. You're average working stiff (me) simply cannot save enough to comfortably retire. Social security will be beer money, if anything, and Medicare.... who knows? If medical costs continue to rise, we're all screwed. I'm paying for my parents SS and Medicare, so the millennials are gonna pay for mine? Catastrophic coverage is all my $4B employer offers anymore. Just out of curiosity, I went through the Obama care website last year and found the coverage available there was virtually identical to what my employer offers. Coincidence?
  19. If Trump wins i expect a few major cities to burn. And that's fine with me, which I'm sure is a bad attitude, but that's what it is. Some folks gotta learn the hard way and I'm happy let them even if my tax dollars are likely to be spent in the clean up. If Biden wins I expect outrage and protests but less general mayhem. Regardless of who wins, the only ones who will profit are the lawyers as there's certain to be suits galore. My suburban area is largely republican, so I don't expect any significant issues. We started homeschooling the kids in 2018 so I expect no impact there. I expect to go to work everyday just like I have all year. We're already stocking up in preparation for the next round of virus panic that's sure to come so the election really isn't changing anything for us. I dont know what it was like here in the 60's, but I have a hard time believing the political climate and general feelings of unrest are not much worse now. Difficult times indeed.
  20. They moved part of their operation. They were making parts across the street from where I work. I guess those folks are likely out of a job. Its a business that employs a substantial number of people in a town that exists because of tourism. In today's climate, I'd presume Daytona gave him whatever he wanted to not move those jobs. Also, Maryville just finished a fancy new access road adjacent to the property he bought here. The city has started marketing property along that road, so I suspect he think he might make a few bucks if he can sell it before his balloon payment is due.
  21. https://www.wbir.com/article/news/local/ceo-gun-maker-no-longer-planning-to-build-blount-cty-plant/51-c761aa28-aaf9-42ca-988d-6cc24986ebca MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The founder and CEO of a gun manufacturing company now won't build a plant in Maryville. Three years ago SCCY Industries announced amid fanfare from the state plans to build a center in Big Springs Industrial Park that was to include its corporate offices and its primary manufacturing operations. CEO Joe Roebuck told 10News business conditions have since changed and he'll move the firm back to Florida.
  22. It's time for migration to start.
  23. What they said. Don't be in a hurry to part with them. I'm guessing this aunt and uncle didn't have any kids of their own? Personally, I think the reproductions are neat but have very little interest in "modern" muzzle loaders.
  24. I darn near always carry at church, though I haven't been in the building but twice in the last 6 months. Our church is split into 2 buildings across the street from each other. I know we employ one off duty LEO on Sundays, I do not know if there is formal security team or plan. A few church staff have walkie-talkies, but that's all I've seen. All exterior doors are supposed to be locked except those with greeters. Ive been a greeter on many occasions and have been told nothing other than to close the door when the service starts. The building I'm usually in is very old and virtually indefensible. It's been added onto several times, is 3 levels built into a hill, and there's way more exterior doors than could be covered, not to mention all the ground level windows. My guess is the staff thinks a police car sitting in the parking lot at the other building is a talisman that keeps the bad people away. That said, I do not know of any instances of security concerns. Oh yeah... there are a couple very good podcasts on shooters Nation regarding church security. https://www.shootersnation.com/podcast/017-church-safety-security-teams-with-us-navy-seal-william/
