  1. We've settled for every house we've bought. They've all got issues, but both times we got frustrated and just picked the one we thought was best. I'm not sure you'll even get exactly what you want having one built. My coworker who bought the $400k house is already changing floors and such. I helped my parents build their retirement home while I was in college and there's plenty of things they wish they'd done differently. A house is a project that's never done. It may be good enough at some point, but its never perfect. On a more positive note, another coworker just showed me a house he's going to look at today. Its decidedly stuck in the 70's, but appears to be functional with good bones. And its less than $100/sqft.
  2. That's more Joe's gig...
  3. Yeah, that's madness. We bought just before the 2008 slump. A bunch of years went by where I would've lost up to $50k had i needed to sell. One of my neighbors did lose about $40k, but they had no choice. I was glad to see prices finally come back to where i wouldn't lose my arse, but where it's gone is crazy. One of my coworkers just bought in a new development. He won't say what they paid, but its close to $400k. To me, that's crazy for a young couple wanting to start a family. They have no idea how expensive life is about to get. But back to the topic of your thread, I'd guess most people moving from further than a days drive aren't renting a U-haul to get here. A POD or similar would be much cheaper.
  4. Good luck finding a builder, they're booked years out and the cost of materials is climbing just like house prices. A fixer upper is your best value right now. We saw a house in our neighborhood get flipped recently. The price they got for it made my wife say "we should sell and move!" Yes dear, but then we have to buy back into this crazy market. "Oh."
  5. Yes, yes they were.
  6. Mount it with French cleats or like floating shelves. You could get some sort of conduit for the cables and paint it wall color. It'll be nearly invisible.
  7. You're not a cheapskate, you're frugal. I've also worn the Magellan brand with no complaints. I'm not super hard on clothes, but they last fine for me. I got a pair of Dickies for Christmas and they seem to be made well enough. At 1/4 the price of Duluth, I think they're a pretty good value. If I got the Duluth, I'd end up with perfectly good jeans covered in stains.
  8. The spit/snot/mucus/moisture is the carrier. Think of it like the VOC's in a spray paint can. The virus particles are stuck to and in the moisture and need it to survive. Without the moisture, they dry out and die quickly. The moisture helps the virus live long enough to be touched or inhaled by another host. And all masks are definitely not created equally. Most single ply cotton masks help a little, but not much more than sneezing into your elbow or shoulder. The 2 and 3 ply work better. Then into surgical masks and respirators that are yet more effective.
  9. My interpretation is the CDC didn't directly say that the recommended cycle count was too high. However, it very unlikely for an asymptomatic person to be a "super spreader" even with a positve test.
  10. My wife's family is from Scotland and minen is from Wales, so the wishes of royalty are equally trivial.
  11. My F-I-L got into genealogy a while back and found that William Wallace (the Braveheart guy) is their 16th great uncle, so apparently I'm obligated to not like you now.
  12. Doctors and researchers, no. The bean counters who run the business that employs them, possibly (Martin Shrekli, Heather Bresch, ). It's an argument against privately funded medical research. The .gov doesn't care about ROI.
  13. Yep.
  14. It seems fairly commonly known that the antibody test is woefully inaccurate from a statistical perspective. Only 70-80% based on this... https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/which-test-is-best-for-covid-19-2020081020734
  15. I did that with mine as well. Pretty easy and came out nice.
  16. I've got a CRKT Woods Chogan, its a handy camp sized axe. Not in the same category as Granfors, but functional for my needs.
  17. So when should we come over for the BBQ?
  18. Don't use Slime with aluminum wheels, it causes very rapid corrosion from the inside out. It's also a PITA to clean out of the wheel and makes the tire difficult to balance.
  19. After just replacing all my worn out quick connects, I've learned this..... https://toolguyd.com/quick-guide-to-air-line-couplers-plugs/ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085QLQX3R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RvB-FbSZR1SBG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
  20. Once I got an air compressor, i wondered what I did before. I have a small 1 gal Husky brand and a bigger 20 gal Harbor Freight one. The husky one is nice for topping stuff off, but its too small to air up a flat car on a single tank. The HF one is 10-12 years old. It blew the head gasket a few years ago, but was easy to fix. Its starting to wear out and has always leaked a little oil. I also have one of those 12V mini compressors in each vehicle. As mentioned, they're really slow, but better than walking.
  21. Agreed. And SCOTUS has addressed this fairly recently. I think it would take some very creative work to spin it in a different way.
  22. Several times in the past (pre metal detectors), the guard inspecting my wife's purse found her folder, palmed it, handed it to her, and quietly said "put this in your pocket please." Good to know they'll let smaller blades go. It's not like they have metal tableware in the restaurants...
  23. Same here. I couldn't justify it strictly on a financial basis, but it does protect against future cost increases and its one less thing i have to mess with.
