Definitely shop around. I understand the desire to "buy local", but mortgages get bought and sold every day. With things like a mortgage, a very small difference at the beginning can have a huge effect on the end. Get the best deal you can, regardless of where it comes from. Sometimes increasing your down payment can improve the loan terms. As mentioned, owning a house is expensive. It's rare that anything significant goes wrong and doesn't cost $1000 to fix.

The lack of rational discussion is the biggest problem. We can't let that go anymore. Shaking your head and walking away because you can't wrap your head around the depth of the crazy can't be an option any longer. We HAVE to talk about it. I can't say I have great ideas on how to reason with the unreasonable, as it can be akin to mud wrestling with a pig, but silence is no longer a valid response. As Jared Reston said, don't just fight the fight, win it.

THIS is what activism looks like. What is our side doing?
peejman replied to TGO David's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Read up on the BATF rule change process. There is literally nothing John Q Public can do about it. https://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/106533-bump-stocks/?tab=comments#comment-1483249 It will when they change the definition. See above. The only thing I see as lawsuit worthy is the loss of personal property value. The government may end up coughing up a couple hundred bucks each as a tax on itself for changing its mind. Education is the key. As mentioned, the other side is consistently yelling a lot louder than we are. In the absence of true leadership, the people will follow whomever steps up to the microphone. -
I'm sure there are standards or guidelines for site slopes when backfilled with gravel. It's not my forte, but I've got a buddy who does structural concrete so he might know. 6ft deep x 40 ft long x 30ft wide is a LOT of gravel. Like 2.4 million pounds (1200 tons) of it. Just off hand, I don't see how that wouldn't require a retaining wall.

There should be an app for that...

Mostly what he said.... velocity doesn't match twist rate, either too fast or too slow. Bullets don't bite the rifling because the grooves are clogged or worn away, or the bullets are too small or bore too large (worn). Some obstruction, typically near the muzzle, that's "tripping" the bullet on the way out.

SCCY is listed as the owner of the parcel, but the county's "go away" signs are still there. I would guess the recent market downturn has slowed the process.

A well regulated militia, being the best security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

You haven't heard anything because they haven't done anything. No sign, no survey markers, nothing.

If you're not responsible/trustworthy/mature enough to drink or own a firearm until you're 21, then perhaps you're not responsible/trustworthy/mature enough to vote or die for your country either.

I would consider your nephew's experience a perfect example of my point. His opinion of eating meat was challenged. It took some time and influence, but he determined that not only did he not agree with the teacher, he didn't have to agree with the teacher, and he's stronger for it. They can agree to disagree. That's an excellent learning experience for later in life.

My experience with the local school my kids go to is similar to @MacGyver. I take my kids to school periodically and talk with the teachers when I'm there. My wife volunteers at the school almost weekly and has become friends with several of the teachers. We don't see any of this liberal indoctrination that so many complain about. I've generally chalked that up to living in hillbilly east TN instead of the "big city", but its good to hear that maybe it's not as wide spread as presented. In my experience, the teachers are working too hard trying to teach the 3 R's with minimal resources to have time to promote an "agenda". There was a very liberal teacher in the adjacent middle school who made some controversial comments a few years ago. He also happened to be a high school classmate of my wife. I don't recall the details at the moment, but they got rid of him pretty quickly. Perhaps pushing "the agenda" gets greater as the kids get older, but I'm not opposed to that in principle. It's good for their beliefs and opinions to get challenged occasionally. It gives good motivation to learn more about a topic and strengthen one's position or change your mind if appropriate. Same as with muscles, if you don't work them hard, they won't get strong. I feel like I have a good enough relationship with my kids that they'll come to me with questions. We can work together to learn the facts and establish a good foundation of knowledge. We already do that to some extent with some of the ridiculous things they hear from other kids at school.

I'm impressed that they were able to track down a suspect so quickly with what appears to be very little information. I'm curious to get more info on the investigation.
-
That's the worst part. A lot of these kids are being used a pawns to further an agenda they don't fully understand. I'm sure many of them will learn a great deal from this experience, but it will take years for them to grasp the extent of the exploitation they're subject to.

Interested, but already have plans for that weekend.

I'm glad mine go to school in hillbillyville east TN.

Penalties for carrying in a prohibited place.
peejman replied to m16ty's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Carrying on school property is a felony. But, the law also clearly states that you cannot be criminally charged for carrying illegally if you used the weapon in justifiable self defense. The key word there is "criminally". There's no protection from the civil suit that would likely occur. -
Interesting. Seems like you'd be sitting ducks out there and easily cut off from supply, but I guess they served their purpose.

Me neither, what's the skinny?

Seems like OWB would be perfect if you're wearing a coat all the time. A nice looking, dark colored leather holster would blend in with a similar color belt pretty seamlessly.

Can you imagine the sound that thing made? Wow.

Nationwide school "walk out" for gun control laws
peejman replied to tercel89's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yep. But "reasonable" will involve compromise from both sides. Neither seems terribly interested in that at the moment. Bitching and whining is so much easier. -
Rule #1: treat every gun as if it was loaded. Sad for the family.
