We are looking for a good engineering program and he prefers to go out west
BSME & MSME here. They have an excellent engineering program. Other than perhaps Vanderbilt, best in the state IMO. What kind of engineering?
I don't know if I'll have have good feelings about Cookville...I seem to recall that the police like to shoot family pet dogs at erroneous traffic stops.
Yep, that happens daily.

Thanks for the advice. I was into RC cars some 25 years ago and was shocked yesterday when I found they still sell the old car I had... a Grasshopper. In fact, I still may have it somewhere.... I know all about breaking and fixing them. I broke that thing so many times it's silly. But I'm so far removed from it, I don't know what's good and what's not anymore. Keep in mind this is for my 5 yr old. I think even something like the Grasshopper would be too fast for him. I was just hoping for something relatively low speed with lots of torque that would just tractor around and climb over stuff. The one linked above is about double what I'd like to spend... $100-ish. These any good? http://knoxville.craigslist.org/tag/3444254274.html http://knoxville.craigslist.org/fod/3427672500.html
Peejman, when were you there? I graduated in 1980 Mark

My mom graduated in 80 and my aunt in 83, what year was this done? I heard about it before.
Class of '93.

That gives you (and all of us) some good reinforcement that you can't just point a shotgun in the general direction and expect to hit anything. At typical home defense distances (15ft or less), the pattern is still only a few inches across.

If he liked Cookeville, why not go to school there? It's a great school, typically near the top of the "bang for your buck" lists (not that I'm biased or anything).

How you carry with YOUNG children around.
peejman replied to MississippiBoy's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Here's a great reference in dealing with kids and guns (among other things).... http://www.corneredcat.com/contents/ I've used the "disarm their curiosity" method with my oldest and it seems to work. -
I want to get my (almost) 5 yr old and RC truck for Christmas. He loves then and will sit and watch videos on youtube until we drag him away. My wife bought one off some facebook classifieds thing. Its a huge F150 with lights and such and looks really cool. Since it was (lightly) used, I figured I should make sure it worked properly before giving it to him. I'm glad I did.... while it works fine on the driveway, it doesn't go worth a flip in the grass. I keep my lawn fairly closely mowed and it bogs down within a few feet. The motor hasn't got remotely enough torque. I want something he can drive around in the grass, over small obstacles, and up the slope in my back yard. I don't really need something as elaborate (or expensive) as one of the big traxxas trophy trucks. Modestly indestructible would be good too, I'm sure he'll beat the crap out of it. Anyone have any recommendations?

