Young red tailed hawk. Adult cooper's hawks are a bit smaller (about the size of a big crow) and usually more gray. Most of the hawks around here look pretty similar when they're juveniles (red tailed, red shouldered, coopers, sharp-shinned, broad winged, ... ) and it can be really hard to tell the difference until they're adults. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-tailed_Hawk/id http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Coopers_Hawk/id

Hence my comment about not wanting to be part of the learning curve. People are selfish and can't do math so think that being one car ahead or driving 5 mph faster somehow saves them vast amounts of time. But again, if when the light turns green and that motorcycle jets off out of sight, you realize it's not a big deal. It's not like cars where there's only so much space. Motorcycles occupy the space between the cars and then are gone at the first opportunity. The idea is, when people see how much easier the bikes get through the traffic, they'll want to get a bike too, and that will be one less car on the road.

Right, $300 for 2 tires, not 4.

I picked up a new Zastava from here for under $600 about a month ago. ;)

We do birds.... (mrs. peej) We've got a few feeders and like having them around. Mom has LOTS of feeders and probably goes through 50lbs of sunflower seed in a week or two. We have a strange woodpecker that likes sunflower seed. He'll get a seed, carry it up to the edge of the eave or gutter, and jackhammer away at it. It literally sounds like someone is hammering on the roof. It's either a downy or a hairy woodpecker.

80k seems early for struts to go, but it depends heavily on how it was driven. Frequent gravel roads or unbalanced tires will kill them in short order. $1100 seems a little high to me, but all the stuff adds up quick. Get an itemized quote and do a little reality check.

Agreed. There are no laws I'm aware of that cover that. Employment or union contracts might, if you're subject to them. I've also been through the bought/sold routine a few times with multiple employers. My current employer changed ownership (again) just last week in fact. Generally there's 2 scenarios.... 1) everything changes, or 2) nothing changes. I am but one of the minions and have no control over anything, so I choose not to worry about it.

Not to completely derail the thread, but it works in CA and most of Europe and Asia because it's "normal" there and has been for generations. (Almost) Everyone is accustomed to it. While I don't have any real objection to it becoming legal here, I'm not real interested in being part of the learning curve.

Meh. They've made thousands of them and this is the first time I've heard of a rusty one.

Yes. The struts are part of what holds the tire on the road. If the struts are worn and letting the tire wobble around, they will have unusual wear. That said, I'd get a 2nd opinion. How many miles on the car?

Shed Plans - What Would You Have Done Differently?
peejman replied to wewoapsiak's topic in General Chat
Everything from the ground to the floor should be treated. The rest doesn't have to be if you're going to paint it. Plan to spend some time picking through the stacks of lumber at the lumber yard. It's worth the time to get boards as a straight as you can find, rather than just ordering a bundle. Pay attention to the grain in the board in particular with the treated stuff, as it can warp tremendously while it dries. If construction will be a slow process, get only what you can use in a week or so. Boards will warp when left sitting for days out in the weather. -
Tactical Double Rifle Cases at Ollie's in Knoxville
peejman replied to Moped's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I was under the impression (from conversations with others) that it was the same stuff that walmart sells at higher prices, with some of the infomercial crap thrown in for good measure. That said, I've got more rifles than cases now, so a double rifle case for $20 is appealing. -

I'll try to remember to stop by there on my way home today. I've never been in there. -
Get her a dedicated carry purse and make sure she understands that the purse has to stay on her person at all times. Get her to practice that now. I bet she'll quickly decide that on body carry is far less intrusive and annoying than fumbling around with a purse. She's gonna need both hands for the young'un, the purse will get dropped, left, etc. And congrats on the upcoming new addition. They change everything.

Shed Plans - What Would You Have Done Differently?

Bigger. Always Bigger. Draw up a floor plan layout. Measure out all the stuff you think you might put in there, and make sure it all fits with adequate space to walk around it without having climb over stuff or move 5 things to get at that one stuck in the back. I bet the first thing you'll notice is that a 36" wide door is fairly limiting. I'd look at a 48" door. Yes, 6x6 supports. 4x6's at least. Over-build the crap out of it, you'll be glad you did later. Skylights instead of windows. Saves wall space, cheaper and more secure than windows. Gable/soffit/ridge vents for some air flow. Think real hard about running power. It's a whole lot easier now than later. -

It's just tuning the gun to a load rather than tuning a load to the gun. Sometimes there's a magic spot where everything is happy, sometimes not.

Thinking of getting a dog...please choose rescue.
peejman replied to Trekbike's topic in General Chat
A former neighbor had to deal with that. Her dad died and she had to take his dog. The dog went from living with an old man who never left home to living with a busy family who never were home. That poor dog cried and cried for weeks until they found another person to take it. As for rescue dogs, I guess we have the exception. I've had shelter critters my whole life and this one has been a PITA since day 1. Massive separation anxiety, massively anti-social with other dogs, clearly abused as a puppy, ... generally a neurotic mess. She's mostly manageable now, after lots of work and some help from Cesar Milan's books. She'll be 14 this summer. We tried to re-home her after she bit my son the 2nd time (on his forehead, stitches required), but were treated quite poorly by the rescue groups we contacted. More training of both the kids and the dog (and my inability to have her put down) have helped, but there are still occasional bumps in the road. When she passes I think it'll be a while before we get another dog. I'm kinda over it at this point, and that bugs me. I want my kids to grow up with pets they can love, not a dog they have to be somewhat wary of. -
Cool. I'll try to remember that for the next time I'm near there.

Exactly. There was no "auto park" involved. Maybe auto brake or pedestrian detection which obviously didn't work either, if so equipped.
