At this point I would rather we just gave small businesses ~$25k instead of bailing out a dozen giant corporations that have spent all their money on stock buybacks the past decade. Maybe that's not practical but these bailouts are nauseating. I understand not allowing airlines to fail but some of the other groups asking for money just aren't essential. I thought this Reddit post summed it up perfectly.

It might be possible but unless they had the exact symptoms I bet it wasn't COVID 19. I've been watching the situation in Italy and most of their patients are on ventalators. But I agree there are thousands of people that have it and don't realize it.

Apparently he wasn't even showing symptoms but got tested "out of an abundance of caution". This is exactly what Pence said not to do yesterday. It's interesting how all these celebrities/athletes/politicians have no issues getting the tests. He's one of the few Senators that gets it right more than he gets it wrong though. I hope he continues to be symptom free. It makes me wonder how many of us have it without realizing it.

This article is misleading. It says you should not go to work unless it's considered essential business but everything I'm reading indicates that he's only closing bars and restaurants. He hasn't said we cannot go to work.

Well, Lee has just banned gathering of more than 10 people. I'm curious to see which jobs are considered essential. I'm supposed to start my new job tomorrow http://onthehill.tnjournal.net/lee-orders-statewide-ban-gatherings-of-more-than-10-and-on-dine-in-restaurants-bars/

That's a damn lie. It was a reasonable question and Trump looked like a weak narcissist as a result. Pence answered it like a leader is supposed to. And I would guess the majority of this forum doesn't trust the governemnt. You realize I'm not the only person to criticize Trump in this thread, including the owner of the site? It seems you just like to argue with me and you don't have the balls to call out anyone else on here. I go out of my way to not engage with you. I wish you'd do the same.

And who do you think is telling the CDC what to say? I have just about zero faith in our government's ability to fight a pandemic but let's not pretend they aren't being told what to say at times. Hell, as recently as March 7th Trump was telling us there was nothing to worry about. And since then he's struggled to send a consistent message, often contradicting himself in the same press conference multiple times. He keeps saying "no one ever envisioned this scenario". Really? Pandemics are not exactly a new problem. I wish they would just have Pence handle these going forward. Even when he's coddling Trump's orange balls he at least sounds intelligent and sends a decent message out. Trump attacking the reporter for asking a reasonable question last week made him terrible. He's got to dig deep and find a way to be a leader, not an asshole.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/21/doj-coronavirus-emergency-powers-140023 Not surprising news. The Justice Department has quietly asked Congress for the ability to ask chief judges to detain people indefinitely without trial during emergencies — part of a push for new powers that comes as the coronavirus spreads through the United States.

A friend of mine said his wife's company is laying off 30 out of their 60 employees today. She's having to deliver the news to all of them.

I hope you're right but I don't see any reason to think the experts on this are misleading us. Italy has been on mandatory quarantine for 4 weeks and they are still seeing 5,000 new cases each day. The CDC also believes anywhere from 160-214 million Americans could be infected.

@Grand Torino and @Snaveba are you wives doing better?

For people still on the fence of about the severity of this, CA expects 56% of their entire state to have the virus within the next 8 weeks. It's not the fatality rate, it's the fact that we do not have the resources to take care of that many sick people. The entire state only has 3,700 ICU beds.

I was thinking earlier, could you imagine the conspiracy theories if Hillary had won. I remember when people were saying Obama was gonna stick us in FEMA re-education camps. I have to imagine it's mostly democrats buying the guns right now while the rest of us just laugh at the insanity.

London, KY.

On a positive note(depending on how you view it), a gas station in KY is selling fuel for .99/gallon.

I have some sympathy but I've also accepted that people young and old just don't know how, or won't save. I had a conversation with a friend of mine last year because he got a big raise and cut his rent in half. I mentioned how he should try to stash some of that away. He looked at me dead serious and said he would rather spend the money now than save it for emergencies. I'm having a hard time having sympathy for those people right now. We also have so many safety nets in place that I feel like people don't think there is any need. We enable this. Now we're talking about sending everyone $1,000. It's insanity. And I'm not talking about the single mom making $30K a year. I'm talking about middle class Americans with good salaries that spend every cent they make. At some point in my lifetime this runaway government spending will come back to bite us in the ass. There is no way we can sustain this.

I would have expected airline stock to rise today since it's clear they are getting a bailout. It's doing the opposite.
-
If my memory is right, it didn't work when they tried it back in 08-09. I think I got a check for $400. Most people just kept it instead of spending it.
-
Same thing as me I guess. Bitch about it and cash the check.
-
No one gonna point out how fast the Republicans have gone from crying about socialism to embracing the same ideas those candidates have suggested? Trump wants to send us all $1,000 checks and wants a nearly $1T stimulus package.... We're looking at $2T deficits soon.
-
I bet they love their 10 day waiting period....I wonder how many are not even aware of that law until they hand over their credit card.
-
A lot of industries are gonna need a bailout. I just don't understand how they don't keep bigger cash reserves. Am I just not being practical? I'm so risk adverse it's hard for me to understand how leveraged these companies are. I'd be a terrible CEO.
-
This woman has a good point. It is both frustrating and concerning to me that corporations with billions of dollars in revenue are already demanding a bailout. Just a month ago we supposedly had one of the strongest economies in many years. Did no one learn from 08?
-
We taking bets on which industries get a bailout first? Airlines? Hotels?

Qustion about Loudon County , Tennessee.
Erik88 replied to David Killinger's topic in New Member Introductions
Hey David. I'm your neighbor in Lenoir City. As long as you have a safe backstop and you're NOT in the City Limits you should be fine. But to be safe, give the Loudon County Sheriff a call.
