Thirty million foot/pounds of energy at the muzzle.
peejman replied to Will Carry's topic in General Chat
I get 283 million ft-lbs. E = 0.5*m*v^2 The 2500lb projectile is it's weight in lbf (pounds-force). This must be converted to mass. m = 2500lb / 32.2 ft/s^2 = 77.64 lb-s^2/ft (english unit of mass, or a slug). E = 0.5*77.64*(2700ft/s)^2 = 283,000,000 ft-lbs. -
As mentioned... TN Aquarium & IMAX, the Lookouts if you like baseball. The Creative Discovery Museum if you have kids, Hunter Art Museum if you don't. Choo-Choo, Incline Railway, and the Rail Road Museum are neat. I like Ruby Falls and Point Park. Rock City is neat, once. Chickamauga Battlefield for a little history. A cruise on the Riverboat. Cooldidge Park and the Riverwalk are nice. I like the Big River micro-brew, less than a block from the Aquarium. I believe they have a "sampler", so you get a small glass of each of their offerings. The Station House Resturant at the Choo-Choo has singing servers. If you'd like to impress your better half with an elegant meal, Dinner on the Diner Car is nice. Otherwise, there's lots of good places to eat around.

Thanks for the info. It seems that with equipment rental and such, paintball will be beyond our meager budget.

becoming comfortable with one chambered
peejman replied to 93civEJ1's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I wouldn't consider carrying without a round in the chamber. A gun without a round in the chamber is just an expensive hammer. That said, I do recall being somewhat paranoid about making sure the manual safety was on, but I got over that pretty quickly. Most any "modern" gun from a reputable manufacturer simply WILL NOT fire unless the trigger is pulled. The vast majority of the ND's you hear about either involve a DAU and/or a botched trigger job. -
This. Love my Yugo.

Mom had bulging/slipped disks many years ago (~25) before surgery was so common. At that time, the only real solution was LOTS of rest. She spent 3 months mostly in bed followed by years of chiropractors and physical therapy. She's still careful about what she does and I fuss at her regularly when I catch her doing something she shouldn't. She hasn't had any serious problems (other than over-exertion) in probably 10 years. That time frame doesn't paint a very happy picture, but if you keep doing the things that hurt it in the first place, it will only get worse.

My one and only dealing with DSA was less than spectacular. Their quality control and their customer service is very hit/miss. Based on comments on Falfiles, you might call back and try to speak with Nikki. She seems to do a reasonable job taking care of people.

I wondered the same thing... what does a vegan zombie eat? Tofudebrains?

The Hogue grip makes the P85 feel much better than the P95 IMO. Other differences are insignificant. I'll repeat my advice.... keep it. It's accurate and relatively cheap to shoot. I've also thought about selling mine and getting an XD, M&P, or something similar. However given my use of it, those guns only cost more. They don't actually do anything any better than the old workhorse.

I need recommendations for a place for about 25 nerdy engineers to shoot at one another in the general vicinity of Knoxville, Maryville, Sevierville, Vonore, etc. Personally, I prefer a "capture the flag" type game in the woods. Obviously we'll need to rent equipment.

This is why I carry..especailly at night
peejman replied to lock n' load's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I don't mean to suggest you should go down without a fight. By all means, fight. I sure as hell would. Just because they've got a gun drawn doesn't mean they know how to use it. I'm sure we've all seen folks who do well to hit a stationary target that's within arm's reach, much less a moving target 15 ft away. However in this particular case, the perp was headed out the door when this guy blunders in. I bet the perp was just as surprised as the guy he robbed. The 2nd guy totally unaware and simply a crime of opportunity. If he'd been 20 seconds later, all he would've seen is stunned employees. -
A friend has the polymer RAMI .40 as his CCW. He's had it for several years, shoots fairly regularly and AFAIK, it's been flawless.

Gunsmith near Cleveland / Chattanooga ?
peejman replied to Wingshooter's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Ditto. -
Heh, I'm way cheaper than you guys. I EDC this. 1 AAA battery, plenty of light for all the usual stuff. Wish it had a push button, but for $3 at walmart I certainly can't complain.