Target shooting at home? Legal? Sevier County/Knox County
peejman replied to 9mmNoob's topic in General Chat
In general, discharge of a firearm within city limits is against the law. It's usually legal in the county. I live less than 1/2 mile from the city limit and someone near me, closer to the line, shoots occasionally. If you do shoot, make sure you have a good (earthen) backstop. Make good choices for targets. Trees make poor targets, AMHIK. Be aware of how loud guns are and consider your neighbors when shooting. Expect a few visits from the local sheriff. -
ticketed/towed away for parking in front of a garage?
peejman replied to Sam1's topic in General Chat
I had a neighbor who would let her friends park in my space in the car hold randomly. I just started parking behind them and going about my business for a few hours at a time so they could not leave until I was good and ready. What was even worse IMO was the way some if those wonderful people treated the communal washer and dryer like it their own personal property. They'd throw a load in and leave it all night and well into the next morning. Put a stop to that petty quick too, turns out if there's one thing people don't like its doing their laundry twice because someone took their moldy azz clothes out and leaving them on top of the machines. Lucky I didn't throw it on the floor and leave the door open for the neighborhood cats to come in. This may seem harsh but when your trying to do laundry so you'll have clean clothes to wear to work and you can't because the property managers unemployed sister has left her clothes in the washing machine from 5 at night clear through till 7 the next morning it gets real old real quick. I could understand once or twice it slipping her mind or even if she had a work emergency and had to rush out but her lazy butt was just a lazy slob. Apartment living is great huh?
Been there, done that. Apartments, school dorms, and at home with my sister. I'd give a 1 hr grace period. If the machine was done (either washer or dryer) and sat for more than an hour, the stuff got tossed. It was fun throwing my sister's wet, sour clothes on her bed. -
Looks like the extractor is slipping off the rim. Check the extractor and spring. Are the cases sticky in the chamber? Look for a burr in the chamber or tell-tale axial scratches on the spent cases. Also check the gas key. It may be something you can fix yourself. Even if it costs a few $$, that may be better than waiting weeks for them to fix it.
not sure how many of you guys buy powerball / lottery tickets. here at my office, a lot of people are wanting to pool their money and get a bunch of tickets and (IF!) they win split it. why didnt TGO think of this earlier!!! ha ha ha...
Never go in with a bunch of people. If you win, guaranteed lawsuits and lost friends. Splitting it rarely goes well.
Well, I figure it would be possible to take the holster with the gun in it, slide it into your waistband, and mostly be done? This is if you are standing?
Like I said, if you're skinny. I can't suck my gut in enough. My spare mag carrier is a loop style so I've gotta take my belt off to add it anyway. Pulling the holster out is easy. Putting it back, not so much. Maybe it's just me.
-
It isn't so much as arming or disarming, but rather coming from an area such as work when I do not have my holster on. Many times after work I will go other places, and rather than have to loosen my belt and "arrange" everything, it would be nice to just slide the gun and holster into my pants (if the clip will hold them belt in this instance). I assume it will work great.
Unless you're really skinny and/or have very loose fitting clothes, you're gonna have to arrange everything anyway. Doing so while sitting behind the wheel is a bit of a chore.... AMHIK. One of the reasons why I pocket carry a lot.
Today I was parked behind a smart car when I went to leave. I tried a short wheel base ranger and For a moment I thought I could almost fit that car in the back of my truck and haul it off.
An acquaintance drives a Titan, his wife a Smart car. He said he could do exactly that. It'll fit and haul the weight.
My mom, a substitute teacher, had a VW beetle. My friends used to pick it up and carry it off. In junior high school.
My high school band director drove a Suzuki Samurai. Routinely, we'd pick it up and turn it sideways in the parking space. Four people could do it, 6 made it easy. As a senior prank, some friends disassembled a Beetle, hauled the pieces to the gym roof (dome type building), and reassembled it on the roof all in one night.

Assuming you can find out what alloy it's make of, a gunsmith or machine shop should be able to fix it quite easily.
-
When you must disarm, why take the holster off? Just remove the gun and keep the holster on your belt. I have a crossbreed supertuck that I've used for years. I can probably count the number of times I've actually tucked a shirt into it without removing my shoes. Regarding the clips, they're pretty easy to get on/off and hold the holster adequately on my belt. If the holster/belt holds the butt of the gun tight to your body (doesn't hang out or flop around), then the low rider isn't going to make much difference in concealment. Mine is set fairly low, but that's for ease of draw not concealment.

ticketed/towed away for parking in front of a garage?
peejman replied to Sam1's topic in General Chat
I'd put up "no parking" signs, chat with the offender, and raise heck with the complex management. Some people don't know you can actually park a car in a garage, rather than just filling it up with junk. -
thanks for the feedback, this is actually going to be for a lady. Seemed to me the grip on the Smith might have been a bit smaller. Opinions on having a night sight installed? I think maybe the LCR is the only one with that option.
If it's for a lady, let her pick.

Didn't think of the thread protector. For that matter, a piece of 1/2 hose would work.
-
Bummer. Hope you have uninsured motorist coverage. My guess is whoever hit you has nothing for you to take.
-
I've shot exactly one of each and found the LCR much better. The LCR was much more comfortable to shoot and consequently I was much more accurate with it. The air-weight rubbed a blister in the web between my thumb and index finger after about 15 rds. I may have gotten a poor version of an air-weight, the trigger was beyond terrible. The long pull was expected, the 12-15lb pull weight wasn't. The LCR trigger was much lighter, smoother, and more intuitive.
