  1.     Right.  I wouldn't mention it, but it would be good to have the policy handy in the event they ask and get excited about it.
  2. Print out the USPS policy that states they ship firearms and take it with you....   just in case.
  3. Interesting twist to the story.  A simple call to 911 or the local sheriff's office to verify whether the officer could legally require the driver to pay could've answered that question on the spot.   If she really thought something dirty was going down, she should've called 911 when she drove off.  I've told my wife lots of times to never stop on the side of the road in the boonies.  ALWAYS drive to a public spot before stopping.   Call 911 and tell the operator what you're doing.    The 14 yr old should've stayed in the car.

    Sks sights

SKS sight adjustment...  http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/sights/   I also have Tech Sights on my SKS.  I just prefer peep sights and the longer sight radius is nice.  I also had to dremel my stock a little to get the Tech Sight to fit.  Interestingly, the rifle shot quite well with the stock sights.  When I installed the Tech Sights, it was way off to the right.  I've got it back on target but the Tech Sight is cranked nearly all the way over.  I'd like to move the front sight a bit but haven't ever bothered to get the nifty tool.    The dust cover type scope mounts don't work very well.  The dust cover just isn't rigid enough to make a stable base.  The "scout" type scope mounts that fit up near the existing rear sight work better.

    The "Get Home" Gun

Maps...  for those in the east, these are excellent maps.  Much better and more detailed than the Delorme Gazetteer.    http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/ngs/category/maps/travel-and-hiking-maps/trails-illustrated-hiking-and-recreation-maps/tennessee
  6. Heh, reminds me of this one...  http://www.snopes.com/photos/risque/ventcover.asp
  7. A coworker is from Louisiana and is a great cook.  I've gotten a few recipes from him and while they're all rather involved and take a while to prepare, they're excellent.    Making your own roux isn't the easiest thing...   Be very patient and very careful with the heat.  It'll go from a beautiful peanut buttery brown to burnt black really quick.  And that'll really piss you off when you've been standing at the stove stirring for the last 45 mins...
  8. There's a reason why retail stores are dying out, you just found it.
  9. Cool. Wonder if it was filmed with the trucks going forward and then played back backwards? Ok... Watched the "making of" video. I'm impressed.
  10. That guy is lucky. Owls are incredibly strong, they can break bones with their talons. I'd say it's better to blow your cover and shoo the owl away than have one get after you.
  11. Cool place to shoot clays. Did it once there several years ago. I found it really fun though I really, really suck at it. Our director at work is a big clay shooter (both literally and figuratively).
  12. Read several stories about the preparations for that. Incredibly cool for that boy! I bet they'll make some sort of video about it.
  13.     I suspect it already left a mark.    Glad you're ok.  Cars are easily fixed.  People, not so much.
  14. A former coworker got hit in around the collar bone while walking from his car to his front door after arriving home from work one afternoon.  They determined the bullet was fired from a range about 3/4 mile away.  I think it was a .45, but I've slept since then.   He said it felt like getting stung by a hornet combined with a dull thud that knocked him a little off balance.  Lucky for him, his wife was already home.  She saw his knees buckle in the driveway and the rapidly expanding blood stain on his white shirt.  They didn't believe the EMT when he told them it looked like a gunshot wound.  They removed the bullet and he recovered fully.
  15. Hope you told the upstairs tenant and the complex manager what happened...
  16. Welcome!
  17.     Our dog got sprayed saturday night.  We've washed her 4 times with the peroxide/baking soda stuff.  The smell is mostly gone, but its still there if you get up close.  I'm glad the weather was reasonably warm up until yesterday as we've had the windows open trying to air out the house.  Stupid dog.  :bat:
  18.   I wondered who this could be right up until this post.  Now I don't even need to click the link.  :)

    The "Get Home" Gun

Maybe I'm just weird, but the tennis racket bag in the context of shtf just screams "gun!" to me. Why would someone walking a long way when things have gone sideways be carrying a tennis racket? In normal life, I think its a good stealth carrying mode.
  20. You could always just use Great Stuff.  It'll have nearly the same insulation properties as styrofoam and you can custom fit it to the box/sausage.

    The "Get Home" Gun

Very important point here that lots of people fail to recognize...   Will you have to cross water?  What if it's cold water?  What if it's fast moving, cold water?    There's lots of rivers and lakes around here and bridges are obvious points of constriction (that's why trolls live under them).  Think you're gonna swim 200 yds across the Tennessee River with all that gear?  When it's 20 deg out?    There was another thread not too long ago where several folks gave some really good suggestions in that regard... http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/69867-my-worst-case-scenario/

    The "Get Home" Gun

This.  In that sort of situation stealth and/or simply being inconspicuous would be very important IMO.  20 miles is a long way for most people to hike.  It's doable in a day if you're used to it and the terrain is moderate, but bushwhacking 20 miles across the hills is way different from walking down the street.
  23.     eeeewwwww.    If I could find some directional explosive and point the blast towards the mean old man next door's house... that might be worth considering.
  24. Might not always end that well. Kudos to them for taking the initiative, but I'd say they were pretty lucky.
  25. Bury it, stuff it in a yard bag and trash it, burn it, toss it in a lake, grind it up and compost it, .....
