Yikes! Hope the surgeries and his recovery goes well.

Bummer. Doing the whole thing in one shot may be out, but section hiking or weekend backpacking is always an option.
-
News this morning said its mostly out now. 60 houses gone and another 10-15 damaged.

I've been very happy with my PT145. They don't make it anymore, but the 24/7 compact is essentially the same gun.

Sweet! Where did she get them?

"It's complicated". Heh. I was in a relationship like that once. Trust me, it only gets worse. When I designed parts in the auto industry, Kia & Hyundai (same parent company) were two of my customers. They were beyond horrible to deal with. I believe most of the issues I had were rooted in cultural differences, but geez.... what a total PITA. They didn't have the first clue what they wanted, but they wanted it right f-ing now. When you attempted to explain to them repeatedly why what they asked for wouldn't work, then gave it to them anyway, and it didn't work, they'd be pissed. Ugh. After dealing with them for a couple years I swore I'd never own one of their cars. They put a belt on the V6 for NVH reasons. It's quieter and smoother than a chain.

Cool. I've read about them but never seen one in person. I'd guess it's worth $600-$700.

How are they liable for intentional misuse of the products they sell? It even says so on the web site. In that case, the oil filter manufacturer would be just as liable. Nothing a little duct tape couldn't fix. Just sayin'...

Who's the car for, you or her? A stick is the only way to go in a small car.

Not new. If the people who came up with it first have a patent, I don't see how this isn't a violation. If they didn't patent it... they deserve the business they'll lose. As for the legalities of it... Kinda like speeding. It's only against the law if you get caught. http://www.cadizgunworks.com/zcstore/

Took about a month for my wife's.

Look for a Saturn SL series, '98 or newer. 30 mpg city, 37 mpg hwy with a 5 speed. I put 175k trouble free miles on one. Wish I still had it.

I can't believe how stupid I have been

Being fiscally responsible can be very, very frustrating. Everyone has people they know who are perpetually in debt, regardless of their income. I read somewhere that people's spending/saving habits are pretty much set by the time they're 18. It doesn't matter how much money they make, they'll either save a bit or spend it all and then some. Buy a box of ammo that should be $15 for the new $30 price on the way home. You'll feel better. :) -
I'd have had a few more this weekend but I was so tired from working in the yard, I fell asleep. Life's too short to drink cheap beer.

I sure wouldn't call it dry, but it's been very windy (20+ mph) for the past several days and they're poorly equipped to manage any sort of large fire given the rugged terrain. It doesn't help that the area is quickly becoming a big subdivision with the rental cabins all over the place. I hope the rain with take care of it or at least help the fire fighters get their arms around it.

I had the same issue when we moved here. Housing is pricey. I couldn't find a decent house that would allow my dog for under $1000. I ended up in a condo for $950 until we could purchase a house. I'd also look more toward Oak Ridge or Lenoir City.

Probably just rental vehicles. He's looking in the wrong place. I've seen Airwolf... Look off the nose of the F-86. http://www.tnairmuseum.com/node/11

Based on this... http://vimeo.com/48571597 (zip ahead about 7:30 for the super-slo-mo stuff). It would appear there's two gas clouds. The first precedes the bullet and shows that gas leaks past the bullet while it's traveling down the barrel. The seconds exists behind the bullet but expands nearly instantaneously to a certain size, then stops expanding almost as fast. To me, that implies it has very little mass... very little momentum to continue expanding. The bullet then appears to punch through the gas that's expanded around it and continue on it's path. -

Good point about the relative mass of the powder. I'm not a reloader so I just assumed the powder is much lighter than the bullet. Obviously that's not necessarily true. I wonder if it would be easier to demonstrate with a shotgun or black powder? Both have wadding and powder of significant mass that exits the barrel, yet it doesn't hit the target. -
I needed a laugh this morning.... Come to think of it, we did have chicken stir-fry for dinner on tuesday. No snow though....

I believe it's converted to plasma energy and radiant energy (gamma rays, etc.). The trick for dealing with the forces involved with unburned powder exiting the barrel is to assume the barrel is long enough that all the powder is burning before the bullet exits... Either way, my assumption is that the forces generated by unburned powder exiting the barrel are relatively small compared to everything else (as your incorrect calculation illustrates.... ;) ). -

If the distance is far enough that the drop due to gravity is worth considering, it's probably also worth considering the lift/drag caused by the seams on the ball and how it's rotating. What I meant by "catch the ball in the center of the chest" was to specifically exclude using the arms as a spring to absorb some of the energy. oh, and... :taunt: -

I'll quote myself and say this is really an incomplete answer... Conservation of momentum must also apply here. The baseball at 98 mph actually has more momentum than the bullet. Hence the baseball actually hits you harder.... 200 grain bullet @ 1500 ft/s = 300,000 units of momentum. 149 gram baseball = 2300 grains. 98 mph = 144 ft/s ... => 331,200 units of momentum. (ok purists... that's not typical units, but it works for this illustration... :P ) Assuming you catch both the bullet and the ball in the center of your chest, your body (legs) must exert a larger force against the ground to maintain your balance and not fall over when the baseball hits you compared to the bullet. Ain't math fun? ok. I'll hush now. :)
