A coworker just got back from a trip to his homeland - England. While there, he happened across something a relative had dried flowers in.... a 105mm howitzer shell. Somewhat surprisingly, it made it back in his luggage (through Chicago of all places) unmolested. He said the same relative also has a 8" shell casing, but he didn't think bringing both back together would be such a good idea.

Why? Availability of information. Google can find all I need to know about most any gun in a couple minutes. While I don't have a "smart phone", most people do and can look up things on the spot. It's easy to find a fair price for just about anything, hence you rarely see used guns at absurdly low prices. At the same time, there's a sucker born every minute. Seems a number of dealers still wish to take advantage of those folks and price things way too high. They've made lucrative careers off other people's ignorance. I don't really fault them for that, they are in the business of making money and with information so readily available, you'd have to be a fool to pay such high prices. And we all know, a fool and his money are soon parted.

I consider it motivation to not get (more) fat.

If it's been "bubba'd" then I'd be inclined to restore the whole gun to "as issued" condition. No sense just doing the metal. Though, as Mike mentioned, I'd do my homework first.

I have a stash of crappy pocket knives that will work for that. Mostly I intend this for kitchen knives. I have several high quality knives but they've simply gotten dull with years of use.

This. The store will gladly trade a couple hundred dollars in merchandise for not having to use their attorneys. There have been plenty of lawsuits filed and won by thieves who were injured when tackled in the parking lot. So... steal a $200 saw, get banged up when they tackle you outside the store, sue, and cash a $200,000 check. Winner! You have to remember.... we have a legal system, not a justice system.

They have contacted TWRA about getting a nuisance permit. TWRA has been slow to respond. My folks have 12.5 acres that borders about 40 acres of TWRA property. I'd assume that most municipalities have leash laws. It's clear how well they're both enforced and obeyed. I'd also agree that the deer in photos was sick. I can't imagine that a dog could catch a healthy deer in the woods, much less bring it down.

My dog loves to chase deer, but she's never actually caught one. Even if she did catch one, I doubt she'd know what to do with it. She's had several interesting adventures while in chase. The fastest I've ever seen her run was chasing down a nice sized doe across a 5 acre mowed field. She got to within about 20 ft of it, but the deer jumped a fence at the edge of the property and disappeared into shoulder high grass. I feel sure that these dogs are what I'd consider "semi-wild" in that while they may have collars, they're certainly not house pets. We had an unpleasant encounter with some when I was a kid at a Christmas tree farm. We were picking out a tree and several "farm dogs" got after someone else's pet. We snatched up our dog and jumped in the bed of the truck. I recall several men (Dad included) running around with shovels and axes trying to fend them off. The pet they were after ended up hiding out under our truck. A couple got whacked with shovels while trying to get it and finally ran off. An exciting few moments for sure. We got our Christmas tree somewhere else the next year. If one was causing problems on my property, I'd dispatch it. Out hunting somewhere that's not my land...? I guess I'd watch the show.

Since you brought it up... the rotational energy of a bullet is much less than it's translational energy, hence it's typically neglected. For a 7.62mm, 123gr bullet traveling 2400 ft/s while spinning at 250,000rpm: Translational KE = 0.5*m*V^2 = 1571 ft-lbs. Rotational KE = 0.5*I*w^2 I = mass moment of inertia, approximating a bullet as a cylinder = 0.5*m*r^2 Combining, Rotational KE = 0.25*m*r^2*w^2 = 15 ft-lbs. Thus the translational KE is 99% of the total.

I pocket carry a P3AT in Desantis Nemesis holster. As stated, accuracy is key. Hits to the thoracic cavity will stop anyone. Mine has proven to be minute-of-paper-plate accurate fired relatively quickly, one-handed, inside about 10 yds. That's good enough for me. Is .380 the ideal defense caliber? Clearly no, but it sure hits harder than my knuckles. There's several stories of cops being killed by a .22 while wearing body armor, as well as perps who needed 10+ hits from a .45 to go down.

Truth. KE = 0.5*m*V^2 It takes 8x more mass to get the same energy as doubling the velocity. I've always wanted an AK and thought I wanted one in 7.62 just to stay common with my SKS. This thread has gone a long way toward convincing me otherwise.
