Open and Concealed Carry- How do you do it?
m16ty replied to Ronald_55's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I've thought about that myself. I've never tried one but I think it would be fairly comfortable and have the firearm readily accessible. I'll probably pick one up and try it. -
That's interesting. Care to expand on that? Are you saying that if you are classified as security, the rules would be different when it comes to deadly force? As I mentioned, I'm sure the sheriff will be at the meeting, if not the keynote speaker. Maybe he has some insight on this. To be honest, outside of some of the most liberal places, I think it would be almost impossible to ever convict anybody for thwarting a church attacker, even if it wasn't "by the book". Look at the latest shooting in TX, the guy went in pursuit of the attacker and chased him down, a big no-no in all "self defense" laws that I know of. Looks like, and rightly so, the powers that be are willing to overlook that little infraction. I know most law enforcement agencies around here are all but encouraging people to take down these would be mass shooters by "whatever means possible". It seems the law may be giving average citizens some leadway when it comes to use of deadly force.

The Gorilla the antis haven't identified (yet)
m16ty replied to A.J. Holst's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I understand what everybody is saying, but I should be able to lay my firearms on display out on the front porch and nobody bother them. I guess I'm just trying to wrap my head around how I could be responsible because some lowlife thief breaks down my door and steals my guns. For what it's worth, most of my guns are stored securely in the safe, but I don't really like the idea of being held to some "secure firearm" standard. -
Personally, I won't sell a gun to somebody I don't know or have somebody I know vouch for without a HCP, especially somebody walking up to me at a gun show. I don't want that to be some sort of law though, that's just my personal stance so a gun used in a crime is less likely to come back on me.

With all that's been going on lately, there has been a lot of talk about church security. I've been approached by one of our elders about our church security. We are to have a special meeting where somebody is supposed to talk to us about security ideas. We've got a couple of officers in our congregation and the county sheriff also attends there (I assume he is the one giving the talk). They have asked me and some others that have had formal firearm training to be in attendance and to discuss our possible roles in security. I guess I'm looking to any pointers I could bring up in the meeting that may be overlooked. My thinking is first and foremost, aside from securing the entrances, you need some sort of outside surveillance to detect a possible threat before they ever make it to the door. You could then alert the police and maybe neutralize the situation before anything bad happened. With some of the well trained members we have, I have no doubt that we could be a decent force to neutralize a would-be attacker, but still, the last thing you want is a gun fight inside the church building. Another thing that worries me is most of these shootings involve an attacker with semi-auto long guns. I'm fairly decent with a pistol but I worry how effective you could be facing a long gun with possible body armor. I'd love to have my AR at my disposal but I don't know if the congregation is ready to go that far. I guess I could keep it as backup in my vehicle, but even if I could get out there to it, surely a bunch of carnage will already be caused by the time I got back. Again, it comes to that you need to stop the intruder before he ever makes it to the front door.