*sigh* If only they could figure out a way to make it more confusing.

P3AT extractor & firing pin question
peejman replied to peejman's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Thanks for the info. It was exactly as described, the firing pin moved when I took the Frankenbolt out and I didn't pay attention when I put it back together the first time. Thankfully I didn't bend it when I reinstalled it incorrectly. I did clean it (wasn't really dirty to begin with) and I put a little shine on the feed ramp while I was at it. It appears to be working normally, though I'll have to go back to the range to verify. I did dry fire it a few times before I read that you're not supposed to (which seems odd). Nothing appeared to be damaged or worn. -
We went to the zoo this weekend and had a good time. The cloudy and cool (for mid-July) weather was nice and most of the animals were out. There are several new enclosures under construction. My 3 yr old loved the kiddie area. I didn't see any postings, but as had already been made clear, there don't have to be any.

Source for railroad ties near Knoxville?
peejman replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
TSC or the farmers co-op might have them, though I doubt you'll find them for less than $9ea. FWIW, the salvaged ties are generally in poor shape. Plan to do a lot of sorting to find decent ones. I wouldn't use them to build anything that required significant structure (ie, a retaining wall). New ties are available, but VERY expensive. Last I looked, the co-op here has pieces of telephone poles in various size/lengths. -
P3AT extractor & firing pin question
peejman replied to peejman's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
It appears that's already been done to this one. I did find a few high spots in unimportant places that I'll smooth out, but otherwise it looks pretty good. -
A little healthy debate is a good thing. Gets people's juices flowing, get's their brain working. As stated however, some topics are quite polarizing. The above is why I tend to avoid that type of thread in the first place. Generally when threads are closed, the closing moderator gives an explanation why in the final post. I would expect that if a thread got deleted the OP would get a PM explaining why, whether the reason is obvious or not. I'd expect other folks who pushed it in the wrong direction would also get an explanation via PM. Just seems like the courteous thing to do. Personally, I think this forum is well regulated.

*sigh* I miss airshows.

So I finally took my P3AT to the range yesterday. While plenty accurate and easy enough to shoot, it suffered numerous failures to extract. When I got home, google kindly informed me that the likely cause was the extractor screw being a bit loose. Sure enough, I was able to tighten it about 1/8 turn. So I took it all the way out, cleaned everything, put a dot of blue loctite on the screw, and tightened it down. When I put it back together, something wasn't right. The slide would go fully to the rear, but wouldn't come all the way back to battery. I noticed an interference problem between the hammer and firing pin, and noticed that the firing pin seemed locked up tight and a tad crooked. Further googling this morning informed me that the extractor screw also retains the firing pin. So in bottoming out the extractor screw, I've locked up (and possibly bent) the firing pin. I've also learned that the firing pin must go in a particular way. Shame on me for not reading up on it before I started messing with it. So.... for proper function of the extractor, the retaining screw must be tight. Yet when its tight, it locks up the firing pin. That tells me the screw is too long. Easy enough to file a little off the screw until it can be tight for extractor function yet not lock up the firing pin. Someone tell me why shortening the retaining screw is a bad idea. I've further discovered that, if I booger it up (or have already), replacement parts are quite inexpensive direct from Keltec.

My back order was a color problem. They had all the colors in stock except the one I wanted. I did some shopping around and no one had that color in stock at the time. That's typical for me... I always find the slowest check-out line in the grocery store, every traffic light turns red just before I get to it... Post up some pics and a review when you get it.

Our ancestors didn't have to deal with the "heat island" effect of our roads, buildings, etc. They had creeks to play in through the heat of the day. They got up at 4am and were done by 2pm. And since there was no air conditioning, they just got used to the heat. My little one has a nasty case of eczema, the heat makes it worse. It's been pretty frustrating feeling somewhat home-bound because we don't want to take him out in the heat. Even his older brother (who loves playing outside) walked out on our screen porch in the afternoon, piddled around for a minute or two and said "Daddy, lets go back inside. It's hot out here."
