  1. It's baaaaaack.  Making the rounds again apparently.  And yes, still funny.  :)

  3. Seems I only took a couple pics... But here's the good stuff you wanted.... :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acX10jcyaLg&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiY_oEY2-Ns&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut-5IWCJ-D4&feature=youtu.be
  4. If it's just full and needs to be pumped, that shouldn't be a big deal. I assume the whole thing is buried and they'll install the access tunnel for it when they dig it up to pump it. We had ours pumped when I was about 10. The tank was unusually deep, at about 8 ft down. I recall the septic guys scratching their heads and re-re-checking the plans as to it's location. Then when they finally found it, I recall one of the guys falling in.... Thigh deep on one leg.... eeeeewww. In the future, use this stuff... it works. Modern antibacterial soaps work quite well for disinfecting your hands and such. Problem is, they also kill the good bacteria in your septic system.
  5.     Pay close attention to the head spacing portion.  FAL's don't headspace like other rifles.  There's a quite a list of ruined hardware because some "gunsmith" built one for someone and didn't head space it correctly (or at all).    Go here and read lots. These folks can tell you all the stuff you never wanted to know...  http://www.falfiles.com/forums/index.php
  6. I'm also very confused by the y-axis label...   % growth since 1970 and 1972 is at 90%.  So everything grew 90% in 2 years?    Or should that 90 be 0 since all the other labels end with 90 (590, 1090, etc.)?  If so, that means it grew 500% in 23 years (~1993) and another 500% in the following 10 yrs (2003)?  I'm not an economist nor did I sleep at Holiday Inn last night, but I'm not sure I believe that.    That said, I agree with the assessment that the Dow has become decoupled with reality.  Personally, I blame it on the Dow itself and modern communication technology.  Its a vicious cycle that progressed to where publicly held companies have to do their financial reporting quarterly, and that information is available nearly instantly.  A "long term" plan these days is 12 months.  That's madness.  The system has become hypersensitive to the slightest fluctuation...  the butterfly effect.
  7.     A cookie.  They have them at Kroger...
  8.     Depends on what type of Ti you've got.  There's several different alloys with noticeably different properties.  Generally, I don't think Ti wouldn't make good punches, its too soft and can't be hardened easily (or at all, depending on the alloy).          Regarding the heat treatment... again, it depends on the specific alloy.  You can't heat treat any of them in air, but it's routinely done in a vacuum furnace.            More like Ti dust.  It would take some real effort (or stupidity) to get shavings/chips of any size to catch fire while machining.  We turn Ti dry routinely.  You've just got to go slow.    If it does catch fire, it's best to just get away from it and let it burn.  You can't really put it out without big equipment.
  9. Then thumbs (name that movie).
  10.     Very true.  It takes a few tools, but isn't too bad.  I have a "box-o-FAL" in my garage at the moment.  It's all there, just haven't found the time to put it together.  Yes, that's a poor excuse.    http://www.cruffler.com/trivia-April01-background.html
  11. I'm a slacker and haven't got my videos and such uploaded yet.  But I will.       Cannon you say?
  12. They do it here every July 4th...  http://museumofappalachia.org/events-july4th.html
  13.   We also bought one from The Bed Store in Maryville about 5 years ago.  By far the nicest and most knowledgeable sales guy we found, and we went a bunch of places.  Our mattress is a Sterling & Thomas and it's ... ok.  Its a normal spring mattress with a layer of memory foam on top.  It too has developed dips where we typically sleep.  The Sealy pillow top we had before was in better shape after 10 years than this one at 5 years old.
  14. Thanks to all and especially spots! I had a good time and got to see some cool toys. Still not sure which was louder, the .460 or the .338. They're both darn impressive. I'll get the pics and video I took uploaded hopefully tomorrow. Already looking forward to the next one.
  15. I got a flu shot in the fall and got the flu about 2 weeks later.  That's the first time I've had the flu in 6-8 years and the only time I've gotten it when I'd also gotten the shot.  I assume the shot hadn't had time to take full effect or it was one of those strains that wasn't covered.  I spent 2 days in bed doing exactly the same thing.... shivering so hard my back ached and was exhausted, or sweating like a horse.  I basically lived in our bedroom for about 4 days trying to keep our kids from contracting it.  Thankfully they didn't.  It hit me on a friday night and my fever (101-102) broke late sunday.  I went to the doc on monday and got an antibiotic shot and prescription and immediately started feeling better.
  16. Since when is a bb gun a "firearm"?  The ATF doesn't think they are.     http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/firearms-technology.html
  17.     The sharpie trick.  Duh.  :wall:    Wish I'd thought of that at the time....
  18. What's not to like?
  19.   Love is but a lightswitch away...
  20. While you (and I, and many others) may not agree with what they did, it's a free country and they can choose who they want as customers.
  21. I have a Smith's and it works for me.  I had some problems with it at first and I learned something in the process...   Any of the "systems" that hold the blade at a particular angle for you will likely not work real well the first time you try to sharpen a particular knife.  Why?  While they both may say 20 deg or 25 deg, the angle for the sharpener isn't exactly the same as the factory angle on the blade.    Case in point....  The pocket knife the NRA sent me a while back.  I got it out and thought, meh... kinda sharp, but I can do better.  So I got the Smith's out and went to work.  The more I sharpened, the duller it got.  :squint:   When staring at it followed by cussing at it didn't help, I broke out the flashlight and magnifying glass.  A close look at the blade revealed the problem...  there was a nice, shiny, freshly polished strip about 0.020" back from the edge.  The angle I was sharpening at was slightly shallower than the factory edge.  So while I was removing metal, it wasn't from the edge.    So I backed up and got the coarse diamond out, worked on it for a while until I'd essentially re-profiled the edge to match the angle of the sharpener.  Once that was done, the blade sharpened up quite easily.
  22. I've always been very impressed by anyone who can do that.  The precision they achieve by hand is really amazing.
  23.
  24.     Honestly, given the current states of the stock market and the housing market... a house may not be your best investment.  Invest your money in a good fund and get 10-15% return.  Invest your money in a house and get -2% return....  :squint:   The experts claim the housing market has hit the bottom.  I sure hope so, because given what I paid for my house 5 years ago and what my neighbor sold his similar house for late last year, I'm looking at a 5-10% loss if I had to sell it today.   I lived in the house before this one for 7 years.  When I sold it, I made 0.78% total return on the bottom line.  Granted, I built a lot of equity over those 7 years that helped immensely with buying the 2nd one.  And I certainly wouldn't have been able to invest what I paid on the mortgage and pay rent at the same time.    That said, the apt we lived in between the 2 houses reminded me why, and firmly convinced me, that I hate renting.  Even if it is a sucky investment and lots of work, I'd much rather be in a house than an apt.    However, they're not making more land.  Land typically seems to do ok... land with a house sitting on it... not so much.  I don't understand why.    Definitely lots to consider.
  25.     To each his own, but to me its about the history.  That beat up old Garand has history.  Especially when the guy that carried it brought it back.  That chip out of the buttstock, yeah that happened when we hit a pill box on D-Day plus 2.  That scratch in the receiver, that happened when....