Disarming HCPer during traffic stop without notification
m16ty replied to Volphin's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
A friend of mine was disarmed by a officer one time. The officer asked him if the would exit the vehicle so he could disarm him for the officer's safety. He got out, put his hands on the hood, and the officer reached from behind and removed the pistol. The officer told him what he was doing and why and it was done. While I still don't see the reason why to disarm a non-violent permit holder, at least this disarming was done in a controlled manner. -
Open and Concealed Carry- How do you do it?
m16ty replied to Ronald_55's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I've tried pocket holsters and numerous IWB holsters. I've got a pile like Ronald and none of them work for me. What I've done is gone to OWB under a untucked shirt or jacket. Sure, it prints but nobody, I mean nobody, has ever "read" me. I can even carry this way out with the wife and she doesn't notice. Now I'm not saying a cop or somebody trained in these things wouldn't pick up on it but I've never been called on it. These days lots of people have have big i phones on their belt and a smaller pistol doesn't print any different. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to have a gun that jabs into my side, hip, leg, or butt when I sit with a IWB or pocket holster just to keep from offending somebody with a print of my firearm. As a rule, I'm against all out open carry because I think it just brings unneeded attention to you and your firearm but OWB under a untucked shirt or jacket works for me. I guess I might go though the pain of a IWB if I needed to go deep concealment but the only place I could think of where that would be needed is carrying in a place that is posted or otherwise prohibited. I try to avoid those places or comply by the law and disarm. I'm also left handed, which can sometimes make it hard to find certain holsters. -
IMO, our enemies learned a lot from the Vietnam War. They learned that if you can just hold out long enough and not try to fight toe to toe with the US, you can win a war against us. Politics also prevents us from winning modern wars. We haven't actually won a war outright since WWII. On the NRA, here is my take on them. Back in the '80s and '90s, they were pretty content on letting some gun control slip in, as long as it didn't affect hunters and the like. The '94 AWB, that they more or less let happen, taught them a lot, as it did lots of lawmakers. The NRA realized, after the AWB, that they were dying if they didn't stand for all gun owners. They turned stuff around and wound up pretty much single handily getting GWB elected. Now I know GWB wasn't the best we've had but if Gore had been elected, there is a good possibility that we would still have the AWB and probably lost a lot more. They also played a significant role in getting Trump elected. Now I know a lot here don't really like Trump but you have to at least concede we dodged a bullet with Hillary. Washington is all about picking you battles. I'm not ready to throw the NRA under the bus just yet. There could be deals going on behind the scenes that would produce legislation that may do something with the bump stock but we could come out with a net gain. IMO, that's why the NRA is much more relevant on a national stage than the GOA, they know how to pick their battles and play the Washington game. I'm not saying it's right but that's how it is. Lets face it, there is no way in the world we could ever get some pro gun legislation passed after the Vegas shooting but they could slip some pro-gun amendments into a bump stock bill and get it passed.
-
The only thing I hope with the NRA caving in is that they are going to try to get some other concessions in the "bump stock bill" that may help our rights in other areas. It's not like the NRA just to cave on something like this so fast, surely they have something going on behind the scenes. I'm thinking something like the HPA being amended to the bill. Not that any of this will make me happy but I have to think the NRA may have something up their sleeve where while everybody is paying attention to the bump stock ban, they slip some amendments in to offset and come out of this with a net gain. I could be all wrong but this does seem plausible.

Don't fire a gun within Memphis city limits
m16ty replied to NextExit's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
There are no federal or TN state laws preventing truckers from carrying guns. It's hard for a over-the-road trucker to do it though. He/she has to travel through many states and sometimes Canada, some of which frown on loaded firearms of any kind being in a vehicle. Most larger trucking companies have a policy of no firearms. I wouldn't let this stop me though, just don't tell them. I suppose if you have to use it you would likely get fired, but that would be the least of your worries if you saved your life. I drive a truck some and carry everywhere I go, I only travel to states that recognize the TN permit though. I've been checked in TN, AL, and KY, no problems. -
Do you remove your pistol from the holster each night?
m16ty replied to TnShooter83's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The top round in the mag rim does get chewed up by the ejector over time. I just rotate it out every so often. As I said, I'm not so much worried about my kids, it's the friends they have around. You are right about cycling the action but it's a extra step that has to be done before the gun will fire. I could see a kid, playing with a gun, accidentally hit the safety and pull the trigger. You pretty much have to be deliberate to cycle the action, then hit the safety, and pull the trigger. It's still not 100% safe but what is? I don't really like the fact that I have to cycle the gun if needed in the middle of the night but it's a disadvantage that I think I need to take. Where I am located, it is highly unlikely that a home invasion will occur before I have time to respond. I live right in the middle of 45ac with a 1/4 mile long drive and dogs that will alert if somebody gets within a couple 100yd of the house. The couple of times I have responded, I met the people before they even made it down the drive. Both times turned out uneventful but I was at the ready. -

m16ty replied to TnShooter83's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
That does have some merit. I unhostler and clear my carry gun every night though, because I have small children in the house. Even my "bedside" gun (Remington 870) is placed on top of the dresser without one in the chamber. I'm not so worried about my kids, they get firearm safety drilled into their heads, but they have friends over and you just never know. It's just something you have to weigh, I've opted to keep my firearms that are not in the safe without one in the pipe when they aren't on my person. -
Sign the petition to repeal the NFA
m16ty replied to JonBoy12's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I signed it, don't see it ever happening though. I'd just be tickled to death if they would get rid of the 1986 ban, even though my gun collection value would drop around $40K . I don't see that happening either though. -
They could say just the opposite if you had no training. Bottom line is if you find yourself in grave danger (as Col Jeesep says "is there any other kind?") do what you have to do and let the chips fall where they may. You will more than likely face a civil suit and may be charged with a crime. During court they will throw everything at you and try to present you in a bad light, whatever the circumstances are. Don't worry too much about it, just remember the s**t storm is just starting after the shooting, no amount of training or lack thereof is going to stop that. To the original post, I'm not so sure I want to see the permits go away. I just think it very well could backfire with lots more businesses posting and restrict other public places. Kind of like letting 18 year old vets get a permit. I'm sure the lawmakers had good intentions but the net result is placing restrictions (due to other states not recognizing TN permits) on most permit holders. I'd be willing to bet that law hurt more permit holders than it helped.

