  1.   Stainless isn't necessarily bare metal.  Some have a clear coat to help protect against scratches.  Regardless, you've got to roughen the surface so the coating will adhere properly.  It might take a few less minutes with stainless, but that's likely not worth the higher initial price of stainless.
  2.           But seriously...    Functionally, there's very little difference between a part machined from a forging compared to one machined from billet.  A forged part starts as a billet, but gets mashed and pounded on until it's roughly the right size and shape.  One can do things like take advantage of things like non isotropic properties in forgings, just depends on how thoughtful the designer is and whether or not it matters.    From another perspective, there's a lot less waste (the pile of chips on the floor) when a forging is used.  A forging should be roughly the right size already so you have to remove a lot less metal to finish it, and so it takes significantly less machining time.  The trade off is the expense of the forging operations and tooling, which aren't cheap.    Some people will talk about strength, weight, and while there is a difference... it's minimal.
  3. Exactly as the description says... its an offshoot from paintball guns.  Spray and pray is the norm there.
  4. Condolences to you and your family.  I lost my sole remaining grandparent (grandma) a couple weeks ago, she was 96.  Both of my grandfathers passed before I was born.  My wife's grandfather is still around and I really like the fact that not only do my boys have 2 grandfathers, they also have a great grandfather.
  5. If properly prepared (stripped to bare metal), it doesn't matter.
  6. In for one lower.    I'd also like some clarification on the FFL thing.  If those of us in the east need to talk to a local FFL about it, I'm sure that can be accommodated.
  7. Ah, so it already exists. There goes my million dollar idea...
  8. I've often wondered about an attachment to the back of the slide similar to an AR's charging handle. It would significantly reduce the grip strength necessary and simply give your thumb and fingers something to bear against.
  9. mmmmmm.... .308 saiga.  Got to shoot one once upon a time...   BIG boom and BIG fireball.  Awesome.
  10. Ah, the singing bird pistols again.  I find stuff like this absolutely fascinating.
  11. I use my credit card for most everything these days.  While the cash back program isn't the best, I've had the same card for over 20 yrs and never paid a cent in interest fees.  Given the identity theft issues, I'd never use a bank card linked to my account.  My wife has a Discover card and does the groupon thing pretty regularly.
  12. Looks good!
  13.     A good summation of corporate America as a whole.   Every job I've had I've lived through layoffs, benefit cuts, pay cuts, etc...   My current employer was the exception up until yesterday.

      ... unless they're poorly designed.
  15. That's part of my aversion to kerosene heaters.   A coworker's ex-wife (and mother of his son) wasn't so lucky.  They found her and her boyfriend dead in a cabin from CO poisoning due to using an "outdoor only" kerosene heater indoors.  I would assume that new ones would have an automatic shut-off feature, and you absolutely should have a separate CO detector near the heater.
  16. Someone's got photoshop skillz....
  17. Cool.  Not sure I'd risk carrying a family heirloom like that, but if you're good with it...
  18.   I had one nearly get me once....  I had just walked around the corner and there was this swoosh and rustle of feathers right across my head.  It flew back up, sat on my roof, and fussed at me for screwing up it's meal.
  19. A BJ.    :woohoo:         But given how infrequently that happens   :-\   ...   cooking with a cold adult beverage works too.        Nice cooker.  I've been thinking of building something like that.  Do you have any problems with the heat degrading the block?  Or is it lined with fire brick?
  20. The video shows roasting marsh mellows over the fire.  Do not do that without water in the kettle.  The water will keep the metal cool(er).    As others have said... perfectly safe.  Perhaps a slight metallic taste to the water, but it shouldn't leach anything harmful.  Kinda bulky for backpacking.
  21. We've only got a few humming birds.  We used to have more, but my arsehat neighbor cut down a willow tree that they liked to roost in.  My parents generally have a dozen or so.  They're definitely fun to watch, they'll keep my kids entertained for a while.    So who else has had one come eat from the feeder while you're carrying it from the house to the yard?    We have several other regular bird feeders and lots of birds.  I like watching and listening to them, though I will admit my favorite part is when the resident Cooper's Hawk swoops in and snatches a Dove.  :)
  22. Good deal.  My wife and I have wanted to get a pop-up for several years.  To me, anything bigger than that isn't camping anymore, its RV-ing.  Some folks seem to tow the whole house behind the truck.    Other than money, our current excuse is we're waiting for the littlest one to get potty trained.  Somehow changing poopy diapers while camping just doesn't strike me as loads of fun.  (get it, loads?...   ).  Every so often I get on craigslist and see what's out there.  Prices seems to vary tremendously for little apparent reason.  It's good to see you can get a decent one for a modest price.  What size box is it?
  23. Pay to join?  None.   Do I mind providing a small donation to help keep good communities going?  Nope.
  24.     I have the same heater.  I've only had it out of the box to verify that it works.  I've also got the hoses for connection to a 40lb tank but haven't bought another cylinder yet.  Given expectations of the coming winter, I probably should.  The "grand plan" is to install some vent free gas logs as a no electricity heat source but haven't gotten there yet.    I've always been leery of kerosene heaters.  Can't stand the smell and sure don't want it in my house, but perhaps the newer ones are better.  I'd also like to hear some recommendations.
  25. You can go online and look yourself up via SSN. Or just call the office and perhaps they can find your number. It was about 20 years between safety class and first license purchase for me.
