  1. If she doesn't like twisty roads, better look at the southern middle/west. When we lived in Kingsport and. my in-laws came for a visit, my FIL said, "good grief, are there no straight roads here?" Nope, and we like it that way. :)
  2. Somewhat off topic, but can someone explain how dry firing damages a crossbow?
  3. They could produce for less cost, but it would take a big investment. Highly automated processes would minimize labor, which is typically the biggest expense. But that kind of equipment isn't cheap. I always laugh at the Les Baer commercial that talks about "hand fit tolerances that no CNC machine can match"... which is utter nonsense. Just an excuse to justify their prices.
  4. The vast majority of the time that's all we get most anywhere in the state, an inch or so that's mostly gone by lunch. But storms do come through they can drop a couple inches in the low lands and a foot or more up in the hills. The big problem is ice. It'll start raining when it's 34 deg and then the temps drop into the 20s. Nasty ice everywhere. That happens 1-3 times per season. If you really want to avoid that, you'll need to look further south.
  5. Crossville is a nice enough town but there's just not much there. It's a quiet little town. Being on the plateau, it's generally a little cooler in the summer but they get more ice and snow in the winter.
  6. I also enjoy splitting wood by hand. We had a fireplace insert stove where I grew up and cut and split a lot of wood. We lived in a wooded subdivision and whenever anyone dad knew had a tree come down, we'd go cut it up and haul off. Splitting wood does wonders for teenage angst. Save an apt we lived in for a while, we've not had a fireplace since. I miss it and would really like to have one, mostly for emergency heat. I hope to install gas logs in my current house. I'd like a wood burning stove, but there's just not a good place for one in the house.
  7. Went there last night. Same as I remember, reasonably nice and affordable. The deal with no steel or aluminum cased ammo still seems odd to me, but obviously they've got a deal with a recycler or reloading company to buy brass only.
  8. Got to try it out yesterday evening... 50 rds of WWB, 50 rds of federal ball, and 25 rds of Critical Defense with zero issues. :) As most have said, really soft shooting for a small 9mm. Pretty accurate for me, though an inch or two to the left. Wifey was on target and was quite happy with it, though a bit more practice is in order.
  9. If you want to avoid the "big city", then Nashville and Knoxville are out. Both are far too big city-ish for me. I grew up in the Chattanooga area and it's a nice place. We now live in Maryville where my wife grew up and its nice too. My wife and I both went to college in Cookeville. It's a small town that's grown tremendously over the years. Our favorite area is the "Far East" tricities area. We lived near Kingsport for about 8 years.
  10. While I agree that the CEOs of some charities make way too much money, the fact is that it's very difficult to find someone with the skills to manage such a large organization who will work for less. A lot of them could easily double their pay running another business. Such is the world we live in.
  11. Can't go wrong with St Jude or Ronald McDonald house. Otherwise I'd look at some local charities like the food pantry or rescue ministries. My wife donates small amounts to a bunch of charities. If you do some research, it seems the more efficient charities have 20% overhead or less.
  12. Sorry to hear that.
  13. LEDs are great for small lights or lighting small areas, but they still haven't gotten the color and diffusion quite right for big shop lights. Big fluorescent fixtures still work much better.
  14. I've been very happy with my Taurus PT145. They don't make that model anymore, but the newer ones are very similar.
  15. Take it down, politely explain why, and offer to go with her to find something more appropriate. My wife bought a huge wreath for our front door. I made a comment about it being somewhat large. She said she was afraid the smaller one would block the peep hole. They catch on eventually. ... Or, use it as an excuse to buy a security camera. :)
  16. Welcome!
  17. I still think its oak. Yes the red color in box elder or spalted maple is from fungus (rot).
  18. We've been there a number of times, though not terribly recently (sad to admit that). The range and the people have always been nice enough. We need to go back soon so my wife can try out her new Shield. :)
  19. My parents go to church with a neurosurgeon in Chattanooga, though I think he may have retired recently. The part about the absurd malpractice insurance premiums is quite true. Dad has a friend who was making huge money as a anesthesiologist, but quit when his malpractice premium surpassed $1M/yr.
  20. I'm somewhat obligated to pull for FSU simply because they're in the ACC. Mostly I just hope it's a good game.
  21. Sissies. Real men pick up their chainsaw... :) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=brfKKehFtmw
  22. I do better identifying by leaves than bark, but it looks like oak to me.
  23. Wow. Never heard of that approach. Of all people to approach in a setup like that, you'd be pretty low on the list.
  24. True dat. Fwiw, rattle can stuff works reasonably well. If you don't care what it looks like, get creative! Maybe the local school art and autobody classes could use a free subject.
  25. Saw a tv spot on the town in Oregon a while back, forget which channel. Not surprisingly the tv folks were pushing the vigilante vibe, but it mostly seemed like rural country folk looking out for one another.
