Not me, but my older boy.... We drove over for a 4-H BB and air rifle competition at the Rutherford County Ag Center Saturday. It was his first competition. He was nervous and it showed in his first round but he settled in reasonably. I think he learned a bit we can apply at Bend of the River next weekend. I learned a couple things as well. Murfreesboro traffic is no joke. Holy smokes! I think I could've walked to lunch faster. We drove back through the country a bit across 96 and 70. Really pretty farm country out there. -
I've never seen cornbread rise that much. I guess both self-rising flour and cornmeal will do that. And "Free State of Jones" is a good movie.

People are messy, complicated, difficult, and panicy in groups. Why do we have all these fancy (and expensive) electronic nannies in vehicles today? ABS, stability control, auto-brake, etc... Because it's easier to program a computer than to train a person.

Yes. Circumstances should not be an excuse for a fundamental lack of moral character, but it has permeated our society. On a much lesser scale, I see it at work. One of the big dogs is not a nice person. He treats most of his employees quite poorly... fear and intimidation are his primary tools. But after a few years, a lot of people have normalized this poor behavior. They know and accept that they're going to get cussed out or threatened. They just shrug it off. It creates undue stress which gets passed on to others and before long that snowball rolling downhill has become an avalanche.

A raised ranch with a basement is ideal. That's what I wanted but I couldn't find one that didn't have drainage/moisture issues from not being built properly. I've not heard of burst pex, but I know several people who've had mold and water damage from leaky fittings. -

I'm not sure what you mean by wrapping the pipes every winter? That's a one and done thing. I did mine 15 years ago. Frozen pipes are really only a concern if you lose power/heat. Opening or closing the vents takes 2 minutes. Frozen pipes are also possible with a slab if they're run in exterior walls. Yes, leaks in a slab require a jack hammer. Leaks in a crawlspace may rot the subfloor, but slab floors have a layer of insulation under the floor too. -

Being but a humble engineer, I don't pretend to understand all this financial stuff. Largely I think it's just a bunch crap some bean counters made up to justify their existence and hide from doing any tangible work. Business leaders who suck at their jobs should be allowed to fail and it should be painful. Innocent people also get hurt along the way, which is unfortunate. But people don't learn anything when they get bailed out. That snarky and cynical opinion aside, I'm always reminded of this scene from Sneakers when things like this happen....

@MacGyver @gregintenn .... I'll try to revisit this when the squash starts coming in. Mom made squash casserole a lot when I was a kid. I love you Mom, but your squash casserole is terrible. Runny, slimy, over cooked... I'll try to remember to give this a shot. Normally I either grill or sautee squash with onions, but I like a good casserole.

Rob... my wife is gluten free, hence no flour. For Mexican, just add some finely chopped peppers and shredded cheese to the above. The sugar in ours doesn't make it sweet like Jiffy mix. I usually give cornbread a good dousing with honey or molasses so a little sugar in the mix doesn't wag the needle. Best cornbread memories I have are of my grandmother's vegetable soup at Christmas. Pretty big family on her side so there would be 25-30 of us. She'd make a huge stock pot of vegetable soup for dinner. She grew up in the depression so her soup was really, really thin. But that didn't matter because there was plenty of cornbread to crumble in your bowl, and another piece with some molasses for dessert. She passed away 8 or 10 years ago, and the big family meals went with her. Good memories.

10" cast iron skillet, oven at 425F. 1.5 cup buttermilk or whole milk 2 eggs, 2 tbsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/4 cup melted butter 2 cups fresh ground corn meal Melt the butter in the skillet on the stove top, which also warms and greases the skillet. Mix everything except the corn meal and butter. Then add the corn meal, then the butter. Pour into the skillet and bake for 30 mins or until its done in the middle. Gluten free. And yes, we have a grinder and make our own cornmeal.

The courts largely consider motorcyclists 2nd class citizens. There are plenty of instances where drivers got minimal penalties where a rider was hurt or killed. I've never understood the precedent, but it exists.

I have done that very thing a couple times. Traffic jam when it's very hot out and I started to overheat. One of those I turned around and went backwards between the cars because that's where the closest crossover was. I'll take a citation over heat stroke every time. I agree that the shoulder is a high likelihood of a puncture, so I'd rather go between the cars. Filtering would be ugly for a while until drivers get used to it and realize it benefits them as well. A certain percentage will never get it.

What Jerk seasoning do you guys like? I don't mind if it's spicy but, not too spicy for the rest of my family.

Predator generators are generally well regarded. I know several people with one who are happy. I also see them commonly on food trucks. -
How many of these come in sizes other than huge? I don't have the biggest hands so most work gloves are big and I have no dexterity with them. I can't pick up a pen to write something without shedding the gloves.

Marinading takes more forethought than i can usually manage, but i like the Allegro brand marinades, very savory. Be aware the bottles do not have any sort of restriction in the lid, so it comes out really fast. My quick and easy thing is just Italian salad dressing. Slice breasts into tenders, brush on some Italian dressing and grill. My family likes that pretty well.

Yep. I generally tip about 20% on the total less tax. The restaurant isn't providing the services the tax pays for, so I don't consider it when I tip. As for not tipping cashier type places.... the cost is passed to the customer either way. I just hope it really does go to the employees. I've heard that about the Sunday lunch crowd from more than enough people to believe it. I've never understood it, but it is what it is. Sad but true. About a year ago my wife was asking why my credit card bills had gone up. We'd started having lunch out with her family every Sunday. $80 4x per month = $320/month. Not sustainable and I'd rather cook anyway. We still eat out more than we should but it's hard with our busy life.
