  1. Here's the guy who did Dad's knees....  http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-william-matthews-x2plq
  2. Also... anything you can do to improve the flexibility and particularly strength of the muscles will help with recovery.  After a few therapy sessions, Dad made the comment that he had no idea how weak he'd gotten from not bending his knees much.  And for reference, he'll be 70 in a couple months.  I'm sure age has a big impact on recovery time.    I remember that knee bender doodad.  Funniest thing was watching Mom try to help Dad with his exercises.  They fussed like an old married couple...  :D
  3. Dad is almost at the 1 yr mark from having his 2nd total knee, had the 1st one done the year before that.  A few things I've learned...   Incidence of stroke increases dramatically if both knees are done at the same time.  They don't have a good reason why, but it does.   It hurts.  A lot.  They load you up with the good pain meds during surgery and it takes about 24 hrs for them to fully wear off.  So day 1 isn't too bad.  Day 2, on the other hand...   Dad did not have full anesthesia for either knee, epidural only.  I think that got him out of the hospital at least 24 hrs faster than he otherwise would have.  He was home within 24hrs for the 2nd one.    The swelling takes a long time to go away.  He still has some swelling 10 months later in the 2nd knee.   Flexibility is difficult to improve, especially if you don't have much now.  He was walking without the walker after a couple weeks.  He used a cane for a while after that.  Dad still does the "old man with bad knees waddle".  I'm not sure if it's because he just doesn't have the flexibility, or it hurts, or it's how he walked for the prior 3 years so it's just normal to him.    Dad got a gizmo similar to this from my sister who's also had a couple knee surgeries.  While somewhat annoyingly loud, the not having to mess with ice packs is worth it.  Dad's half deaf so he didn't care about the noise.
  4.       Agreed on the out-of-pocket expenses, per year.  Hope you don't have major problem on Dec 30th.  My sister had to have her appendix removed on Dec 30th.  Some of the bills came before Jan 1 and some after, so the deductible and out-of-pocket max limits both got double-dipped.  3 days either way and it would have cost half as much.    I do give some legitimacy to the benefits of the "negotiated rates".  I don't know why they do it that way, but there are some benefits.  When I had hernia surgery, there was a line item that was basically "incidentals" - $8000.  The negotiated rate for that was something like $400.  So that tells me that had an uninsured person had that procedure, they'd owe the full $8000 while I only had to pay $400.  $7600 is several years worth of premiums.  Something to think about.
  5.     Heh, I'm just the opposite.  Anything without the standard FSB looks strange to me.  The only gun I've ever sold was an AR with a railed gas block.      Caster, a few years ago they finally made the 16" A4 config legal for NRA high power matches.
  6. I've had good luck with the Defiant (store) brand at Home Depot.  They had a couple on a really good sale around the holidays and I regret not getting them just because.      http://www.homedepot.com/b/Tools-Hardware-Safety-Security-Flashlights-Accessories/Defiant/N-5yc1vZc24wZfw
  7. I took my kids to a birthday party, did a little yard work, cleaned the aquarium, and cleaned the house. Cause that's what I really wanted to be doing. Really.
  8. Because it's New Jersey and no one cares about New Jersey.
  9. Why do I never put my phone number in craigslist ads? Oh yeah....
  10. Mine still says 12. If they'd had a big bottle, I'd certainly have gotten it, even without knowing about this.
  11. I was referring to the mention of homosexuality. There's the theory that every thread here, regardless of initital topic, will eventually end up being about sexual preference. This one only took 9 posts. That's pretty fast. You should be proud. :)
  12. 9 posts, sweet!
  13. I just picked up another bottle of Elijah Craig, I'll have to look at it and see what it says.
  14. They're out there, they vote, and they reproduce.

  16. I use clear plastic totes. I like clear so I can see what's in there.  They're in my house, so there's no real need to keep them sealed up against moisture.  If I was really paranoid, I'd put a couple little desiccant packs in there.  If you've got kids, that's something you need to consider as well.    That's unloaded mags.  The loaded mags stay in the safe.
  17. I don't see spending the $25 when a little time with a file would return it to service.  I'd probably file it off flat.
  18. Sounds like it was as expected... a preach to the choir session.  I like the idea, but the people who need to hear that message weren't there.  It would be great to see the community band together and do some real good, so Rogero can take credit for it.
  19. Glad it was fairly benign.  As per Dolomite's advice, I'd clean the truck really well too.
  20. Mine is too full to be cluttered. It's quite the geometry problem fitting 11 (plus mags) in a cabinet made for 8. ;)
  21. Draw this thing out, measure stuff, and get the interior all laid out and thought through before you dig a footer.  That'll take a while, but it'll be worth it.     If you're planning on a lift, welder, big air compressor, etc...  have a stand alone 200 amp, 240V 3 phase service.   Wifi or ethernet   Hot water, toilet, big utility sink, floor drains.   Beam for hoist.   Skylights.  Exhaust fan.  LOTS of interior lights (think paint booth).  Drive-thru doors as big as you can afford (think RV).  Air lines and power lines run all the way around.    Look into the professionally applied commercial grade epoxy floor coatings.  The hardware store stuff isn't durable enough.    Spray foam insulation is much more efficient but pricey.
  22. 28/30.  Missed the Crockett gun and Chinese hand cannons.
  23. So did they think the race fuel was ethanol instead of gasoline?  Perhaps it was home distilled fuel?  Tragic indeed.
  24.     Stand there and watch people die.  Yep, that's what cops do all day, every day.  :shake:     I don't have anything against open carry.  I have issues with morons with feelings of inadequacy who get their rocks off trying be the next youtube hero by filming themselves "standing up to the man".  Their inability to carry on an intelligent conversation and immediately defaulting to butt hurt does nothing but work against what they claim their end game is.  I also have issues with this constant "us vs. them" attitude.  I refuse to accept the notion that the police are the Gestapo.  The majority are just people trying to do a pretty sucky job dealing with society's dregs for a pretty sucky paycheck.  I'll agree that there's certainly a few bad apples with a badge, but treating all of them like crap doesn't make anything better, it makes everything worse.   After that encounter, do you think that cop is more or less likely to hassle someone open carrying?  I bet he laughed his ass off when he walked away.  I'll bet he told all his cop buddies about it and I'll bet they all laughed too.   So while the OC'er may think he won, all he did was stir the pot.
  25. I don't disagree that cops should be held to a fairly high standard. However, I also think that our expectations for them to understand the nuances of a huge variety of laws that we ourselves have a hard time fully grasping is a bit much at times. Last I checked, cops don't get paid quite as much as lawyers, so expecting them to behave like one is a bit much. And you never know what that cop was doing 30 mins ago that might affect his/her attitude. It may have been decidedly more unpleasant than some nitwit trying to bait them into a mistake.
