  1.   I noticed that too and don't think he ever fired.  Don't draw if you don't intend to use it.
  2. I'd never heard of the HS before now so I certainly wouldn't have known the difference. Neat tho...
  3. The store owner was quite fortunate. That was really bad placement of the vehicle with the drivers door against the wall. Should back in instead. The last shot seems a little questionable as the perp is clearly running away. But the guy did walk up and stick a gun in his face and it all happened really fast. Yet more proof that the idea that you can't draw on a drawn gun isn't true.
  4.     Guilty until proven innocent?           I think you're giving criminals a bit too much credit.  It would take an above average intelligence criminal to pursue that line of reasoning (which is entirely valid).    If it was me, I would've asked why they want to see my ID.  Then I would've asked what I've done wrong.  Barring a good answer to those questions, I'd politely remind them that OC isn't a crime.  If they continued to press the matter politely, yes, I'd show them my ID.  I don't think I'd let it get as far as Mr. Call did before giving in and I sure wouldn't get belligerent, but we don't know how fast the situation escalated.  Then I'd get their names and badge numbers and file a complaint with their supervisor.  Would I sue?  Highly doubtful.  Maybe only if they cuffed and stuffed me for no reason.
  5.     I've got a 50 gal rain barrel and 2 fountains that I put them in.  Lots of wiggling larvae one day, none the next.  Win!    I read somewhere that there's still hundreds of abandoned houses with swimming pools in the Katrina impact zone.  Some group was raising a particular type of fish that eats the larvae and essentially stocking all the abandoned pools to help control the mosquitoes.
  6.     He could/should have taken the officers' names and badge numbers and filed a formal complaint and waited to see if anything happened.  He may well have done that, the article doesn't say.  But recent history tells us that the most effective way to get such things addressed is to sue.  Sad but true.       Exactly.  Rather than taking someone else's word for it ([sarcasm]... because people who call 911 never see things that didn't happen...[[/sarcasm]  ), why not observe and verify for yourself whether there's any illegal activity or not.  If there's no illegal activity, then find the caller and inform them as such.
  7. That High Standard looks very much like a 2nd series Colt Woodsman.
  8. I'm the proverbial mosquito magnet. I'm not looking forward to this summer in that respect. If you see standing water around, toss in one of these (or even half of one). They're cheap and they work.
  9.   I think that was the point... In OH its legal to open carry without a permit, hence open carrying by itself is not a crime, hence the police had no cause to detain him or demand his identification.  Granted, life would've been a lot easier for everyone if he'd just shown his ID/permit and gone his merry way.  However, it's obvious the officers involved don't understand the law and attempted to coerce him into doing what they wanted, even if it what they wanted isn't legal to the letter of the law.  It could've been handled better by both sides, but there's no reason to just roll over and comply.    The training budget is always one of the first things to get cut when money is tight.  Want to spend $5000 to send a couple people to a training class?  Not gonna happen.  The fact that there could be a $3.6 million consequence to that lack of training isn't something management likes to acknowledge.
  10.   Or just disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes and it'll reset.  But since it's adaptive and continually learning, it'll adjust itself eventually anyway.
  11.     Very true.  A trustworthy mechanic is hard to find these days.
  12.     I'll hope I don't have that problem with mine.  If your front diff starts leaking at the output shaft seals... TRADE IT!  :-\   And yes, the internet and youtube is wonderful.  It's extremely unlikely that you've got a car problem that someone else hasn't already posted a solution for on the web.
  13.     Heater core in a friend's girlfriends '89 Camaro.  We had to take the whole dash out of the car.  In the school parking lot.  In the summer.  It took 4 of us 9 hours.  Never again.

    S&W Shield

$299!?!  Dayum.  I'd be all over that.
  15. I do all the routine maintenance stuff.... tune-ups, brakes, oil changes, etc.  I also do minor repairs that don't require a lift or other specialized tools to do, mostly because I'm too cheap to pay someone to do it.  Most of it is really pretty easy though newer cars can be a real PITA for some seemingly simple things.    And for those that insist cars are designed to be hard to work on.... as a former design engineer in the auto industry... no, they don't do it on purpose.  However, they give little regard for serviceability.  All they care about is ease of assembly and meeting their packaging constraints.  The "service" group and the "design" group don't talk.  The service guys just have to figure it out after the design is done.
  16.         I'll agree with the above.  If it's old and never been changed, leave it be.    I get the trans fluid changed in my vehicles every 50k-60k miles.  I change the oil every 5k with semi-synthetic.  And for the record, I hate automatic transmissions.  I'll take a 5 speed any day.  Clutches are MUCH cheaper and easier to replace.
  17.     I agree and think that it would be a fantastic thing for the state's legislation to be upheld, but I suspect the SCOTUS would simply say... "We've already addressed that, see decision XYZ which says states can't do that."  Must be nice to be able to pick which cases you get to hear.
  18. Since I'm the only one in the house awake when I leave for work, I've always made my own lunch.  $8 for lunch, 5 days a week, for 50 weeks a year  = $2000.
  19. Welcome!
  20.     I'm LH/RE.  I grew up shooting left handed and never had any problems because I always closed my right eye.  Growing up left handed in a right handed world, I've always considered myself somewhat ambidextrous.  I catch and throw right handed, play golf right handed, kick right footed, etc.   When I began reading more about pistol shooting, I decided to switch to right hand shooting to match my dominant eye.  Accuracy was never a problem as long as I closed my left eye.  I still struggle with both eyes open.  I've tried the trick above of putting a piece of tape across the left lens of my shooting glasses and it helps.  I've read that if you do this often enough you can re-train your brain as to which eye is dominant, but I don't shoot nearly often enough for that to happen for me.
  21. Good.  I can't believe the families of those involved aren't raising hell over the lack of resolution.  Perhaps they are and that's just one more thing we're not being told...
  22. Love that pic! For me... blade length of 4-5" (which I tell my wife is 9") is about as long as I use regularly. I've got a full-sized KABAR and it's a bit unwieldy for me. It's fun to scare people with, but the only times I've used it is when a hatchet hasn't been handy. To me, anything longer than that 7" blade is moving into machete territory.
