  1. Interesting stuff.  Thanks.
  2. Thanky, that's exactly what I had in mind. I like the old school fixed stock rifle look but the A2 stocks are too long for me. While they're essentially the only game in town, I'm quite happy with the Cav Arms stock. The mid-length upper gives it that rifle look. I still may get a carry handle for it, but having shot a couple AR's with red dots... they're just so darn easy. And I got a good deal on the optic here. Time to build it? I probably watched the lower assembly videos 2 or 3 times before I started assembly. Took me about an hour to build the complete lower... and I probably did it 3 times. Both the pivot and take down pin were really stiff at first and I fiddled with them for a bit until I was satisfied I'd put them together correctly. While the threaded bolt catch pivot pin is very easy and convenient... mine was also pretty very stiff. A minute or two with a small round file fixed that. Then the issues that I had with the selector spring made me completely remove, check, and reinstall the trigger group twice.... and I still used the wrong spring! I blame PSA for intentionally confusing me by putting too many springs in the LPK. But I'll fix that when I get the new pistol grip. Beyond that it takes about 5 seconds to slap the upper on the lower (I bought a complete upper) and you're done. I did swap the hand guard which took maybe 5 minutes. The hard part there was installing the Magpul version. It was really tight on the FSB and took a bit to convince myself to push it that hard. But once I did that, it went right on. Installing the flip-up rear took maybe 2 minutes. I read the reviews that said to push it rearward while tightening... so I did and it tightened up fine. Installing the optic took maybe 20-30 minutes. No rocket surgery there, just me being slow and anal about leveling it and getting it where I wanted it on the rail. I've not shot it yet but after installing the sights, the red dot and irons appear to be within a couple inches of one another at ~100 yds. The dot appears to be exactly the same height as the front sight and the width of the post to the right. So in all of that... maybe 90 minutes if done all at the same time. Probably 20 minutes (or less) for someone who knows what they're doing. These things really do go together like Legos. On the other hand, that FAL that I built was MUCH more involved. ;)
  3.     The "no coolers, no backpacks" weighed significantly into us not going.  That's just absurd.  I'm not gonna spend a week's pay trying to keep my family hydrated when you're stuck out in the sun with no shade all day long.  The lack of ground exhibits pretty much puts the nail in the coffin.  I too remember seeing all kinds of stuff there.  Even a separate area for people who flew their own airplane there... dozens and dozens of every type of kit plane imaginable.
  4. Shocker of the century... Lots more info in this one. Thanks. I use to live about 5 miles from volunteer high.
  5. The WBIR link says this....
  6. Nope, one kid's "counselor" (which I take to mean psychiatrist) informed police.
  7. Got my sheath back and I dig it! Dad made the knife for me from a kit. He's a talented wood worker, but hasn't ever tried knives before. He made the grips from a piece of zebra wood. He gave me a nylon sheath with it, but I thought it deserved something a little better. While this sheath is pretty simple (at my request), I think this is much better. Mostly because it fits the knife so well and fits on the correct side of my belt. :)
  8. So I'll bring this thread back from the dead... Mine is finally done. Well, sort of. :) Took rather a while to collect all the pieces, but I'm glad I was picky and got exactly what I wanted. TGO CMT billet lower PSA LPK PSA 16" midlength complete upper, BCG and charging handle included Magpul MOE handguard (bought from someone here) PSA flip-up rear sight Cavalry Arms C1 fixed stock Primary Arms red dot and mount (bought from someone here) This is my first AR. :woohoo: Building it was pretty darn easy. I just followed the videos that OS posted and while I did sent a detent flying once or twice, thankfully it didn't go far. The storage compartment in the stock is cavernous! I can easily fit two 10 rd stripper clips in it. I think I could squeeze 3 in there if I really wanted to. I plan to get a Hogue pistol grip for it and when I swap that, I'll put the correct selector detent spring in this time (oops... ) and adjust the set screw to snug up the fit between the lower and upper. Thanks to all who posted the many helpful hints on how to build it. :hat: When I did the big unveiling for my wife.... she said, "Cool! When do I get to shoot it?" Right after I do, dear. Right after I do. :)
  9.     We attempted to plan our vacation around that very thing.  Unfortunately they're doing a show somewhere the week the kids have off.  :(
  10. The different ammo certainly could make a difference.  Even different lots of the same ammo could be different.  The further out you go, differences in velocity and ballistic coefficient increase.  A chronometer isn't a bad idea either to ensure you're seeing consistent velocity.
  11. Wow, the price point sure is attractive to cheap bas... I mean frugal people like me.  :)
  12. Looks good though some of the pictures nearly gave me vertigo.
  13. The answer is... "... people like you."
  14. I get the "solution in search of a problem" vibe, but if it's free....
  15. I guess expectations vary.  I've an old Craftsman that came with the house.  I've had it for 6 years, but I don't know how old it is.... maybe 10 years old?  Anyway... I change the oil, blow out the air filter, and sharpen the blades once/yr.  Had to replace the battery a few years ago.  Never replaced a plug.  I bought new blades this spring because I hit a stump with one last fall and a hit a rock hiding in the grass with the other blade during the first mowing this spring.  I leveled the deck when I replaced the blades and the grass looked a little more even.  My only complaint is that it doesn't go fast enough.  It won't even wheelie!      F-I-L spent something like $1300 replacing the transmission in his 5 yr old Deere a couple years ago.  And that's on top of the $200-$300 annual service.  Granted, he's a big dude with a big yard, but one could buy a whole new mower for that.
  16.     Kids + Darkness + Flashlights  = hours of fun   Mine turn all the lights off in the house, grab their flashlights, and run around squealing with joy.
  17. It blew at lot and rained a fair bit, but nothing more than a few modest limbs down 'round here.
  18. All you guys that like Puleo's shrimp and grits need to visit the low country and see what real shrimp and grits tastes like. Not saying Puleo's is bad, it's quite good, but shrimp fresh off the boat, yellow corn grits, and some andouille sausage... That's where it's at.
  19. I agree with 10-ring. I'd never own a JD mower, parts and service are absurd. My F-I-L and G-F-I-L both have mowers. For the same price as 2 or 3 of their annual tune-ups, one could just buy a new Murray or Craftsman. JD makes darn fine tractors, but their mowers are average at best. Glenn, check the oil. Wonder if they forgot to refill it?
  20.   I bit far away for me to do that.  And if I'm in, I'm in all day.  I could wander around and look at airplanes for hours.
  21. Welcome. I grew up in Chattanooga and went to UTC for a couple years.
  22. Would love to go but just don't think the kiddies are up for being out in the sun all day. I miss real airshows.
  23.     Having looked at the full resolution pic... doesn't look like a crack to me either.  Looks more like a tool mark or blemish in the finish.    Dab a bit of penetrating oil on it and let it sit for a few minutes, then clean the surface thoroughly with alcohol.  Set the rifle so that area is down and leave it for a couple hours.  If any oil wicks out of that area, it may be a crack.  If it stays dry, probably not.
  24.     mmmmm.... shrimp & grits.
  25. This lady sold our house when we lived up there. She was great... https://m.facebook.com/SissyHopsonRealtor?refsrc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&_rdr
