Best of luck. I know a couple people who've had similar surgery. They both said it really, really sucked but was worth it.

What if one of your kids took one of THESE to school . . . . ?

Because kids running around with toy guns that realistic would get shot these days? -
.50 BMG vs. Peeps . . . . . yes, Peeps . . . . .

I'm a bit surprised at how much the nails deflect the bullet. -
Making a ceramic kiln into a gun parts kiln.

Ok... so you annealed or tempered it a bit at 500 deg. Keep in mind that thermocouples do degrade over time and no two are the same. Yes, 2000F should be plenty hot for most things. Just be very careful and plan accordingly. You will drop a piece of 1500 deg steel at just the wrong moment, be prepared for the consequences. And yes, large differences in section thickness have the potential to cause warpage during quench. You'll need a good infrared pyrometer to measure the post quench temp of the part. Some steels are very sensitive to how far you quench them down and then get them into the annealing oven quickly. 4140 is common enough that you should be able to find phase diagrams and age tempering curves. I have access to the ASM databases through work, so holler if you have questions. -

I asked about the steel because I was confused about how you were heat treating it. If all you did was heat it to 500 deg and let it cool, you didn't really do anything other than make it change color. Your kiln barely gets hot enough to do much to 4140. It takes 1600 deg and then oil quench to harden it. -
I've had a PT145 for years and it's been great. Several friends have bought those PT111's for around $200 and been quite happy.

Add some soak time. Unless you're heating something really small, the load isn't going to heat up nearly as fast as the air in the furnace. At 8 minutes from ambient to 500, I doubt the load got all the way up to 500. You need to let it soak and stabilize for a few minutes. When you go to higher temps, you need to step up the temp. Pause at 500 for 5 minutes, then pause at 750 for 8 minutes, then 1000 for 10 minutes, and so on. Also with higher temps, you may need to put some shielding in there to protect the parts from the radiation coming off the heating elements as localized melting is possible. What version of 4140 did you start with? -
I've got a good friend... he's kinda tall and skinny with a beautiful deep red glow. He's a lot older than I am but is still in fine shape. He's really fun to hang out with and the best part is when he shoots off at the mouth.

I vacuum seal lots of smoked meat and freeze it. It's been fine after about 2 years. We recently got a dehydrator but have only done fruit. I love jerky and would like to try jerky but haven't had an entire day to try it yet. We also recently got a pressure canner but again have only done veggies, pickles, relish, etc. As with @prag, meat is awfully expensive to experiment with and screw it up. I'd really like to try venison but that would require hunting, which I haven't been able to manage either... maybe this fall.

I think my food saver is similar to what @JAB found. Mine is a 550, which appears to go for about $30 on eBay. It still works fine.

We've used Food Saver and ziplock brand with no problems.

My condolences on the loss of your Dad. It's good to have some things to bring back pleasant memories.

Reading up on SCTP (which sounds like a great program), I get the impression that while all the kids on one team may all go to the same school and wear school colors, thats not a requirement to form a team. Therefore I'd argue that it's not a "school event". But that's worth exactly what you paid for it.
-
That's was part of my point... Are the teams directly school sponsored, wearing school colors, etc., or just youth club teams that happen to be comprised of students, who may or may not all happen to attend the same school? To me, there's a distinct difference. Regardless, the law (as usual) is way too vague and needs either rewritten or some case law to clarify the specifics.
-
Thanks. So yes, based on the verbiage in the statute, it sounds like anyone not on a school team in possession of a gun anywhere on the property is eligible to be charged with a felony. Which is pretty stupid, but then this is TN law we're talking about so... I'd say this is a good opportunity for an AG opinion to provide some clarification. If I was in management of the club, that's just what I'd do.

I don't think you answered my question... Was this a school only tournament on private property? Or was it a public shooting event in which school teams were competing?

Fingerprinting/photos in Knoxville

UPS stores do it, I think. And it should be all electronic now. No ink or cards to deal with. -
Was it limited to schools only, or were school teams competing in an event open to non-school groups?

How do you know when it's overscoped?
peejman replied to Sam1's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Over-scoped? You mean when you can't tell which quadrant of the bull the reticle is on? -
A bunch of guys I work with use the 200 lumen version of those and they're not nice to them either. They've held up almost as well as the $120 Streamlights.

Which illustrates that all sorts of things can be vacuum sealed. Handy for keeping thing clean in dirty environments ( bearings, o-rings, gaskets, ...) or storing things that may deteriorate over time.
