Another vote for Mike. He turned a barrel for me to take off some weight. You'd never know it did not come from the manufacturer like that.

Anyone on here who uses 45 degree offset sights on their ARs?
AMSting replied to lock n' load's topic in Long Guns
I set up the rifle on a stable platform where I can see a "target" about 50 yards away and bore sight that way. If using offset sights, I angle it so the sights are on top like normal as that is how I would use it. The geometry works out better. If you plan to only use it within 25 yards or so, the angle used to sight in doesn't matter. Otherwise, adjustments are no different than if they were straight on. -
Xdm issue yesterday. Help needed.
AMSting replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Did you fire anything afterwards? Look it over when you do the detail strip, but it could have just been a bad primer. Either way, check it at a range before you take it out for a match or use it as your carry gun. -
I have one in x39 as well. I even used it for almost a year when I started 3-gun. Obviously I would not have done that if it was not reliable. C Products Defense mags are the best, ASC work fine. I have a Liberty bolt, but there are several other options. I had the extractor break once, but they replaced it (eventually) for free. No other issues. I also added the extended Red-X firing pin even though the Liberty is supposed to be cut to use the mil-spec pin. I had a couple fail-to-fires during matches before, but not since I changed it. I have a CMC trigger, so no way to increase hammer spring weight. I also only used Wolf and Tula steel case ammo. I did drill out the gas port, but am not sure I actually needed to. It was something I read on the internet. The only reason I changed from 7.62x39 to .223 for 3-gun was because I could see a difference in follow up shot speed. 7.62x39 actually has recoil! Anyone who says the 7.62x39 AR is not reliable is wrong. Maybe 10 years ago the mags and bolts were problematic, but that is absolutely not the case now. Some people without recent actual experience just repeat stuff they read on the interwebs. As you continue researching, look for the current real world experience and you'll only find good things, just like any other AR caliber.

SLR's alternative ambi-charging handle to the Raptor
AMSting replied to Ted S.'s topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have one on a 7.62x39 AR. Every once in awhile it pops loose and hits my nose on the last shot from the mag. Not enough to bloody it, but the first couple times it was rather surprising. It sort of makes me wonder if it is coming loose every shot, but as long as the bolt moves back toward battery it grabs it and locks it forward. -
I ordered direct from them during the Black Friday sale. I got the upper in a week. I would guess they are swamped now, so they are having growing pains. I wouldn't get myself all worked up based on what they were doing before, but it could be frustrating getting through to them.

Wideners has Yugo surplus again, but it is $300/ 1260 rounds now. It was less than $200.

I agree on the recoil of the XDs .45. I like everything about the pistol except the recoil. I had a pre-recall version, so when I got it back from Springfield I noticed it had about 1 lb more trigger pull weight, and it did not feel as nice as the original. I honestly have not shot it much since getting it back beyond making sure it worked reliably. It is still as reliable as ever, but I have to say I don't like it as much as I did. Maybe if I had only had the post recall version I wouldn't feel this way.

The XD line is at least as good as any Glock, at least as far as I have experience. Mine are extremely accurate and reliable. The only issue I ever had was using SWC bullets, but never an issue with HP or target. I also don't get people saying they have an issue with the grip safety. I have never noticed it. If you are holding the pistol properly, you won't either. I'm curious if the same people complaining about the Springfield grip safety also complain about 1911s.

I can't say the pics show something I would worry about. The strike still covers the center of the primer, even if it isn't "centered". I wouldn't worry about it unless you start having problems.

Anybody here rework an SKS trigger?
AMSting replied to gregintenn's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
You can get reduced power hammer springs from Wolff. Just don't go too low or you will have trouble with military primers. Also, if you are working on the sear, make sure the angle stays positive. Make sure you test it often. -
Go to egwguns.com. The officer's length guide rod comes with the reverse plug and ISMI flat spring. You don't need to fill the notch as the plug uses the notch to align everything. I didn't even need to fit anything. It was a pure drop in.

Now you're talking. I would change out the mag springs on any used gun unless you knew they were pretty much unused. I usually change them out anyway, no matter what. I have also read Para mag springs were weak from the factory. I have had two mags give me problems, and the rest have been fine. They all have Wolff springs now and are working fine. As for reliability, it will be as reliable as the Colt Officer, which was also hit or miss. I have had two P12s and both have been perfect. Mine were also the Canada/ Ft. Lauderdale ones, supposedly the worst for overall quality. Watch your recoil spring as the short barrels are rough on them. I think Wilson Combat says to change them out every 300 rounds! I would look into an EGW full length guide rod and ISMI flat wire spring. Those springs are rated for about 20000 rounds in an Officer.

I don't get it. You have a gun that works flawless, and you're getting rid of it because someone else said their gun didn't? I'd trade you if I wasn't at the other end of the state.

Dirty guns and bad magazines - A 1911 story
AMSting replied to itchytriggerfinger's topic in Handguns
Thanks for posting. I have been having similar issues (not as frequent, but the same type) with a Glock. I tried different magazines with no effect. I'll take a look at the extractor. Do you have a link to the testing you referenced? I'm not clear on where the case needs to be for the shake test.
