  1. Apartments suck. Neighbors in a campus apt had a party so big, they sold t-shirts after the fact with the description from the campus police report to help pay the fines. After school, people above me had regular drunken domestic disputes and harbored a fugitive for a while. It's fun when the SWAT team knocks on your door at 11pm and tells you to stay inside. It really is funny when your neighbor opens his window and starts playing the "Cops" theme and you hear the SWAT guys hiding in the bushes laughing. I currently have two unpleasant neighbors in my subdivision. Neither are noisy or otherwise annoying, just exceptionally unfriendly. The other neighbors are very nice.
  2. Nah, they're lots of fun. Most of the time. A coworker with 2 in highschool and 2 in college made a very insightful observation in this regard..... "God made teenager's attitudes what they are so that it'll be easier for the parents to kick them out later."
  3. Dad spanked me several times (all deserved) with a big wooden paddle, I think I turned out ok. I've swatted my 2 yr old on his diaper for being especially belligerent a time or two. It gets his attention right quick and he immediately apologizes. The assistant principle at my middle school had a very, very effective method. Thankfully I don't know this from personal experience, but I witnessed it enough times to know I wanted no part of it. Deterrence works.... Mr. Gooden had an aluminum paddle with "speed holes" drilled in it hanging on his wall. If a paddling was deemed necessary, it went like this (boy or girl). He'd make you walk the halls and follow you around, paddle in hand, for several minutes. All the classroom doors were open so everyone knew what was about to happen. At some point he'd tell you to stop and assume "the position"... hands on knees with head a couple inches from the lockers. He'd wind up and let fly, the impact would make your head smack the lockers. You had to count licks. If you were blubbering too much to count, he kept going until you did. More than 3 licks was rare. It'd make even the toughest, studly-est football players cry. Then you'd have to walk back to class while stiffling and knowing that half the school had heard you crying.
  4. The Rain-X stuff works, or try some different style glasses. Look for some where the lenses don't touch your face, particularly across the top. The reason they fog is the heat and moisture from your face can't escape.
  5. My son turned 2 in Feb. We've got locks on all the cabinets and toilets. He loves playing with cell phones and screams bloody murder when we take one away. He also loves to play in the tub and I wonder a bit how much water damage is being done while he happily splashes water everywhere. I usually end up nearly as wet as he is. He loves to "help daddy" when I'm working on stuff. That typically involves grabbing my tools and running away laughing. Chase is his favorite game. Though I can tell he does actually like to help and is learning some simple instructions... which reminds me, we think he threw away my wife's watch. Fun stuff.
  6. You mean there's people besides Tiger playing? I assumed that everyone else would've conceded the title to him by now...
  7. All this sounds similar to my wife. I started her with my MKI (bull barrel, target grips) and she liked it. I'll brag and say she shot a 3" group at 7yds. Then I let her shoot my PT145 (probably a mistake). The HUGE difference in recoil shocked her (it nearly jumped out of her hand on the first shot), though I'll give her high marks for continuing and emptying the mag. On a later range trip, she was hesitant to shoot my P85, but liked it once she tried it. She hasn't really decided on a pistol for herself, but is leaning toward an XD9sc. Regarding the comments about difficulty racking the slide... you're not doing it right. The trick is to hold the slide stationary with (at least) the last 3 fingers of the left (non-shooting) hand and drive the gun forward hard and fast under it. It won't work if she does it slowly... it's got to be a fast, aggressive motion. Once I convinced my wife that she wouldn't hurt the gun and made a few other comments to get her fired up, she racked the slide on my PT145 with ease. At which point she said... "oh, that was easy." 8. From your other thread... Here's a good reference... Collecting and Shooting the SKS Carbine - Disassembly and Reassembly More to the point... http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/boltdisassemble/hs.asp
  9. A little googling tells me this is a fairly common problem. OE wood furniture or Tapco stuff? I'd just use a pair of needle-nose pliers to bend it back, but do so carefully. You'll likely have to disassemble the rifle to bend both ears. You may also use a small punch/drift to deepen the bosses on the ears. I think the lever should move freely once disengaged from the gas block. If it wobbles, you may need to re-buck the rivet to tighten it. Here's a good reference... 10. +1. I have to pry the level up on my yugo. Seems a little judicious bending is in order.
