I think we're losing sight of some of the "build from scratch" options. Gas system length doesn't impact sight radius unless you're using an combination gas block/front sight. Gas system length doesn't have to impact rail length at all, even with an A2 sight. When it comes to battering from a carbine gas system, there are 4 standard carbine buffer weights available.   If you're buying an assembled upper, middy gas has some merit, depending on how it's configured. If you're building from scratch, middy does more to simply limit barrel choices than anything else. I don't think the military even issues middy rifles. If they do, it's not to the masses.

  I did that too, in the country. I wasn't a city boy at the time, and it wasn't trendy to shoot as many innocents as you can shoot. But, go ahead and poke the bear if you want. We don't HAVE to keep winning the fight :)

  Anybody that carries a long gun in public needs a big black stick upside their head. Too bad the cops are no longer allowed to provide that public service.
