Hearings stories from people who worked, paid taxes, and did everything society asks of them, only to have their savings wiped out because of medical bills, really bothers me. It's not right and it's not sustainable.
-
I respectfully disagree. I think the majority of middle class workers could do it if they are disciplined. If you have kids it's definitely getting harder but should still be possible.
-
Well considering I wasn't talking about taxes, and I was talking about health insurance, you ARE wrong. Young people paying into health insurance companies are subsidizing the older, more expensive patients. Just like young people will do for me when I'm older.

The man that was executed was only 23. They were carjacked on their way to church. A Gofundme has been set up for his widow. https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-the-stevens?utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all https://fox17.com/news/local/tbi-i-24-murder-suspect-executed-man-in-front-of-his-wife-in-hostage-situation-coffee-county-tennessee-carjackings

Man you are not that old. It's never too late to start saving for retirement. Every so often there is a thread on reddit asking older people what they wish they had done differently. They number 1 answer is always "I wish I had saved more money". Number 2 is "I wish I had taken better care of my health". Sad how those 2 are directly related.

My wife and I are healthy, and we currently pay close to $6,000/year just to have insurance. That doesn't even touch what we would pay if we actually had to use it. Us young people are essentially subsidizing the older crowd which I understand. If you told me I could pay $5,000 year in additional taxes that would actually cover all my medical expenses, but would eliminate what my employers currently take out of our checks, I would consider that a net win. So far, the math I've seen hasn't added up though. There is no way they can just tax the rich. We would all have to pay for it. And that includes the 45% that don't pay any federal income tax. They would have to chip in. Employers should have never been the ones paying for this. The whole thing is just so messed up and I hate that the 2 parties can't even discuss it rationally.

What's sad is that I'm seeing a lot of people that set aside money and are retiring from their careers, but having to keep working a job like Starbucks, just so they can have health insurance until they are old enough for Medicare. I cannot even imagine how much health insurance is going to cost in 20 years when I'll be hoping to retire. It's already ridiculous.

private purchase of KY private owners gun in TN OK?
Erik88 replied to kmtjj10's topic in General Chat
Wouldn't both parties have to be present for the FFL transfer or no? -
Yep. My takeaways from this(without actually having witnessed it) are: keep vehicle doors locked keep a gun on me or at least in my vehicle, as much as possible. At minimum, I ALWAYS have my Protech. simply drive away. The chances of him shooting you inside a moving vehicle are lower than if he's made it inside. Getting taken hostage is the worst possible scenario. At that point, start thinking about how you are going to kill said person.

My Recent Retail Ammo Experience (August 2020)
Erik88 replied to TGO David's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I can't imagine having nothing better to do with my time, than to sit at Academy 3 days a week, just so I can make a few bucks reselling ammo. That sounds like a miserable retirement. -
That's a fair point. Forensics is certainly getting better every day. Since 2010-5 people. Since 2000-14 people. 35-40 since DNA became a thing. What really angers me is when they are found to be wrongfully convicted the states often refuse to compensate them. And even when it's shown the DA's did something illegal, they are almost never prosecuted. Some of them are still working as DA's! Again, I understand why people want the death penalty to be used. For me personally, I have some serious concerns about our ability to always get it right. Even executing 1 wrong person is too many. If you are interested, give The Innocence Files a watch on Netflix. https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/policy-issues/innocence-database

I agree with you, but we can also thank corrupt DA's and detectives who have lied, falsified evidence, or even framed innocent people. Since 1973, 171 people have been freed from death row after being wrongfully convicted. And I'm not talking about the DA's just making mistakes. We're talking about some truly evil #### taking place, in order to convict some of these people. 171 may not sound like a lot but we've only executed 1,400. "In other words, for every 10 people who have been executed since the death penalty was reinstated in the U.S., one person has been set free." I used to be for the death penalty. It's hard for me to feel good about the system knowing what I know now. I simply don't have faith that we're getting it right.

I just caught this on the local news here in Knoxville. This is the stuff nightmares are made out of. The randomness of it combined with the brutality. COFFEE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — "A gunman executed a hostage in front of his pregnant wife during a weekend crime spree spanning several Tennessee counties, according to friends of the victims. The suspect, accused of killing two people and wounding at least three others was identified by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as Dangelo Dorsey, a St. Louis man, who eventually took his own life." More in the article. Anyone in the area have any additional insight?

I believe he's responding to the title of the thread. I have to say, the level of conspiracy theory here on TGO is reaching monumental proportions. It's becoming hard to take otherwise rational people serious. Alex Jones would be proud. Saying that Biden can only win by massive voter fraud is just not true. Trump lost the popular vote by nearly 3M people in 2016. He likely hasn't gotten more popular. Most presidents don't. He won FL by only 100k, Michigan by 10k and PA by 40k. He's going to need a miracle in all 3 again.
-
I think that if Trump wins people will use it as an excuse to burn down their cities. I highly doubt it will spill over into the suburbs or the country though. If I'm wrong, I'm not sure what I could possibly do to prepare. I have enough guns and ammo unless we're an an all out civil war, which I have already shared my doubts about. If things actually got that bad, I would probably go stay with my friend in Fentress county. One thing I will try to do, is have a heightened sense of awareness.

This thread was the final bit of convincing we needed that now is not the right time to build. We sold our house in April and decided not to buy at the beginning of a global pandemic. We've been renting a little house near downtown Knoxville. I think we will try to find house that needs some work and fix it up. Home prices are absolutely ridiculous right now.

I love that "mask". How do you keep your glasses from fogging up? I've not found a way to keep mine from doing so.
-
That is outstanding!
-
How much does that cost if you don't mind sharing.

I'm guessing there are all sorts of FAA regulations for something like this? Common sense would say that 300 yards is too close to another plane.

Nice Punt....

Ok. He said this was the democrats new hoax. So if you want to get that specific, that's fine. My point was that he repeatedly downplayed COVID for weeks and weeks while giving contradicting statements during that same time. https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/44-times-trump-downplayed-the-coronavirus/2020/03/05/790f5afb-4dda-48bf-abe1-b7d152d5138c_video.html

I get your point but there is a line between being accountable and victim blaming. Some people have hereditary issues through no fault of their own. Other people are lazy slobs that don't take care of themselves. Saying a COVID death shouldn't count if someone was fat is a bit harsh in my opinion. I know that's not exactly how you put it, but it's how it sounds. The truth is, we have no idea how many COVID deaths have been from people that were already near death or severely unhealthy. 190,000 deaths is embarrassing. We're the 11th worst in the world for deaths per million people. There are 3rd world ####holes(as Trump called them) doing better than us. On a policy level I'm not sure what Trump could have done but his overall lack of leadership, and repeatedly calling this a "hoax" is the real failure in my opinion. He has a cult-like following and people take what he says as gospel, even when he's so obviously wrong.