  11. He's shooting bees. Shooting grits or rice at mice would just attract more mice.
  12. My wife is also a habitual tailgater, drives me nuts. Let me know how the listening thing works out. As for my road story.... I saw a yeti on an isolated backroad in WNC. It was late in the day in the early fall with long shadows coming through the trees. I was riding my bike, headed toward home at a moderate pace down this twisty road I'd happened across. I recall coming around a sweeping left turn onto a short straight section when I saw something about 6 ft tall, with very long white fur that was matted and filthy standing in the middle of the road. I slowed to a stop about 200ft from it and sat there for a minute trying to figure out what I was looking at. I suspect it was doing the same thing as I was in my full power-ranger motorcycling garb. It turned and took a couple steps toward me. I considered a quick u-turn but my bike was in the left portion of the lane on this narrow road which meant I'd need at least a 3 pointer to turn around. My heart rate went up a notch or two. It paused for a long moment, then turned and headed off the road, down the hill into the brush to my left. I rode up to where it had been standing and looked around but didn't see anything. So I continued on toward home.
  13. I'm sure you could make one street legal, if you're willing to deal with all the red tape. There are a bunch of hurdles in the process.
  14. Sounds like you're making good progress. I used to live in Kingsport and the AT sections around Roan Mtn were my favorite place to hike.

    Silly Pirates

What I can't figure out is how there were prisoners to be captured? I'm sure something like a Javelin isn't cheap, but probably more cost effective in the long term.
  16. I have a Remington 552 Speedmaster (.22LR) and an 870 Wingmaster (12ga). Both are fun to shoot. The 552 is a bit picky with ammo, it doesn't like uncoated HP's. Anything jacketed or round nose works fine. It's got a cheap Simmons scope and plinks the steel reset targets at 100 yds all day. Since this will be your first rifle, the traditionalist in me says bolt action. But don't sweat that too much. If you find a good deal on one you like, buy it. My 870 only shoots 2-3/4 shells and they're plenty powerful. Shooting skeet, trap, and clays is fun if a bit expensive. You've gotta be fast to hit doubles with a pump gun (I'm not). 100 rds will leave a bruise the first time, but you'll get used to it if you shoot regularly. The 28" barrel is nearly useless for home defense. My advice is to get both. Every man should have at least one rifle and shotgun in the closet.
  17. Excellent story! Among other things, we'd light the plastic tip on a can of WD-40 and stick it under the stall door when someone was stinking up the place. A few missing eyebrows later, people learned what "courtesy flush" meant. We'd probably go to jail for that now too.
  18. Only 17%? Phooey. Mine went up 100% from last year.
  19. Care to enlighten the rest of us?
  20. Congrats! I have a 2 yr old. He's great (most of the time). Your life will change far more than you realize. Sleep now, you won't for about 2 months following the birth. If you think time flies now, just wait.
  21. +1. While very reliable, the subcompact Glocks don't fit my hand at all. The grip is too short and the angle is wrong for me. I'm also not a fan of the safety. Kahr's seem expensive for no apparent reason. You might also look at the M&P, PPS, or XD.
  22. Ditto to CK1.... I have a polymer framed, striker fired Taurus that did the same thing initially. I had to adjust my trigger pull motion a bit. I had to focus on using only the pad of my finger and pulling straight back (almost felt like pulling right at first). The change smoothed my pull noticably and made me a better shooter with my other pistols.
  23. The closed-system idea is very interesting. I'd like to see a schematic or something to better illustrate how it works.
