Las Vegas shooting settlement - 735+ Million. At fault = MGM
Erik88 replied to Erich's topic in General Chat
You sure about that? "Robert Eglet, a lawyer who has been leading talks on behalf of shooting victims, said in a statement Thursday that MGM's insurance will be paying out between $735 million and $800 million, depending on the number of claimants." https://www.npr.org/2019/10/03/766800480/mgm-resorts-to-pay-up-to-800-million-to-victims-of-las-vegas-shooting -
Las Vegas shooting settlement - 735+ Million. At fault = MGM
Erik88 replied to Erich's topic in General Chat
We have entered that era where "someone has to pay". We can't hold the shooter accountable so the hotel is easy to blame. This seems ridiculous. In order to actually prevent this the hotel would have needed TSA level security 24/7, at every entrance. Even then it's not a guarantee. You will see more corporations come out in support of gun control as a result of this. Not because they care about people, but because they don't want to deal with payouts like this. -
I actually pointed out the fact that dozens of other people made the same mistake in going to the wrong apartment. I think she made a series of mistakes. But she still killed an innocent man and will likely be out on parole in 5. When you consider the fact that people are serving longer sentences for marijuana, she definitely got off easy.
-
Yep. She's still sucking air, he's not. She got off easy.

Maybe this guy should try locking his back door? Why have an alarm if you aren't going to use it? I found the end of this to be very strange. "They are throwing this kids life away". No they aren't. The POS committed 14 burglaries. He threw his life away. I appreciate the fact that he didn't shoot him when he knew he could have but it almost seems like he's making excuses for this guy.
-
I think the defense interviewed dozens of other people that had made the same mistake in that apartment complex. Apparently it was easy to mix up apartments. Something was wrong with his door. It would not lock or even shut all the way. She just made a series of horrible decisions.

Look, you were the one that said blue backing blue only happens in movies. I gave you an example of it happening with this very case. What does that have to do with her being read her miranda rights? What are we even debating right now?

You're speaking about an officer involved on-duty shooting. This wasn't a lawyer she was speaking to. It was another cop who happens to lead the union. There is no scenario where you and I could murder someone, and then get treatment such as this. No way they would tell us "don't speak while the camera is on." There is no way they would turn off the recording. She was given special treatment by other cops, because she was a cop.
-
You don't think law enforcement gives their fellow cops a pass on a lot of things? Of course blue backs blue. This has been documented over and over and over. In this case, she was allowed to meet with the head of the police union after the shooting who subsequently had the camera in the police cruiser turned off so she wouldn't be recorded. You think us peons would ever receive such treatment? Not a chance. That video is evidence that would have been used against us. "In a hearing that took place outside the jury's presence Tuesday, lead prosecutor Jason Hermus said Guyger was told not to say anything while the camera was on. He said turning it off and allowing her to interact with other officers gave her preferential treatment that wouldn't have been given to an ordinary person in police custody." https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2019/09/24/police-treated-amber-guyger-special-on-night-of-shooting-prosecutor-argues/

I don't know anything about Judge Nap but I'm surprised he didn't know this. Clearly they wouldn't allow this trailer to go forward with murder charges if it didn't meet the necessary requirements.
-
I was surprised at the murder charge also. The jury had the chance to find her guilty of manslaughter and opted for Murder instead. Manslaughter made more sense to me.
-
And the jury agreed with you. She was found guilty of murder today. The defense actually tried to claim she could use the castle doctrine defense and the judge allowed it. That doesn't make any sense to me. I think the jury got it right this time. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/10/01/dallas-jury-deliberating-fate-cop-who-mistakenly-killed-neighbor/3828562002/

I miss him. At least he could run the ball well. JG doesn't excel at anything.

I maintain my 1-11 prediction. We are horrible. We need to let Maurer start the rest of the season to gain some experience and just call this season a bust. Guarantano shouldn't take another snap.

While we're on the topic I wanted to share a recent Beto disaster. He went on Reddit yesterday to do an "AMA" which stands for ask me anything. It's pretty common for politicians. Anyways, one of the reddit users asked him how he would confiscate millions of AR'15's. His response is below. Notice, he was downvoted nearly 13,000 times... This is especially remarkable since Reddit is typically pretty left leaning. He got absolutely roasted in the comments.

White House Floats Background Check Ideas
Erik88 replied to Garufa's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
It doesn't matter how we interpret commercial sales. Ultimately, it only matters what the federal government thinks. So while I tend to agree with your example, it's not up to us. That's the scary part of this proposal. -

I don't think you sound paranoid at all Elliot. Your analogy was spot on. David is right that TGO doesn't sell guns but TGO does promote/facilitate it in a way. Just like RK does for gunshows. The proposed law could easily be interpreted to include places like TGO. Furthermore, even if initially allowed, this could always be "tweaked" with the stroke of a pen to ban entities like TGO from allowing sales. We saw just how easily bump stocks went from legal to not. It wasn't even voted on, just decided. -

According to the article this came directly from the White House. Can't wait for the Trump apologists to blame this on anyone but Trump, just like the bump stock ban. -
Disappointed with Knoxville candidates answers
Erik88 replied to billyblazes's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
No good options from that list. Look at this, "City Council Seat B David Hayes: We need to expand what the government typically does. Removing guns from the public is important. Making it as hard as possible to sell guns in Knoxville. " Yikes... -
I read today that we're approaching the point where we have lost more people to 9/11 related illness than we did on 9/11. That is equally heartbreaking.
-
I'd like to go ahead and get this on the record. There is a good chance we go 0-12 this year. I'm thinking best case is 1-11. Player morale has to be at an all time low right now. If they lose Saturday I can't see them winning any game after.

We shop almost exclusively at Aldi. Their new decision won't stop me from shopping there. If I tried to boycott every store that didn't fully support the 2A I'm not sure where that would leave. I save enough money at Aldi that I just don't care.

What about an older Jeep Wrangler? You'll still have a slow, unreliable, convertible but at least you'll be able to take it places the Bug won't go. I've always wanted a Wrangler. I believe they are very easy to work on at least.