On my M16 with 11.5" barrel, I'll sometimes remove the flash hider just for fun and about dusk dark. As the shooter, you can't see anything but flames. With the flash hider attached, you can barely see a spark. It's amazing what a little simple flash hider will do.

I've got a military MEP-003a 10kw diesel generator. I can run the whole house, including the a/c. The only down side is it's as loud as a freight train. It's not a problem out in the country where I am but could be a problem in a neighborhood. I got into a discussion on another site where people were going to great lengths to try to get their generator to get them through a SHTF scenario. My advise was to say your time would be better spent learning how to live without electricity than it would be trying to get a generator setup to get you through a extended outage. Generators are great getting you through relatively short outages caused by weather events and such but it will just suck up resources in a true SHTF ordeal. Lots of people these days think you can't live without electricity, I say that electricity is a relatively new invention and people have lived for thousands of years without it.

HCP Holder Road Rage Murder/Suicide
m16ty replied to Garufa's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I practice this all the time. I'm at a even greater disadvantage because I'm a lefty. It gets somewhat awkward trying to engage with your left hand, out the drivers window, with a perp coming from behind. I used to have a Ford that had a nice pocket inside the door that would hold a pistol nicely and could be retrieved by a left handed shooter pretty darned fast. My new Chevy doesn't have the door pocket so I have to keep it on my side. -
That makes sense. If you get shot by one round, you could be inclined to think that's all there is and proceed. If you get shot with two rounds, it makes you wonder how many more are coming and you would be inclined to stop for fear of round 3, 4, etc.
-
With that being the case, I'm not so sure I agree with the change. I'm sure the change was well intentioned by the lawmakers but they failed to see the repercussions or just didn't care.

I think the gun control crowd may have found the silver bullet to outright ban gun sales and maybe even confiscation and may very well get it passed. It's called the terrorist watch list. As it stands now anybody can be placed on it for any reason and there isn't a thing you can do about it. All it would take would be for them to say that gun owners are a threat to the public and place everybody they can on the list. It may be hard for them to find them all but a good start would be the NRA membership and members on forums such as this. I can see the writing one the wall and see how this ends if the proposed legislation passes. I actually think I'd rather see AWB part 2 than a terror watch list ban. The watch list ban has a much better chance of passing.

I don't know where that rumor started that you can't carry in a commercial vehicle but I've had several truck drivers tell me it's so. I've been stopped several times in several states in a commercial vehicles and the cops all said I was fine with carrying. Now there may be some states that say you can't carry in a CMV but it's not one I've been to. As far as the tour bus goes, I'd just carry concealed and not worry about it but that's just me. I carry all the time at places that while it's not illegal to do so, it's against the wishes of the owners. I just conceal and not all that deep either.

At the church I attend, I bet half the people are armed on any given Sunday. Nobody open carries but I have seen a bunch of prints. Of all the places I regularly go, I consider attending church one of the riskier places I go for mass shootings. There's getting to be all kinds of extremest that hate Christians. I'm surprised there hasn't been more church shootings and bombings.

I've been there several times armed, nobody knew but me though.

Ammunition is the next target of Kalifornia
m16ty replied to Randall53's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Ronnie Barrett told them just that. He said he would no longer sell guns in CA and would refuse service on Barrett arms already owned by departments in CA. I haven't kept up with it to see if he followed through though. -
River and Spires.(Clarksville) Is this legal?
m16ty replied to espacef1fan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I agree. Almost all these demonstrations end up being a net negative in the court of public opinion. Voldemort is a good example. Just keep your gun concealed and walk right past the sign, it's that simple.
