  1. Indeed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Tirpitz There's also an episode of "Drain the Oceans" that covers the Tirpitz. I'd forgotten it sank in very shallow water. And that whole series is really good.
  2. Yes and yes. It helps prevent the pipe from clogging up and it helps prevent the water coming out from eroding a hole in the ground. It spreads the flow out and gives a much greater area to absorb the water, just like a septic drain field. I have 2 downspouts on the other side of the house and my neighbor also has 2. I presume they terminate at the same point between our houses as there's 2 depressions about 6" deep and 3ft long in the grass on the property line straight out from both sides sets of downspouts.
  3. Perhaps it took that long for the German government to release it, or statute of limitations to run out. Sunken warships typically remain property of their government and are considered tombs.
  4. Water coming into the house is always fixed from the outside. Dry Loc is good stuff, but its secondary protection. Come to think of it, I had a similar problem with our house. It's on a crawlspace and there was no vapor barrier when we bought it. While installing the vapor barrier, I found one corner kinda mushy with just a little mold on the joists. The downspout on that corner was buried, but clogged and not done properly. I went out in the pouring rain and saw water pouring out up against the house. So I dug it up, unclogged the pipe, dug a big hole, filled it with gravel and put the end of the pipe in the hole. It was dry as a bone a month later, the mold was dead, and been fine for the last 13 years.
  5. I'd be more concerned about 2 legged predators than those. And I'd definitely want a double action, not a single action.
  6. Two stars on top, one on the bottom. The star closest to the pole should also be the highest.
  7. Its very good. I think their prices have gotten high, but its good stuff.
  8. They don't use block sealant on the outside (or don't use enough), they dont install French drains, they don't backfill with gravel, they don't get downspouts away from the house, and they don't grade properly... because all that takes time and money.
  9. Buddy's is ok. Their meat is good, both pork and chicken. I dont care for their sauce and their sides are mediocre. But the family pack is decent way to feed the kids.
  10. What they said. The mold test could be worthwhile, especially if you have allergies. Id be curious to know how long the downspout had been that way. As you're well aware, it's been a very wet winter.
  11. Welcome to TGO, eh. Chattanooga has fiber optic internet at a reasonable price from the electric utility.
  12. Heh, my wife wants all the farm critters except cows.
  13. Welcome to the dirty side.
  14. Double tap.
  15. This worked for my parents. It wasn't intentional on their part, but they happened to be at the pharmacy when they had a few doses available.
  16. We have 10 seed feeders and 3 suet feeders. It's been a 30lb bag of seed every 7-10 days lately. 1
  17. The hard part is convincing yourself that no time limit means no time limit. Go slow, relax between shots, take a couple deep breaths. You don't have to hit the x ring 20 times in a row, you have to hit the x ring once, 20 times.
  18. The utilities here did that after the big round of spring storms about 5 years ago. They've been much more proactive about keeping the trees cut back off the lines. Can't fix the idiots that crash into poles in the snow, but I think its definitely reduced outages.
  19. Finding a local fabricator who's willing to help is probably the best option. YouTube stuff can help as well. There's also folks here who might be able to answer questions...
  20. Instead of 35 deg and rain 6 days out of 7, I'll take snow every time.
  21. We're right on the edge of where heat pumps work acceptably in the winter. A well insulated house with good windows and a relatively new heat pump will be fine during a normal winter. When the polar vortex hits, heat pumps struggle so gas is the way to go. All else being equal, I'd choose gas heat. But newer dual fuel units are worth a thorough look.
  22. My parents have a dual fuel heat pump. The emergency heat is propane, they have an in-ground tank. Another point to note, most HVAC units will benefit from switching the air handler to "on" rather than auto. The HVAC works by moving air through the house, but a lot of units "on" time isn't enough to fully circulate the air. It can take several minutes for the unit to get the air moving, so short cycle times leave warm and cool spots in the house and the extra cycles increase wear on the system. You might think running the fan 24/7 will use more electricity, but our electric bill went down $40/mo in the summer due to more efficient operation. You also get cleaner interior air. Newer systems usually have 2 speed fans so the low speed runs all the time and it switches to high speed when heating or cooling.
  23. Let the emergency heat cycle on its own. Leaving the emergency on will wear out the bearings in your electric meter. Heat pumps are outside because they're noisy and you don't want the refrigerant in the house if it leaks. They do recirculate the interior air, but its trying to draw heat from the cold outside air.
  24. I got my wife one of those tabletop seed starter boxes for Christmas. She started a bunch of seeds today. Hopefully they'll sprout and the weather will cooperate when its time to move the seedlings outside.
  25. Perpendicular would be normal. Just because I'm the nerdy engineer type, I'd put some blocking between the joists about 4ft from the wall at a minimum. I put cross braces with 4x4's on concrete bases under my aquarium. A water bed has a footprint at least 4x bigger than a typical safe. That makes a big difference.
