Wow, that sucks.  I'd rail the administration about getting cameras in the parking lot.  They seem to be a necessity these days, sad but true.

I'm not a bow hunter, though I've been considering it for a while.  I've heard good things about this place here in Maryville...  http://www.bowhuntersproshop.com/   The seasoned bow hunters I work with advise that the best value is typically a used bow off Craiglist.  You generally get all the goodies you need at a much reduced price.  I'm told used bows depreciate faster than an 80's Chrysler.

A horrible attack.  Yes, Gary Christian tried to post bail.    I'm on the fence with regard to national publicity.  It's been on the news non-stop here for 6 years.  Just when I thought I might not have to hear about it, the Baumgartner scandal came up and then all the re-trial mess...  I'm just tired of hearing about it.  I can't imagine what the parents have gone through over all these years.  I'm not sure I could deal with that.  I guess that's why I'm tired of hearing about it.  Horrible beyond comprehension.    As for wood chippers and such...  Seen the movie "Law Abiding Citizen"?  If so, you know which scene I've got in mind.

  Yep.  His new love interest lives here.  He's bought some property and is building a house.    Shaq sightings in the summer are fairly regular.  Everything I've heard says he's exactly like you see on TV, just a (very) big fun loving kid.  He's played pick-up b'ball games with kids in the park down the road from my house, he's been seen at the Waffle House, ...   As for Lamar... while he may be from here, he's been living in DC so long that I personally don't consider him a local anymore.    Earl Scruggs (bluegrass musician) lived in Sparta up until his recent passing.   Pat Summitt lives in Alcoa.   Phil Fulmer lives in Maryville, a couple miles from my house.    Reggie White had a house here for many years.    Trevor Bayne is from Knoxville.

  Good points.  Given that I don't own any "boutique" knives, I don't worry about it.  I've got a few nicer kitchen knives, but they're very lightly used and unlikely to get lost. 

  I wouldn't carry it routinely.  At best it might might live in the vehicle.  My intent for it is to inspect the house for storm damage or for things that go bump in the night outside.  It's much too powerful to use inside, and I have other flashlights for that.

  True.  But its been off on 2 of 3 pocket knives I've sharpened with it.  Doesn't really matter either way.   The sharpie is good idea to see where the stone is hitting.  I've just used a flashlight to look for facets.  1 facet  = good angle.  2 (or more) = get the coarse stone out and go until there's only 1. 

  It's not so much the distance as the time.  Finding a spare 2-3 hrs these days is like hunting snipe.

  Agreed.  The bright light combined with the strobe function is very disorienting.  The person on the other end will be "flash blinded" for at least a few seconds.  Plenty of time to get the upper hand.    You want a light that's easy to turn on/off quickly.  I would never wear a headlamp.  I've read that people will shoot at the light when they can't see anything else.  That's why I prefer a hand-held light.  I hold it away from my body.

    Generally...  pocket knives, multi-tools, and other "utility" blades are 25 deg for the best combination of sharpness and durability.   Kitchen knives are generally 20 deg edges for better sharpness.  Durability is less of a concern as you're typically not cutting rope or cardboard with a kitchen knife.    You can set the kit up and use a flashlight and magnifying glass to look closely at the angle of the blade and angle the sharpener it at to determine if they match.  Put the light behind the stone and look for light leaking through the gap between the blade and stone.    My assumption is the 25 deg version on my kit is a little off.  It doesn't take more than 1 deg of error for the sharpener to not work very well.  That said, it only took a few passes with the coarse stone to reshape the edge.  It doesn't remove a lot of metal. 

I have that Smiths kit and it works pretty well. I'm terrible at sharpening by hand so having the guides helps a lot. One thing I've learned is that the angle on the blade and the angle of the sharpener don't always match, even if they're supposed to be the same. I had trouble with one of my pocket knives which should have been a 25 deg edge. I tried to just touch up the edge because it wasn't that dull. The more I tried, the duller it got. I looked at the edge with a magnifying glass and it was clear the sharpener was at a different angle than the factory edge. I ended up having to reprofile it with the coarse stone to get it sharp.

  Seer is just a measurement of efficiency.  The higher, the better.  That said, buying a very high seer unit may not be most cost effective energy saving method.  Look long and hard at things like type of windows and their locations, insulation, orientation of the house with respect to sun/shade, passive heating and cooling, etc.    Do the math on the dual fuel option as well.  It's just a gamble based gas prices vs. electric prices.  Personally, I don't see either changing much in the foreseeable future.  My parents have a Carrier dual fuel unit.  The gas (propane) rarely runs and the whole unit has had far more problems than expected from a "Carrier".  The 10yr parts/labor warranty turned out to be a wise choice.  If you've got natural gas service available, I'd go with a standard gas furnace.  They're simpler and gas heat feels warmer.  If/when the power goes out, it takes much less electricity to run a gas furnace compared to a heat pump.
