  1. Keep in mind that when you modify it from the original configuration, an SKS requires 8 US made components for 922® compliance. That said, looks pretty cool.
  2. Sevier Indoor Range is excellent. You can shoot skeet/trap here on weekends... http://www.gatlinburgsportsman.com/
  3. Welcome!
  4. Just finished Raise the Titanic by Cussler. Like all the Dirk Pitt books, its not a literary masterpiece but some good mindless entertainment/escapism, which is exactly the point for me. I enjoy reading but don't have much time for it. My wife is a voracious reader. She's currently working her way through the Jeff Shaara civil war trilogy.
  5. I had a similar PGA experience in college. I would say no, PGA is still much stronger than any vodka I've ever seen. That last 50-ish proof really makes a difference. I can't say what the threshold is, but you're average 80 proof whatever will burn quite readily. So in that regard, PGA is no more flammable than anything else.
  6. That looks great. One hint I've found when using rattle can stuff... Resist the temptation to fiddle with it after painting. Leave it alone and let it dry for a day or two before handling it.
  7. Being one who used to design springs... spring design is as much art as science. There's a lot of variables. Some springs can be designed for "infinite" life, sometimes its physically not possible. It depends mainly on the geometry of the spring, how it's cycled, and what it's made of. Simply leaving a spring compressed can damage it, but that's rare. The vast majority of spring damage occurs from over-compression. That's why you find bump stops in some magazines that only let the follower go down so far. If you remove the spring and mash it flat... you may have ruined it, though it might not appear any different. That said, leaving a magazine from any sort of modern firearm fully loaded for a very long time will not damage the spring as long as it's protected from corrosion.
  8. I understand what you're saying, but according to the families that wasn't the point...
  9. IWB carry of an average sized pistol typically requires pants about 2" bigger in the waist to make room for the gun. If you're trying to stuff the glock in pants that are already snug... it'll get uncomfortable pretty quick. There's a wide variety of tuck-able IWB holsters. All kydex, kydex/leather, all leather. The prices vary as much as the styles. I strongly recommend against small-of-back (SOB) carry. Slip and fall on the gun one time and you'll know why. That said, I carry a PT145 in a crossbreed supertuck at 4:00-ish. I'm not a big person and it conceals fine.
  10. I've used the same 5 stripper clips for my SKS for years. If you don't have a bunch of magazines, it's certainly easier to keep the stripper clips full for faster mag reloads.
  11. If contained in well sealed glass bottles kept somewhere cool and out of sunlight.... booze of reasonable potency will keep a long, long time. Besides, when it comes down to using it for it's intended purpose, people won't care how it tastes. I'd get the cheapest stuff I could find that's packaged adequately. It's useful for a lot more than just a buzz.
  12. Wow. That's quite a collection.
  13. While I find it interesting, I'm not much of an astronomer. You may or may not be aware of this... http://orionastronomy.wordpress.com/
  14. Welcome!
  15. I'm not in there very often, but have always found deals on their clearance racks. Mostly, it's just stuff that's out of season and as you said, typically about 50% off.
  16. That's a HUGE bullet! Reminds me of pics I've seen of some wildcat caliber where the bullet appears bigger than the brass. I'm curious to see how it works.
  17. Looks great! Excellent use of a template to keep it square and straight. So many people make stuff like this that comes out distorted because they can't be bothered with the extra 10 minutes to make the template .
  18. My understanding of LifeLock's $1M guarantee is that they'll spend up to $1M fixing things. They don't pay you because someone stole your credit card number.
  19. The spray-on bedliner episode was amazing. I was really impressed.
  20. The wood won't ruin the meat unless it's got fungus or mold in it. Some folks claim to tell a difference based on the type of wood, I really can't. Maybe if it's a wood fired smoker, but when just using it to smoke over charcoal... nah. I also have a charcoal smoker and have used hickory, oak, cherry, pecan, mesquite, apple, maple, and probably a few others. The biggest difference to me is how fast the wood burns up and hence how frequently I have to tend to it. So far, pecan is my favorite... smokes for hours. This is making me hungry. I've got a pork loin in the freezer and the weather is supposed to be decent this weekend. hmmmm....
  21. Good to know. As I said, Big Brother has blocked the videos and I haven't remembered to watch them at home yet. Agreed... I like the above ground, inside the house version best... though planning for it in a new construction sure would make things easier than trying to install one later. As for being safe living on a ridge... a friend lived way up on the side of a hill. Several years ago a hurricane remnant passed through and we got several inches of rain in a day. The 8-12 ft high retaining wall around the side of his driveway collapsed and he ended up with 1-2 ft of mud in his garage. His insurance company called it flood damage and refused to cover it.
  22. No sweat on cutting through the concrete to install it. There shouldn't be any structural load on the floor in the middle of the garage. The hole is far enough from walls that connect to the floor. My concern there would be back fill and drainage. They'll dig a hole for it, which necessarily will be bigger than the box. Then they've gotta back fill and around it with something and compact it, else the dirt will slowly fall down and fill it up, out from under the slab. Any decent contractor should know that... I'd assume these folks do as well. There may be some plumbing in the floor. If you've got a plumbing layout from the construction process, that will tell you. Assuming the plumber actually put the pipes where the drawing said to.
  23. Depends on what kind of smoker you have.... charcoal, wood, gas, or electric? If it's charcoal or gas, it's ok to burn it green... it makes more smoke that way. If wood, I'd mix a couple green in with the dry. If electric... I've no idea. If you want to burn it in a wood stove (like for home heat), let it dry for at least 6 months. As for the best meat... anything... pork, beef, venison, chicken, turkey... whatever. The type of wood is a small factor, IMO.
