I spoke with a guy who's an NRA Highpower national match competitor. He goes to Camp Perry every year and shoots way more than most people, well over 1000 rds per year through his NM AR. He decided to put all this cleaning stuff to the test. He said he cleaned the rifle thoroughly on Jan 1 and didn't clean it again until he following Jan 1. The only thing he noticed was how much time and money he saved not cleaning it 50+ times in a year. No change in accuracy. I figure if anyone would notice a change, a NM competitor would.

Supercavitating Underwater Bullets - AMAZING!!!
peejman replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Cavitation is simply boiling water. The motion of the prop creates some very high and very low pressure areas. When the pressure in the low pressure areas drops below the vapor pressure, a bubble forms. When the bubble moves to a higher pressure area, it collapses. The pressure wave caused by the collapse is what does the damage. It's similar to a clap of thunder. You can do it with your hand in a swimming pool. Stick your arm in the water at least to the elbow and shake/rub to remove any bubbles that may be stuck on your hand. Hold your hand flat, fingers together and push your hand through the water as fast as you can. You'll see bubbles form. In essence, that's cavitation. -
Can't carry (or even keep it in the car) at work. When I'm out with my family, always. When it's just me, sometimes.

Someone here has (had?) a .308 16" Saiga that I got to shoot. It was shatteringly loud and blew a 12" long fireball out of the muzzle. It was freakin' awesome! That said, I'd probably get the 20" just for accuracy.

I look at it. If it's just dirty, I don't clean it. If it's got noticeable build-up, I'll spray it with CLP and reevaluate. If it's still cruddy, I'll run a few solvent patches through it and check it again. Only if there's still noticeable fouling do I break out the brushes and really scrub it. Experience says it takes hundreds of rounds for it to get that dirty. Once it's clean to my satisfaction, I'll run an oiled patch through it. I'm a firm believer that more guns get worn out from obsessive cleaning than obsessive shooting.

Nice. Does standard AK furniture fit those? While the wood is pretty, not sure I could deal with that stock.

Saw on Sportcenter this morning that they've lifted the lock-out and the ref's are reviewing a new deal. Supposed to be "real" ref's in the game tonite with the full crews back for the weekend, if they agree to the deal.

Good stuff. Excellent that you're teaching your daughter these things, you never know how far she may go with it. When my wife and I were dating, she was similar to your wife. As part of her "education", I made her change the oil and change a tire in the parking lot at school. She wasn't happy with me at the time, but thanked me later. Maybe your daughter can get Mom more interested.

My wife has worked with a few different birds while volunteering over the past few years. They're really magnificent creatures, though they're fairly high maintenance. She hasn't done the hunting aspect, just general care and public education. I think she knows one person that owns a falcon, but I'm not entirely sure.

I think the contact immunity thing only works if you stay in contact, as the viruses continue to change. And individuals have very different immune systems. To illustrate... Mom was a teacher for a long time. At first, she was sick all the time. Over time, her immunity built up and she rarely had more than the sniffles. Now that she's been retired for a few years, she gets sick much more often. My wife rarely gets sick. When she does, it's just the sniffles for a few days. When I get sick, it hits me like a hammer... massive congestion, in bed for a day or two, sinus infections, 2 week recovery. Our older son seems to have gotten my immune system... colds hit him pretty hard, lots of congestion, cough, etc. Our younger son seems to have gotten my wife's immune system... he's sniffly for a few days and that's about it. That said, we typically get the flu shot. The folks that say the flu shot is bad for you rarely produce any real data to support their claim. They use scary words like mercury, aluminum, and ethlyene glycol, but never say how much or why that's bad. We've never had any sort of adverse reaction to it, but some people do.

I got one on sale for $40 at JCPenny's a couple years ago. It's more a "field coat" style than mechanic's style, but it's held up quite well. As for online stuff... can't go wrong with Carhart, Cabela's, LLBean, Landsend, ... Having just looked, Cabela's has some pretty good stuff on sale. If I needed one, I get this without hesitation.

I'm not allowed to post pictures, but I work at a place that fixes these.... I use stuff that looks like these... I have a friend that works with you...

Hookers and blow.

I find it amusing. They (player, ref's, commentators, NFL employees, etc.) go on and on about how it's about love for the game. Except when it's about money. When money is on the line, they'll gladly screw anyone and everyone for a few extra $$. It's also really nice to see these grown men who like to present themselves as professionals (the players & coaches) acting like a bunch of 6th graders in a sand lot game. The scuffles, the trash talk.... nice professionalism.

A basic hand tool kit. Stuff is gonna break, be ready to fix it.

Passed HCP class and range qualification
peejman replied to mj12's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Congrats and good shooting. My wife took (and passed) her class saturday as well. I took the class in February at an outdoor range. The pistol portion of the range was back in a 'holler' and it was 29 deg with no direct sun. We had to leave all our stuff in the car during the classroom portion so everything cold soaked. Cold steel on a cold day. Brrrr... -
As mentioned, the mini-gun from Predator. The Shotgun in the first Expendables. Yes, excellent books. I liked the movie too.

Look what hatched out of our woodchip pile..
peejman replied to Dolomite`s Breezy's topic in General Chat
I had a box turtle as an unofficial pet when I was a kid. Found him in the back yard (big-ish wooded area behind our house) and named him Henry. Fed him veggie table scraps, crickets, and worms. He hung around the whole summer but disappeared for the winter. I found him again the next spring and decided to paint an "H" on his shell to make sure it really was the same turtle. Again, he hung around through the summer and disappeared in the winter. Didn't come back the next spring. A few years later, I found his shell while playing in the woods. -
Welcome. And you might want to change that to "no caliber too big".

Texas mom arrested for letting her children play outside
peejman replied to daddyo's topic in General Chat
If they were playing in the street on a busy street I can certainly see the cop giving her a lecture, but arresting her? There must be more to the story. My kids are 4 and 2 and they play outside while I'm working in the garage/yard. I do not have eyes on them every second. My ears give me a good idea of where they are and what they're doing. I do check on them frequently. The older one knows to stay in the yard (and does, for the most part) and the younger one just follows his big brother around. I only worry when it gets quiet. -
thigh holster, anyone use one?
peejman replied to rockman6's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Maybe if you wear those nifty velcro seamed warm-up pants like basketball players (or strippers) do... -
Interesting. Seems that this instance and another instance linked within indicate this is mostly a concern if you open carry. If you concealed carry, you'd have to move the garment out of the way to reholster, greatly reducing the chances of the drawstring doodad getting caught. Assuming this is your outer (cover) garment.

Good stuff. My 4 yr old wears a kid sized backpack when we go hiking. Either it's empty or has his kiddie binoculars in it. I don't want him to get tired carrying any real weight. He enjoys the novelty of it. I look forward to teaching him more stuff as he gets a little older.
