  1. Welcome!
  2. Good tires plus very slow and steady is the trick. Lots of people don't have the patience or touch with the throttle to go super slow. They want to go faster so they spin the tires which is counter-productive.
  3. Welcome! I lived in Church Hill for a while.
  4. I planted field peas as a cover crop and they were doing quite well. I'm not sure if they'll make it through this or not. They're not complete mush, but they are pretty flat. The package said they'd be ok with short duration cold snaps but time will tell.
  5. So it's cross threaded and fully seated? If so, probably easiest to cut the end off and re-thread. I'd presume the threads are trashed. Find a device long enough to meet the length requirement if needed. You could try cutting into the side of the device, perpendicular to the threads (along the barrel axis) until you can just start to see the threads. Then hit the slot with a cold chisel and see if it'll crack. You might be able to rotate it off or get it off in pieces.
  6. I agree completely, perhaps society was a little more civil then. There’s tech available now that dramatically reduces the risk of personal injury.
  7. I hear tales that Bull Run is down. That would explain the power shortage.
  8. I got called in as reserve for our loss prevention at Sears in high school. Mostly just blocking exits and trying to funnel them where we wanted them. I did end up in a wrestling match one time. The guy made it to his car and was fighting with one handcuff on. I managed to get the other cuff hooked around the seat so he couldn't swing. He gave up when the cops arrived. In retrospect, that was really stupid for $5.35/hr and maybe a couple hundred in merch. Most places have a policy against that now... just let them go if they make it out of the store.
  9. That's why it's a legal system rather than a justice system.
  10. That happens every time it gets really cold in my house. Aluminum framed windows and an aquarium that keeps the humidity up in the house. Which reminds me, I need to get a towel and dry all the condensation off the window frames when it finally thaws out. It gets moldy and damages the sheetrock otherwise.
  11. Blount county isn't on the list of rolling blackouts, but our power has gone out twice today. The first time was late last night and the second was a couple hours ago. Oddly, the one this afternoon was only 2-3 minutes.
  12. One thing to consider is time. It was nearly 50 deg yesterday. With mass of the concrete slab, the house sitting on it insulating/warming it, how little of it is actually exposed to the outside air, the ground underneath that is also about 50 deg, it will take a long time for the concrete to cool to below freezing. I haven't done the math, but my hunch is several days before you've got anything to worry about. Last time it got this cold (single digits), I was freaking out about my pipes freezing. I climbed into my crawlspace with a thermometer and about 1 ft inside the block wall the air temp was still 35-37deg. Very low risk of freezing. That said, letting the water drip is a safe thing to do. Pick the line that's the furthest from where the water comes in and let it drip, both hot and cold. Or just run it for 10 seconds every couple hours.
  13. That's terrible. Seems like an odd sequence of events.
  14. Dad resembles this. Half the bed of his truck is full of stuff he "needs" to get to the golf course or grocery store and back.
  15. I have a friend with a green card as well and it took several months for his permit to show up. Granted, that was quite a few years ago, but TICS has taken weeks for him. Maybe it's faster now.
  16. If she'll get her citizenship in 2 months (congrats!), it's probably best to wait for that. The process to get one as a green card holder will likely take longer than 2 months.

    Medical

Indeed. My Dad had triple bypass at age 54. That's not far off for me now. I've got other family members with various medical issues and the recurring theme is people not taking great care of themselves. I get it, I love to eat too, but being at least somewhat fit from a cardiovascular perspective pay huge gains. How can you expect to fight off these never-ending respiratory bugs when 1 flight of stairs makes you winded? Back and joint problems slow a lot of folks down, but there's plenty of ways to stay fit that don't involve running. I'm fortunate in that my family is in good shape on the eternity side. Everyone sins, but forgiveness is granted to those who ask and repent.
  18. The battle of 5 points like in Gangs of New York? They're finally expanding to 12 teams. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/12/01/college-football-playoff-expanding-12-teams-2024-season/10810063002/
  19. A well trained and practiced solider could get off 3 shots per minute.
  20. I think this year may put a damper on the drive to form these super power conferences. The trick to making the playoffs seems to be to go undefeated against an assortment of high school and Jr College teams so that everyone is healthy and rested come playoff time.
  21. I got this model for my birthday earlier this year, though it didn't come with a carry bag. Its the perfect size for my family and is small enough to stay on my screened porch, out of the weather. The 1 lb bottles make it through several meals, though I also got the hose for 20lb grill bottles. Season it like they say, treat it like a cast iron skillet, and it stays non-stick. I'll admit I haven't mastered steaks on it yet, but most everything else has been excellent.
  22. This came on my feed this morning. Let's just say it resonated with me.
  23. Osage orange wood makes pretty bowls, platters, furniture, etc. But it does require a sealant otherwise the color will fade. Example photo...
